    Connor's monologue before the fight makes me tear up. Beautiful acting by Vincent Kartheiser and, for once, great writing for Connor! This should have been his character the entire season!

      Right!? It still makes me bitter that they waisted all that time with the shock factor yuck of the Connor/Cordelia stuff, when there was an amazing character and redemption arc just right there begging to be explored. I would even have still gladly taken a proper arc for Connor going into s5, because his stuff in the last couple episodes was so good, but it's so easy to see how good s4 could have been with just a few changes. Just ditch the Connor/Cordy grossness, bring in the apocalypse/Jasmine arc in a different way and earlier in the season, and then have the fallout from that be Connor and Angel finding a way to dig through all the pain and trauma he's grappling with together.
      The season being what it was, I think this was a strong enough way to get things resolved for a different direction in s5, and the fact that Angel would make that kind of sacrifice so Connor could get a chance at a better life is absolutely in character and hits hard... but I just can't help but feel cheated thinking about how satisfying it would have been to get to see them actually working through this stuff properly.

    Cool fact: The toast that Connor offers to his new family at the end - "To family" - is the same as that offered by Wesley in Angel's hallucination at the beginning of the season, in "Deep Down."

    Joss Whedon's message behind both the Jasmine story arc, as well as Buffy's season 7 story arc with the First Evil, is actually quite philosophically powerful. There are only three ways to solve the problem of human evil. First, you can end the world, drive humanity into extinction, and bring the demons back from hell and let them overrun this planet, which is what the First Evil wants to do. This is a childish solution. Second, banish all evil from the human heart and create a perfect heaven on Earth, but the price is the total elimination of human free will and human dignity. This is what Jasmine tried to do. This is also a childish solution. Then there is the third way - save human individuals, one soul at a time. This keeps evil in check and preserves human free will. This is what both Buffy and Angel have been doing all along. This is the only mature solution (individual rebellion against evil, not collective revolution), and the only one that will work.
    The problem, of course, is that this method isn't satisfying. Because, even though this will work, there is no end to it. There is no Disney happy ending, no great finale, and no conclusion. The good fight continues from generation to generation. Individual battles are won or lost, but when it comes to the collective war, nobody wins and nobody loses. The key is balance, and the fight is never-ending. Once the forces of evil realize you know that, there is only one plan of attack left that they have against you - corporatize you, and therefore, numb you to humanity and to the real struggle. Or as Angel told Lindsey in season one, episode 21 - "You sold your soul for a fifth floor office and a company car." Once the forces of evil fail to corporatize you, you become unstoppable. Hence, Angel Season five!

    Poor Connor. He felt abandoned by every adult in his life. He was a baby and a few days later was a teenager who grew up in a hell dimension w a man who claimed he loved him but then abuses him and manipulates him then hes groomed by “Cordelia”. The one person who actually loved him unconditionally couldn’t get close to him because he was too scared that he would disappoint him and hurt him too. He is not a perfect character. Sometimes its like dammit Connor wtf you doing now?!?! But poor kid never had a chance. The older I get, the less annoyed by him I get and the more I can’t help but feel empathy for him.
    It is interesting too because what he does in this episode, happens in real life and it show’s what can drive people too it. Its not right, or ok but at least on a supernatural fictional show you can see those things that makes him such a tragic character without hating him for actually putting real life people in danger.
    Great reaction!

    The actor that plays Knox in this episode and Holden in Conversations with Dead People is what Whedon calls one of his Hat Tricks, someone who appeared in Buffy, Angel, and Firefly, all as different characters. There are a couple others too, like the actor who plays both the leader of the hell dimension in the Buffy episode Anne and Doyle’s ex-wife’s new fiancé in the S1 Angel episode. I bet you’ll notice more when you get to Firefly

      He always saw Jasmine in her true form, but he definitely was still under her spell. His personality completely changes after his blood mixes with Cordelia. He went from a happy shiny person, constantly smiling, joking around, singing Barry Manilow, and bowing to Jasmine, to questioning everything she does. Talking back to her and then blatantly disobeying her. All of that started as soon as Cordelia's blood mixed with his.

  • @hardybryan
    @hardybryan ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know that this is Angel's Restless, but there are obvious parallels with how they end both of the season 4's. The 'foreshadowing' here is pretty literal and in your face. You don't need to rewatch this episode after the fact to understand what you watched. They're taking over W&H and we see the things in their lives they're struggling with.
    Personally, I wish fans wouldn't hype season 5 so much. All these things are a matter of taste and considering how much Elie seemed to enjoy season 4, I wouldn't take it for granted he will be in the 'season 5 is the best' camp. I have 2 people close to me who actually watched these shows (my best friend and my sister). They both say season 4 is their favorite season of Angel. I disagree, but I understand their take. It's a more cohesive story than season 5. It plays out the way the writers want instead of getting cancelled mid season and having to rush to the end like season 5. And like Elie kept saying, 'it's banger after banger'. Most of season 4 is spent on the knife's edge of the apocalypse. If that's what draws you into the season, season 5 is good, but not that. I say all of this as someone who calls season 5 my favorite season, but season 4 is my second favorite and I understand people who like it more. Don't go overpromising is my main point. It's impossible to deny season 5 is well done episode to episode, but we've seen reactors be a little underwhelmed compared to all the hype.

  • @horsepuncher95
    @horsepuncher95 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember being a bit stumped when I first watched it as I was a bit younger, wondering why Wolfram & Hart made this deal but yeah on a rewatch was reminded of it by that Holland elevator scene in season 2 - where he explains to Angel that the only way W&H can continue doing their thing is through free will. As long as the capacity for free will exists, the potential for darkness can be exploited! Only way to avoid that is to eliminate free choice like Jasmine was tryna do, but the catch is it robs us of the "spiciness" of the world lol so not ideal from an human perspective. But from a strictly utilitarian standpoint, which W&H is coming from, yeah the Angel crew giving free choice back meant that W&H has a reason to operate again.
    I did feel bad for Connor and his broken, traumatised ass at the end but I'm glad they give him some form of peace here, because how do you even come back from growing up the way that kid did? It made sense why he was a complete stick in the mud at the end, but just not in the entertaining way more of a frustrating and depressing way haha
    And now you see why there's such a tonal shift in how people talk about season 5! Everyones gonna be pumped

Angel gave him something that was otherwise impossible, the complete removal of his truma and a happy family life.

    Yes, Connor's memories were completely altered. He doesn't remember anything about his old life. Not Angel, not Holtz, not Cordelia, not Jasmine, not Quortoth, not anything. As far as he's concerned, he's a normal teenage boy who grew up with a normal family. And he knows nothing about vampires or the supernatural. And just like he remembers nothing, no one remembers his existence either, except Angel. This has parallels with the first season Angel episode "I Will Remember You," when he turned human and spent a perfect day with Buffy, only to turn back time and wipe everyone's memories of that day, including Buffy's, except his own.

    I'm really very so sorry for Connor. He didn’t ask for being kidnapped and raised by Daniel Holtz. God i wish things better if Connor wasn't being kidnapped in the first place. I know everybody and i wish Connor been raised by his biological father Angel and his surrogate mom Cordelia.
    Angel doing ultimate sacrifice by made deal with arch enemy Wolfram And Hart to save his biological son Connor and his third love Cordelia. That's real noble.
    I wish Cordelia still alive in season 5. I dislike Joss Whedon wronged all characters in movies and tv shows. At same time, he made inappropriate relationship between Cordelia and her surrogate son Connor in Angel season 4. Cordelia is the closest thing to Connor he have as mom after he lost his biological mother Darla died sacrifice herself for him when he was born at November 19th, 2001. I want Angel and Cordelia getting married and have twins unborn children in Angel season 5 as everybody want that since long time ago at Angel tv show.

      Honestly, at least watching both in tandem as an adult, I found Angel resonated with me more overall as a show, and I really do think season 5 is amazing :) I love Buffy, don't get me wrong, and I do think Buffy is the one where I can point to specific episodes and go "that is an incredible episode of television", whereas with Angel there's only a couple individual episodes that stand out to me in that particular way. It's just, as a whole experience, Angel is the one I find myself still thinking a lot about even though I finished it over a month ago at this point. I just love the philosophical themes and moral complexity it explores.
      The only thing about Angel s5 that makes it maybe a bit overhyped for me is that it doesn't get really great until about halfway in. The first half isn't BAD, but it's more hit-and-miss one-offs whereas, starting around episode 11, it picks up full steam and is basically amazing the rest of the way through give or take an episode or two. So I think the fact that it ends on such a high note is why people remember it so fondly.
