I've recently retired and am experimenting with a vegetable garden this year! I started last fall with adding kitchen scraps to the hard desert ground in my backyard. I planted all seeds one month ago after adding some garden soil, and so far everything has sprouted and is looking great! Last fall I also stuck some garlic cloves in some potting soil outside, and I'm amazed they grew! Thank you for mentioning the harvesting of garlic on today's video... mine looks just like yours! Your videos are so helpful! Thank you for sharing!
Angela, I’m down in Tucson and our heat is just a few degrees lower than Phoenix. I have about 70 trees and they all are struggling. This year, I really applied the water and they are doing much better. I deep water once a week, but I water my trees in the early morning and again in the early evening. I realize your items are a garden and mine are trees but i don’t have half the fullness (leaves and produce) you have. I must still be doing something wrong.

I’m excited to be succession planting sunflowers this year so I can have a consistent array of sunflowers throughout the year! They’re so rewarding to grow because they get so tall and they’re so beautiful, and birds love to hang out on them

Is there a book or a calendar that lists all of the dates for sowing, planting, harvesting, feeding etc for AZ? I found lots of these things for other climates but I haven’t found one for ours.

If I companion plant summer squash, that would require shade, correct?

Wow my peaches are still green. Question about planting seeds this time of year. Since you're letting the top few inches of soil dry out, does that mean you're manually watering where any seeds may be?
Do you actually keep chickens in your garden? I saw the coop during the tour and was wondering what kind of issues you have or not have with chickens in a space in your garden.
The chicks are still inside under a heat lamp. We added the coop and will add an enclosed run as well. They won't have free range of the garden. I'm still learning but excited for our new adventure.

So I might already be overwatering, too frequent not deeply enough. I have 5 baby transplant citrus trees and a baby olive tree. Two of them had to be transplanted multiple times, almost killed them but they’re hanging on but stressed still and I’m adding B1 one every other day, nitrogen when the color fades. I’m nipping the buds so all the energy goes to the leaves and roots. Right now I have my timer set three times a day every day for 15 minutes. It seems to go dry pretty quickly so it seemed appropriate and everything seems like it’s doing OK, however like you mentioned I might be getting lucky because of the cooler weather. For citrus tree transplants, how often and frequently should I set my timer?

Hello. I'm wondering if you have any insight to using irrigation in the garden with raised beds, trees etc? The house we bought comes with irrigation so I'm hoping that will cut down on the need to water every day this summer? Love your videos, you are such a big help and I LOVE your garden tours!
Irrigation is more difficult to use with raised beds, but a perfect option for trees. Irrigation provides deep, infrequent watering which encourages deep roots. Thanks for watching.

What are the compacted blue/purple flowers?. They are beautiful. I live in west texas, zone 8a. Knock out roses and shrubs are the only plants that grow well here. I want to add some additional color to my garden this year. Thx
Did you build the water grid or purchase it? I’m handicapped so my beds are 36 inches high (so I don’t have to bend down). So I built mine, even drilled thousand holes. I guess I’m a true diy.

Grom my understanfing since I left you the question I have found that jicama needs a long season to grow (upwards of 150 days to 9 mons) which must include at terminal period of shorter than 10/9 hours days which is whrn the bulbs become enlarged. I am going to start a b7nch now and see how they perform come December. They don't tolerate cold from what I read, so will see how that goes. Thanks for replying again and looking forward to your informative videos. Always helpful!
sorry for the newbie question- what do you mean by digging up the garlic to see if its ready? I'm trying to decide to harvest my garlic now or wait a little longer, I dug one up and it looks like garlic :) what exactly am I looking for?
Good question, you are looking for a nice large bulb that has individual cloves and "looks like garlic". When it's not quite ready it is still small and usually not ridged with cloves.
I wouldn’t plant much of anything that gets afternoon sun here in Arizona. Maybe sunflowers, or amaranth. Just my 2 cents. Hope you have a good year gardening!

Regular water, keeping them trained and hopefully harvests soon. You could try planting one and see, it might be a little late.

I know you mentioned shading Armenian Cucumbers. But would you recommend shading regular and pickling cucumbers as well?
Regular cucumbers do need some shade, they often finish up as the temperatures get hot. Once it is too hot they get bitter.

No, the foxgloves will stop blooming and either die or go dormant as temperatures climb.

Btw, I have been meaning to ask, does jicama grow well here in Phoenix? If so what is the best time to start? I know it needs a long season to grow but cannot find much info on whether it is a good crop to invest in for Arizona summer. Thanks!
You can grow it here. Plant after frost in the spring. Not sure how it does here in the summer.

Grom my understanfing since I left you the question I have found that jicama needs a long season to grow (upwards of 150 days to 9 mons) which must include at terminal period of shorter than 10/9 hours days which is whrn the bulbs become enlarged. I am going to start a b7nch now and see how they perform come December. They don't tolerate cold from what I read, so will see how that goes. sorry for the newbie question- what do you mean by digging up the garlic to see if its ready? I'm trying to decide to harvest my garlic now or wait a little longer, I dug one up and it looks like garlic :) what exactly am I looking for?
Good question, you are looking for a nice large bulb that has individual cloves and "looks like garlic". When it's not quite ready it is still small and usually not ridged with cloves.
Do you have any plants in self wicking containers? I am curious how mine will hold up this summer. They have plenty of shade ;)

I wouldn’t plant much of anything that gets afternoon sun here in Arizona. Maybe sunflowers, or amaranth. Just my 2 cents. Hope you have a good year gardening!

Grapes can take full sun, but do best in an area with afternoon shade.
