I've been struggling with neck dive for years with no real solution. So much so i stopped playing my SG years ago. Stumbled upon this video and BINGO! I followed the instructions to the absolute T including testing first with painters tape to make sure moving the button to the tip of the horn would actually help with my guitar. I learned awhile back that not all same guitars are...the same...wood density, mass, and tuning machines, all affect balance and they can vary from one SG to the other. I've tried them all but changing the strap button location works the best.

Awesome work Rob! You do such a great job on these tutorial videos. I think back to your guitar setup videos and how I previously didn’t have the skills to do it myself. Now I do it myself and love working on my guitars! Rob Arnold PhD in Guitarology 🤘
My main guitar has always been an Ibanez ASX which is a SG style double cutaway. It has neck dive but also has the peg on the horn already. I use straploks but I even pulled the entire thing out screw and all! It has been repaired and played many shows and today I decided to look into fixing neck dive. Safe to say I am going to buy some fishing weights! LOL! Wish me luck.
Just did this to the old xiphos I just bought. Had to go a step further and add 6 ounces of lead fishing weights to the control cavity. Hot glued them together then wrapped them in electrical tape and finally put a piece of foam around them so they don’t rattle. Works great, did the same thing to an old 8 strong agile I had.
Followed every step on this vid. This helped me fix the neck dive on my old Mk1 Ironbird where the top strap pin was on that same part of the horn as Rob's SG here. However, I moved the pin to the inside of the curve of the horn (at the center of the inside of the horn's curve radius, like how some Jackson Warriors have their strap pins there or slightly off-center of the inside of the horn's curve), NO MORE NECK DIVE 🤟
Im still new to your channel, its only been a month since i discovered this goldmine. You tick all the boxes in terms of reviews and overall content. And your chill as f**k Cheers Rob. Whens chimaira coming to toronto???
Hey cheers to you as well man, and welcome aboard!👊 I know we'd love to eventually make it make to Toronto! So many great memories from there over the years! 🤘
I had the same issue with my LTD Viper 100. However, that one had a bolt-on neck, so then one of the neck bolts was replaced by a slightly longer bolt and then the strap button was simply moved there. It was not 100% perfect but much better than before + you didn't have to drill into the body which is a risky move as it could damage the body for good.
Mate, you should have borrowed my right angle De Walt cordless drill. It would have been easier to get the hole drilled at the correct angle. Good video and thanks for presenting the answer to many player's concerns with neck droop. A good reason to go 'headless' also. Less weight at the neck...
The moment you drilled into the horn I almost had to hold my breath! 😆 My LTD Phoenix has atrocious neck dive, but since there isn’t an upper horn I think I’ll look into a strap with a grippy backing. Don’t think I’m brave enough to drill into it!
@@MajorDook1yup, hate this. Those leather straps with the grippy back are the worst, cotton t shirts don't stand a chance against them, collars getting tugged every which way. Nah, I like a strap that allows the guitar to move on my shoulder without taking my shirt with it.
Weird thing is, on my SG, the strap-button is on one of the corners of the neck-joint-plate (the one you'd think it is), and it was there originally as there are no other holes around the "top" horn or anything. And while that's kind of in-between where it would be on the back of the horn or the tip of the horn, it still dives, so it's still not towards the headstock enough. - Though, I think it also makes a difference that it's more towards the "center" (as in, from side to side), rather than towards to the top-side at the height of the horn. What's more is that apparently the position of the other strap-button matters as well. I've seen it demonstrated once that moving it along the butt-end, probably UP as well, would balance it out somehow. - Again, I suppose that has to do with how far towards the center it is or something. Perhaps the fact that they usually center the one on the butt-end doesn't help matters.
It’s better to move the bridge side button to the back of the guitar just above and behind the bridge. It also moves the center of balance closer to your left shoulder.
Some ibanez guitars upper horn are thin like the rgra 6,I drilled a hole that'll make the dimarzio screw go further in,no gaps to let the screw bend or creep out leading to disaster lol,it sits flush w no worries
My Viper 301 came like this from the factory. On the top tip of the horn. 20 years later and still no neck dive. I've seen other vipers with the strap button on the back of the body on the neck pocket, which is even worse!
Awesome video, thanks Rob! I have a Dean Exile guitar that needs this remedy asap. Btw have you ever had issues with any of your Evertune saddles vibrating against something inside the guitar causing a single string to go flat on open notes or fretted notes?
Hmm with the Evertune issue, that sounds like something I'd need to see/hear myself before I could offer any advice unfortunately. You're sure it's actually the saddle that's doing the vibrating?
I just bought a Flying V style bass with a neck dive issue. Since the strap button is at the bottom of the neck, there is no way to move it up. What I did was use a shoestring (which came with the strap) and tied it to the top of the neck like an acoustic guitar. Neck dive problem fixed.
What if your strap lock is on the horn and you still get neck dive? I have a 7 string Schecter PT Hellraiser Hybrid and i think the neck has a lot of chunk to it
I've heard they make special straps that have some sort of counter-weights in them or something, but that sounds like a gimmick to me. But, you could look into it!
@@RobArnoldWorld whattt, how interesting. I'll do my research and check around but maybe just need a strap that can hold and anchor a position. Appreciate you my man!
Rob, everytime you let go of the guitar with only the tape holding the strap on, my stomach dropped lol. With my luck it would rip the second I let go of it.
You're lucky, my experience with moving a strap button on my Viper was not so smooth, and I've gotten a tiny crack of a finish =( but in the end of the day it's not affect anything, Viper is so damn durable, that has survived during a bunch of gigs after that and still alive =)
now i wish there was a nice hack for playing les paul shapes in the seated position haha. currently i sit with strap but still not as comfortable as most others like super strat shapes (i play in the classical position with guitar on left leg)
My Schecter E-1 does not dive forward, as a neck dive, but leans out from the body because the upper button is on the back side. Has anyoned experienced this, and fixed it?
1. Put tape on edge. 2. Measure width with ruler and mark center for hole. 3. Put tape on top. 4. Rule line for drill angle. 5. Measure depth of screw. 6. Mark depth on drill bit. 7. Slowly drill hole. Do not move drill in and out as this can widen and deform the hole. 8. Hand drill the larger hole to avoid drilling beyond the original hole. Do not move drill in and out. 9. Remove tape.
Love your videos. I've even used some of your techniques in my music. I met you and bought an instructional dvd. You wanted to give it to me for free 🙌 but I insisted I would pay for it.
Any of Gibson's more "radical" designs (SG, V, Explorer) could basically benefit from going headless. I think ESP doing 24-fret versions, makes the point of balance even worse on the guitars.
looks better in showroom=sell better. obviously gibson and others know where to place the strap button but the appeal of the horn looking cleaner makes more sense to them to move more guitars
One more thing left! to fill the hole, and paint :D:D. I wish these guitar companies also did nitro finish :P. I love nitro finish... Would want to see on a lot of guitars... If there was a easy way to do it, and was cheaper...
Does Matt mind the neck dive ? Because if he does, why didn't he design the guitar to come stock with the strap button placed the way you placed it ? This leads to my next question : how was it designing the RA600 ? I mean beyond the fact that you might have been stocked to become a signature artist, did ESP said no to some features you asked for or was it your dream guitar in every way ? Were any compromises made ? Cheers !
No compromises were made, and ESP allowed us to design the guitars exactly as we wanted. Matt probably didn't think about the strap button placement at the time. And with my RA-600, there's probably a thing or two I overlooked during the design process as well. But hey, you live and learn! It's like building your first home, or building your first studio... The second one you build will almost always be better, because of the knowledge and experience you gain from the first build!
@@RobArnoldWorld Sure, I own a custom guitar which suffers the same issue, I overlooked some stuff that mattered more than I thougt+ I actually didn't know enough about guitars at the time to come with my perfect design. This lead into a bridge pickip to close to the bridge which make the guitar too bright for my liking and I end up not playing it at all. Probably the worst 3k I spent in my life. ESP seems like a great company to team up with, a fixed bridge RA-600 would pretty much be what I'd design if I had the same opportunity as you. Thanks for answering !
That strap button placement is the Tommy Iommy mod. I think those Dimarzio straplocks look ugly. Grolsch beer bottle cap rubbers work just as well, are way cheaper and you get the bear for free. Fender copies them and you pay four dollars for four of them without the beer.
All you have to do is use your belt to pin your strap to your hip. Put your guiatar on then bring your belt over the strap then secure your buckle. The guitar won't move.
Hey Man ! I want to see your reaction on "I" from Meshuggah, and "Sol Niger Within" Fredick's Thordendal album! You are in my top 3 of BEST guitar players in universe! I need your opinion!! \m/
or just play the guitar like normal... i have an sg that doesn't rly have neck dive, but when you're playing and holding the neck, there isn't neck dive because your arm is already supporting the neck of the guitar...

if it needs a just a little bit more, you can use tape weights (used to balance tires) in the control cavity.

Hmm with the Evertune issue, that sounds like something I'd need to see/hear myself before I could offer any advice unfortunately. You're sure it's actually the saddle that's doing the vibrating?
Gonna use this video to do this to my vipers, thank you bro!!
Awesome man!
I watch your videos and feel like you'd be the most patient dad with your kids. I'm sure young RA from the road may feel different.
👊
Not related question: do you know the difference in neck shape between LTD and Gibson?
I don't! I'm not really too familiar with Gibson at all.
For those of a nervous disposition and don't want to damage / mark their shiny guitar, add some weights to the strap at the back end of the guitar.
I just bought a Flying V style bass with a neck dive issue. Since the strap button is at the bottom of the neck, there is no way to move it up. What I did was use a shoestring (which came with the strap) and tied it to the top of the neck like an acoustic guitar. Neck dive problem fixed.
Nice! Where there's a will, there's a way! 🎸
What would you suggest doing for a Fender pbass with neckdive? mine has the strap button on the horn so at this point I don't know what to do!!
But where on the horn? On the back, or on the tip where like I moved mine to?
@@RobArnoldWorld yessir, in the same spot as yours (where you moved it)
You're lucky, my experience with moving a strap button on my Viper was not so smooth, and I've gotten a tiny crack of a finish =( but in the end of the day it's not affect anything, Viper is so damn durable, that has survived during a bunch of gigs after that and still alive =)
now i wish there was a nice hack for playing les paul shapes in the seated position haha. currently i sit with strap but still not as comfortable as most others like super strat shapes (i play in the classical position with guitar on left leg)
Rob, you do one on one mixing tips?
Yessir! I have a full audio production playlist! th-cam.com/play/PLlBg61aZ3R9gcG2rHRZtkuwliUfpwIDZv.html
Hole Unnecessarily deep for that tiny screw but I like the fix. Awesome.
I had an old viper 301 with the strap button on the upper horn. Wonder why they went a different route down the road?
Good question!
I love these types of videos!
Glad to hear it Jake! 🛠️
got to love the little Gothic SG of Devilry beauty
especially when is all BLACK with all stealthy DoomMetal intents
🤘
Cool video Rob!
Thanks dude!
My Schecter E-1 does not dive forward, as a neck dive, but leans out from the body because the upper button is on the back side.
Has anyoned experienced this, and fixed it?
funny I came across this... did the same to my LTD SG, Cant STAND guitars with the strap button on the back side.
Try to fix the neck dive on a Warwick Thumb Bass! 😄
Thought about doing this but was to scared to do it . Put weights on the back strap , even's it out just fine.
picturing you dropping that slide whistle into your DAW more than once is making me laugh, ROB is the tech man!
🤘🤣
Sick guitar Rob.
Thanks bro!
What bench is that? I checked the gear link but didn't see it.
Here it is! ultracasellc.com/product/ultracase-tech-box/
Good job man !! 🤘😎
🤘
Why not attach the strap at the headstock?
Good question! I guess I'd say that's something you just don't often see with electric guitars. And especially not in rock/metal guitar.
@davidbaise5137 LOL! Dude, the visual effect from that, would make everybody laugh as mad! It will looks ridicule.
Great video. Thanks for posting this. BC Rich Mockingbird, lookout...here I come!
you can also put your strap behind your belt.
I keep my guitar fairly low, nothing crazy, but with a classical type angle, the neck dive is gone
Love your videos. I've even used some of your techniques in my music. I met you and bought an instructional dvd. You wanted to give it to me for free 🙌 but I insisted I would pay for it.
Hey right on and thanks man! 👊
Any of Gibson's more "radical" designs (SG, V, Explorer) could basically benefit from going headless. I think ESP doing 24-fret versions, makes the point of balance even worse on the guitars.
This is what Iommi does. Me as well
I always found it strange that some guitars are made with the strap button being on the back. Just always seems very unbalanced
looks better in showroom=sell better. obviously gibson and others know where to place the strap button but the appeal of the horn looking cleaner makes more sense to them to move more guitars
I say go for it man! @@pideuhweuh8459
Now show me how to fix it on my Schecter DP12!!! 🙏😆
Man I love my SG's neck dive, the fact that I need to hold it up to play right feels like I'm carrying a weapon but it's a matter of taste I think 😅
Interesting! And yep, to each their own!
Bro, every time you moved your hand out from under the neck when the tape was on i was like 😬 lol
🤘🤣
That strap button placement is the Tommy Iommy mod. I think those Dimarzio straplocks look ugly. Grolsch beer bottle cap rubbers work just as well, are way cheaper and you get the bear for free. Fender copies them and you pay four dollars for four of them without the beer.
Guitar looking nice
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) did that 55 years ago! Lol
Is it strap up, or strap on?
Haha not sure!
All you have to do is use your belt to pin your strap to your hip. Put your guiatar on then bring your belt over the strap then secure your buckle. The guitar won't move.
I solve the problem with a leather strap on my viper 400
And the replacement strap lock strap by Di Marzio only cost $100!!
Hey Man ! I want to see your reaction on "I" from Meshuggah, and "Sol Niger Within" Fredick's Thordendal album! You are in my top 3 of BEST guitar players in universe! I need your opinion!! \m/
"I" is killer!
That's what I need but too chicken to try it.
why complicate stuff? leather or cotton strap. figured that out by myself when i was 11. lol. but if you want to drill your guitar go ahead.
Tony Iommi has been doing it for years.
You don't have a tech.Rob ?
I've had many!
@@RobArnoldWorld I'm totally available if you need one. Fresh passport ready to go.
Rob The Engineer 🤟
🤘👷🏻♂️
Ah yes, the thing that happens to non bass players. The one benefit of playing and big heavy bass or huge 6 strings like explorer's
🤘🏻💀👊🏻
or just play the guitar like normal... i have an sg that doesn't rly have neck dive, but when you're playing and holding the neck, there isn't neck dive because your arm is already supporting the neck of the guitar...
Not gonna lie. I cringed when the drill came out lol
No harm done!🤘😎
