    I emigrated from Ireland about 9 months ago. I was so excited for it but when my dad was dropping me off at the airport he broke down in tears and that put some amount of fear into me. Absolutely loving being independent now though. I have really learnt a lot in this time. If you're thinking of moving out just be aware that there is so many hidden costs that you dont think about.

    As a Dub and a former renter I simply cant understand why people live here, unless they work in banking, tech or another 100k plus a year industry. Dublin city centre is a total dump, over populated, under serviced and packed full of junkies (both alcohol and opiods). Howth, Sutton and other coastal areas are great to visit but in reality you would need at least 100k a year to buy or rent in a prime location. Chase it in your 20s by all means, but with some of the worlds greatest, and most livable cities just a hop away in mainland Europe id say widen your search and experience a true quality of life.

    I've rented for 4 years and I'd echo the same thoughts as you Thomas. It's worth it for the time saved and freedom it gives you in most situations. I was paying 830 last year which is crazy but like you did I divided it up by day and realised I'd make that money back in time saved.

    I lived in Canada, I used to pay 500$ per month for the rent. (About 350€)
    I lived in England, I used to pay 550$ per month. (About 600€)
    I am living in Australia, I am paying 800$ per month. (About 500€)
    That’s why I will never live in Dublin, too expensive for such a tiny country like Ireland, and the weather is not good.
    I am thinking about staying in Australia now after to have lived in CA, UK.

    Respect for being open about aiming for a 2.2 or higher Tom! A lot of people seem to discard their whole time in college if they don’t get a 2.1 and wouldn’t be happy with anything less.
    By all means, push for that 2.1 or even a 1st if things get real weird but a 2.2 is still a respectable degree🙌🏻 not really relevant to the video but just picked up on it as I also got a 2.2 & always told myself I’ve “failed” if I don’t get a 2.1💭 #2.2Squad🖖🏼

    These are great tips! I moved to Dublin about 6 months ago from NYC so Dublin's prices didn't come as a huge shock to me, but it can be difficult at times. Still, I love living here and I'm so glad I moved. I've been posting weekly videos of my travels around Europe, and my most recent video is actually Dublin-focused!

    The moral of the story is don't move to Dublin, unless you want to spend 1 grand on a box bedroom with an hour commute out of the city centre. A woeful infrastructure, poor wages, crazy cost of general living and the housing crisis makes Dublin one of the most expensive and inequitable cities in Europe currently to live for young people.

    • @ThomasArnoldFilms
      @ThomasArnoldFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah but a lot of opportunity bro! Lots of money to be made, connections to make and businesses to be built. We could be living in a lot worse places in the world

    • @laurencesnashall
      @laurencesnashall 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure where you're getting all this negativity from, as someone who moved to Dublin many years ago and visits other cities for work, the infrastructure in Dublin is Ace, we've a fantastic bus service, luas, rail, cycle lanes. The wages are good and bad. But every city has these. It's the opportunities that you have in this town which make it what it is. What job in particular are you referring too. You have a choice what you do don't you, no one is forcing you to work for a company, go out, be bold, create your own future. Cost of living is high but so is the quality of life. Also has someone who's been in the rental market for a long time I can safely say a 1 grand room would get you in the city centre. Sure if you want your own entire studio apartment it's more but you learn so much about other people's cultures by living with others.
      Also we're in the EU if you want to move you can. No one is stopping you.But don't be negative, be positive.

    • @dylanhealy4359
      @dylanhealy4359 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@laurencesnashall I'm merely stating my own experience as someone from abroad moving to Dublin. You can be as positive as you like, but people need to understand the negative issues facing Ireland's capital and there is serious externalities going on at the moment in terms of an affordable rental market for young millennials. Your government have totally failed to address the housing crisis to this day. The video is fair enough, but it's only one man's opinion and doesn't address the shitstorm housing is for many people moving to Dublin for work.

    I'm currently doing my internship and will return to college in September.
    My place of work is in Wicklow, but I'm living in Dublin. I had a plan to move closer to work to try save time in the day for myself (2.5/3 hours each way was getting a tad too much). But I couldn't find anything in my price range. I just opted to get a car.
    Fair play to you moving out. I just couldn't until I have both feet on the ground and an actual job rather than a student placement.

    As a person who is interested in Ireland and wants to move there as well I have seen Ireland doesn't have much problems but there is a *HUGE PROBLEM* and that is the *HOUSİNG CRİSİS* . Hope Ireland could fix that problem or as an EU citizen who wants to join a large tech company like Amazon or Google would probably just stay as a dream rather than becoming a reality. And that's just me being selfish because I heard that more than 6000 children in Dublin were homeless and that is just unacceptable for an extremely modern EU country like Ireland.
