I did find 2008's version to be more entertaining, but this movie gets more hate than I think it deserves.
A lot work and attention went into this movie. At least they cared and tried to make he best movie they could. Theme seems to be about inheriting the sins of the father, though a Hulk movie probably isn't the best vehicle to explore that.
I absolutely loved the movie. Definitely was very intense as a kid because it was nothing like I’ve seen in a comic book movie as a kid. It was so dark, somber and felt like a psychological horror movie. It truly captured the horror elements of The Incredible Hulk in a modern way. I don’t think people in 2003 were ready for something like this movie, especially coming off of the X-Men and Spider-Man movies. If the movie came out after the dark and gritty craze following The Dark Knight in the early 2010s, then maybe it could’ve been better appreciated.
the problem wasn't the dark and sombre stuff, everyone recognized that for what it was it was the weird uncool CGI fight scenes with mutated poodles and living lightning, if the other fight scenes had been more like the one in the desert it would have done better
@@doltBmB I didn’t mind it. That was one of my favorite scenes as kid, actually. Very brutal and surprisingly gruesome and raw, I later found out not only was it inspired by the wolf fight from Beauty and the Beast, but the hulk-dogs were actually in the comics. 👍

Besides, I know so many dumb action scenes from dceu and mcu, and people made those movies successful. What action scenes do you think are 'dumb' in the movie actually, if you watched it? I thought mcu fanboys liked those desert scenes, since they're the only scenes they watched(on youtube)
You also see a true representation of the hulk. You see his strength and how it increases with his rage, you see his super speed and healing factor. You see him go on a rage but he never kills and you see him and banner have conflict in his mind.
I always liked the design of Ed Norton's Hulk. Guy was ripped as hell and looked like he could tear the planet in half sometimes, and when he screamed at the military during the university scene right after he transformed and jumped out of that overhead hallway, like, holy shit, PURE fucking rage.
to me it just looks like abuse of a skin simulation, makes it look totally fake and CGI. the 2003 hulk isn't perfect but there's more scenes than not where he looks like he actually belongs in the scene.
Too bad he gets cut by explosing helicopters, and uses chains to defeat the guy that violated him the entire fight.. Besides the cgi is terrible, considering it used green screen 80% of the film
Yup. That's the biggest thing I disagree with this guy on. I miss when superhero movies were serious. Spiderman 1 and 2, Superman, Hulk, Batman (both with heath ledger and, my favorite, Jack Nicholson)... I miss when I could walk into a movie theater and it not automatically be a bunch of jokes and silliness. Spiderman should be silly, but people forget that he's also tragic. His girlfriend died, his uncle died, he's constantly poor, his life is miserable, him having these amazing powers ultimately hurts his life rather than helps it. The new ones with the skinny British dude are cool or whatever, but the ones with toby Maguire are still leaps and bounds better because they understand the character.
Dude, that final "heart to heart" between Nick Nolte and Eric Bana was pure brilliance! It did not go on too long at all. That was the best PURE acting in any Hulk media, as we got a good idea of what Bruce's dad thought of him, what he wanted from him, and the emotional impact all of those past instances had on Bruce, culminating in that showdown. Yes, the showdown was not as good as it could have been, but the interaction between Bana and Nolte was absolutely top tier.
Agreed. It's actually getting a lot of praise nowadays, like the entire movie in its entirety, of how they just let both characters in their human form let out their emotions for the audience. A masterclass. By the way Rorschach is the real deal in Watchmen 2009
Too many people seem to want constant action, flashing lights, CGI runny jumpy flippy, nonstop go go go, and silly pointless jibbering. I actually like this version because it does take some time and the action scenes are somewhat more limited.
I never had issues with the length or the pacing. I've never heard a slower-paced movie described as meditative but it's an amazing word. A very different movie but I've only recently been getting into what I would call pure horror. I watched The Exorcist at the cinema last Halloween and was blown away. I loved how much resistance there was to her actually being possessed, I slowed down the pace down. If they made it now if she sneezed the wrong way then the Priest would there faster than an Uber because nobody has the patience any more.
To be fair, David Banner was made into one of Hulk's enemies known as the Absorbing Man, the original Absorbing Man was Carl Creel who had the ability the make his body out of whatever material he absorbs. If he touches and absorbs a brick wall, his body is made of brick. I think they felt making David the Absorbing Man would explain his need to absorb his son's power to save himself. Also, I do think that Bruce's father did anger Bruce as a kid with verbal abuse in the comics, so that's SOMETHING they got right. I do also believe Incredible Hulk, despite TRYING to distance itself from Hulk, IS meant to be a semi-sequel semi-reboot as Hulk ends with Bruce in Brazil away from Betty and Incredible Hulk opens with him in Brazil longing for Betty.
A lot of people miss what went on with the mother. David Banner had become afraid of what Bruce might become, so he decided to "delete" him. He must have told the mother what he was going to do, she tried to stop David, and got accidentally deleted herself. That is when David got arrested and taken away and Bruce just kind of set aside. Now David was going a bit crazy by this time, but he was doing what to him was a rational act. He had an idea of the danger Bruce represented. What gets me is that they knew Bruce had been experimented on and David tried to delete Bruce, so why did they let him go? Realistically they would have kept him in a lab somewhere or at least somewhere with constant monitoring.
Very cool movie, and it’s grown on me. The editing of frames can be distracting, but it’s also uniquely comic book, and delivers a few elegant and awesome payoffs with its clever style. It definitely adds to the film! The ending DOES seem like a play, which is better than the average over the top, explosive endings.
My favorite Hulk flick, primarily because it gives us much of the motivation for his rage. David was a Creel Absorbing Man ripoff. If they wanted to throw him in without a Thor reference, they could have made it work without turning him into Daddy.
I never read comics but when this movie first came out (having known Hulk from the 70's TV show), I eagerly watched this movie and enjoyed it (much more than the one with Ed Norton).
The best attempt to bring the authentic comic book version of the Hulk onto the screen. (And I'm not talking about the comic book-esque split screens.)
One of my favourite marvel movies, even with all the criticism. I appreciate a stand alone character study on the hulk. For an origin film I get invested in the science jargon about nanomads and cell regeneration. I don’t know why, maybe because it’s different from the comics. I love the action scenes, Danny’s score is outstanding and I don’t mind the unique comic panel editing even if it was tonally inconsistent. Eric Bana’s portrayal is also my favourite out of the actors who’ve played the character due to the nuances he brings to role. I also like how the hulk looks in the movie being the most comic accurate in terms of powers and abilities.
You've outlined so much of why I love this movie. Danny Elfman did several scores that were instantly recognisable as he work but he's also done several that you wouldn't believe were him.
You can make many arguments about the quality of this film, but I have always felt the casting in this was not only FAR better than The Incredible Hulk (2008), but was for all accounts perfect for each main character. Its truly sad they didn't use the same actors for The Incredible Hulk, or the marvel universe thereafter.
@@ninjanibba4259 Thats fine, but for me: Bana > Norton (as Banner (looks AND acting)) Connelly > Tyler (as Betty (looks AND acting)) Elliott > Hurt (as Ross (looks AND voice)) Hell, imaging the MCU with Bana as the Hulk in all the movies, or Elliott as Ross.
i don't understand why none of the future depictions of Hulk have him grow in size with his rage level. i think that was literally the only thing this movie got right.
Anyone else remember downloading the bootleg that leaked 1 month before the theatrical release date? It came from either someone doing colour timing or cgi, there were incomplete SFX. it had a watermark or serial number on it, so they knew exactly who leaked it and they got sued lol.
I have really fond memories of this one for two reasons. First, there was a leaked version of the movie with either no or very basic SFX - so Hulk appeared as a simple 3D model. And yeah, I liked it a lot (the final version, lol). To this day, it's still my favorite Hulk movie, Ang Lee did a good job with a great cast. With all the cuts and multiple screens it feels like a comic. But i agree its not perfect.
I think the movie suffered also from coming out a year after Spider-Man (2002). Everyone expected another fun lively comic book movie and were immediately put off by how dour and serious this movie was.
I prefer it over most of the MCU, tbh. Also helps that Eric Bana is nowhere near as insufferable as the other actors who would don the Hulk mantle in later years.

The movie doesn’t tell you what to think. That gives it a million points it didn’t have when it came out. Thus it’s rewatchable.
A really well-put point.
I actually prefer Ang Lee’s Hulk. Especially Danny Elfman’s score.
Even though I'd happily watch either, I like this one better too.
A lot work and attention went into this movie. At least they cared and tried to make he best movie they could. Theme seems to be about inheriting the sins of the father, though a Hulk movie probably isn't the best vehicle to explore that.
You have never read the comics then.
@@misterpinkandyellow74 Ok. Is he forgiven? Can he live?
I have seen a making of, back then. Ang Lee put tremendous effort into this.
The Hulk is literally just Jekyll and Hyde reinvented for the nuclear age. Ang Lee took that and layered Oedipus on top of it. Works great.
@thedirectorschair1054, that's the part that made me question whether he was familiar with the source material or just didn't care.
You mean the GOOD hulk movie.
The OK Hulk movie
The GREAT Hulk movie
I absolutely loved the movie. Definitely was very intense as a kid because it was nothing like I’ve seen in a comic book movie as a kid. It was so dark, somber and felt like a psychological horror movie. It truly captured the horror elements of The Incredible Hulk in a modern way. I don’t think people in 2003 were ready for something like this movie, especially coming off of the X-Men and Spider-Man movies. If the movie came out after the dark and gritty craze following The Dark Knight in the early 2010s, then maybe it could’ve been better appreciated.
the problem wasn't the dark and sombre stuff, everyone recognized that for what it was
it was the weird uncool CGI fight scenes with mutated poodles and living lightning, if the other fight scenes had been more like the one in the desert it would have done better
@@doltBmB Anyone that watched the movie and understood it wouldn't bring up the things you said. The military scenes were just for those obsessed with mindless action
@@LeoJovan asking for good action scenes in a comic book movie isn't unreasonable, having dumb action scenes that aren't cool to watch is what brought this movie down, not the accurate portrayal of hulks' personality. just stating facts
@@doltBmB So if those action scenes are dumb as you claim, then why do those videos have more views than the 'cool' action scenes you're talking about? Unless you want to tell me those who hate the action scenes hate themselves more to a point they click on those youtube videos. Please share your factual insight on that. Besides, I know so many dumb action scenes from dceu and mcu, and people made those movies successful. What action scenes do you think are 'dumb' in the movie actually, if you watched it? I thought mcu fanboys liked those desert scenes, since they're the only scenes they watched(on youtube)
This is the Hulk that i grew up with. Still enjoy this movie to this day. Back when Hulk was actually taken seriously and not a complete joke.
Well....to each his own, But I actually like this movie a lot.
Same
This was an amazing movie. From start to finish
I really like it too.
5:08 IIRC, this Hulk was the most complex CGI character to date, the previous being Gollum.
Ang Lee's Hulk takes itself seriously unlike the Current Marvel Era. Such an Underrated Gem.
This movie was good, and way better than the limp hulk that he is today
@GOODEUSMAXIMUS Agreed. Obscure stuff is better than mainstream stuff.
Now this is the true Hulk. Forget the MCU hulk. He is now the Joker of the MCU.
I actually enjoyed the Eric Bana and Edward Norton Hulk's. I don't like how passive this new Hulk is...
They should have Sam Elliot back as Ross for Captain Falcon as the Red Hulk.
They won't. Cause only Mr.Ford able to kneel down the woke Disney sh1t. Sam Elliott is peak masculinity
Agreed.
Both the 2003 and 2008 movies are amazing.
Hulk (2003) is honestly maybe the ONLY other superhero film that has that slow, meditative vibe like Unbreakable (2000). I wish there were more.
This movie deserved much better than it got.
*EDIT→* Not only do I have this movie on DVD, I bought & played the video game as well.
Did it though? The movie received a resounding meh. That's exactly what it deserved.
@SirBlackReeds >>> As you prefer.
I remember seeing this movie in the theaters as a kid and enjoying it. Might not be the best film ever, but it’s quite entertaining.
This is the superior Hulk movie.
I did enjoy this film 100%
Hulks Dad became Absorbing Man.
I think this was the perfect hulk movie aside from the over the top editing…..this is best cast and depiction of the hulk to date imo
It's a really pivotal moment that many ignore.
I'll take this movie over anytime Mark Ruffalo played the hulk.
A small part of me was hoping Eric Banana’s Hulk would make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine
Eric Banana lol reminds me of Bananaman, his name was actually Eric
@@jimminycrunkett_When Eric ate a Bananer, 'e changed into Bananerman._
My man, that would have been epic!
They would’ve found some way to mock or humiliate him (see Human Torch) so I’m honestly glad they didn’t
There WAS one element of the visuals I DID like and that was the living room scene with the head focused camera as Bruce... 'Got angry'... 😏 😎🇬🇧
Good film, great action scenes, definitely underrated
The Incredible Hulk cartoon from 1996 was the best.
Yes, exactly 👍🏾
The bit were he beats up the tanks is the best vfx in any Marvel movie..
I never read comics but when this movie first came out (having known Hulk from the 70's TV show), I eagerly watched this movie and enjoyed it (much more than the one with Ed Norton).
It has Jennifer Connelly, so it's good enough for me...❤
The best attempt to bring the authentic comic book version of the Hulk onto the screen.
(And I'm not talking about the comic book-esque split screens.)
In the thumbnail, Hulk looks like a green Brock Lesnar.
Imagine that Suplex city against Thanos
I mean, Brock is basically a real life version of Hulk.
Both films had great casting
@@ninjanibba4259 Thats fine, but for me:
Bana > Norton (as Banner (looks AND acting))
Connelly > Tyler (as Betty (looks AND acting))
Elliott > Hurt (as Ross (looks AND voice))
Hell, imaging the MCU with Bana as the Hulk in all the movies, or Elliott as Ross.
@@Lonewolfz24 I don’t wanna, they’d be ruined
i don't understand why none of the future depictions of Hulk have him grow in size with his rage level. i think that was literally the only thing this movie got right.
I often thought that Jennifer Connolly underperformed her talent.
She over-preformed the crap role and bad writing she was given.
@@blshouse Too bad you're alone, and lonely too
What do you mean?
The best part of the movie was watching Hulk destroy San Fran - Shit - Sco. I mean , any destruction is probably an improvement. 😊
Would rather watch this than She Hulk.
Bana as Banner? Bananas
Better than everything that has become of Hulk now.
These earlier Hulk movies reminds me just how pathetic Mark Ruffalo's Hulk is.
I don't care what anybody says the scene where he fought the dogs and the final fight scene were not bad.
I think the movie suffered also from coming out a year after Spider-Man (2002). Everyone expected another fun lively comic book movie and were immediately put off by how dour and serious this movie was.
A coworker of mine at the time did not like how they showed Hulk travelling. He thought it was too much like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Tell him to read just one comic book that has Hulk in it
one of the best looking Hulk's
Stan Lee kept it simple: Gamma bomb > Hulk. Ang Lee had Mutant + Gamma bomb + Nanites + Gamma lab > Hulk.
Incredible Hulk felt like a follow-up to this. Therefore, I kinda see it as an MCU film, even if Marvel won't.
I prefer it over most of the MCU, tbh. Also helps that Eric Bana is nowhere near as insufferable as the other actors who would don the Hulk mantle in later years.
I liked it the first time i watched it. And i can never understand why it can be so under rated
Same. I might understand people who said that the comic book panels don't add anything for them but so many seem to genuinely hate them.
I agree about the slowness in spots, but 2003 is the better Hulk and Banner, Hulk fists down ✊🙂
Ang Lee vs Taika Waitiki
Who misunderstood the assignment more?
The entire mcu. Ang Lee gave you the perfect Hulk but mindless action is what you people craved more
@LeoJovan I disagree, but I do like your passion.
What Hulk story would you like to adapt?
@@leej.a.7810 A good Hulk story is a good Hulk story. If mcu movies can make billions with their shallow storylines, then Hulk with a solid plot will make almost the same
@@LeoJovan Yeah, but does one spring to mind?
This movie was infinitely better than the other Hulk film with Edward Norton. The one that I always forget exists.
I like this movie. I think it's the best hulk movie honestly. Yes, it's a bit long, but I appreciate dwelving seriously in the character background.
It's good but the Edwin Norton is very spot on with the character as in Hulk
Although it is long I never had any issues with it. I'm glad to see so many positive comments defending the movie.
This Hulk is the best movie for me. Been watching this so many times when I was a kid and that scene where Hulk says TAKE IT ALL!!!! Gives me chills every time. :D
If i remember right, David Banners was meant to be similar to The Absorbing Man, with the electric form he took at the end of the film, was meant a reference to Zzzax
The thing I find more interesting is how I feel you can trace the evolutionary path from this movie to Iron Man. There's a lot of similar DNA there.
It certainly has its problems but this is my favorite Hulk movie. It released when I was pretty young so there's always been a small part of my brain that'll nudge me sometimes and go,
"Take it! Take it all!"
I didn't actually mind this movie as I took my nephew to it and he loved it! Along with many kids there as well as adults, one thing is certain, is that these types of films have to be watched on the large screen, with others to fully enjoy it.
I adore this film, admittedly it’s not a good film at all but does have a unique style and some of my favourite over the top acting. This is the film that made me fall in love with movies and watching the film is one of my earliest memories so it holds a special place in my heart
This is the real Hulk. Not that rampaging killer in the MCU. Fucking bullshit
if you like it then it's good
stop this weird self flagellation at the altar of public opinion
@ liking something is subjective, thinking something is good is objective. I can like fast food but objectively it is not good for you
I have better impression of this movie than the MCU since Hulk's transformation is more gradual and when he did it, it's very catharsis to see him rampaging around
