Frances Quinlan (lead singer) uses they/them, but yes!! The rough vocals are what make Hop Along so special to me; without them, they'd be a good indie rock band, but nothing truly unique or *great.* It's a conscious choice on Quinlan's part, (just look at how focused they are throughout this video) and in my opinion a damn good one. It sounds more honest and heart-wrenching. I do wonder if it hurts their vocal chords, though…
I remember seeing all that crap years ago on this video 😂😂😂 some people just think studio recordings is how they are supposed to sound live. They got some living to do.
OK, I literally JUST found out about this band on Spotify, and I'm awestruck at the vocals, the originality, just wow guys, thank you for putting out non-generic music with a soul!
i'm a year late to this, but i'm pretty sure he's using a zvex fuzz factory. i built a replica one last year, and i recognize that distinctive oscillating feedback sound. the great thing about it is that you can change the pitch of the feedback by moving your guitar's volume control
@@ChristopherRMoore Sounds like a pretty badass fuzz. I think Buck Meek of Big Thief uses the fat fuzz factory. He gets some really gnarly fuzzy feedback, too.
I don’t know if you keep up with this comment but I always come back to this vid and laugh at this comment lmfao, it’s been funny for 4 years, I’m like the friend you didn’t know you had.
What. A. Run. Whole band is just treating this absolute banger like a playground for texture. Like, you ever hear a great song covered so well it makes you question the original version? Imagine if the band did it so well on their own it makes you question listening to their studio stuff.
Seeing this live lends so much fucking pathos to her screech register. You can hear with fidelity the total uniqueness of this tone and the seamlessly and tasteful control she seems to have in switching in and out of it. There is such a considered artistry in her application of it. Add the otherworldly emo plod of the band and you have probably one of the most deliciously original bands out there.
Brings tears to my eyes every time i watch this. Im puzzled about the crowd though. Were they just not aware of/prepared for what they were watching? Id be losing my mind.
I've been to some screamo shows in which the screamer had like a bottle of water and honey on a chair to drink between every other song. I wonder how helpful that really is and hope maybe she can adopt that method in the future. It'd be a shame if she lost this voice in her future work.
according to genius, this song's about a breakup, and on the lines "A stranger in India, I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard, You're seducing Tibetan pop stars and wrecking motor cars" narrator is just making things up to justify why the relationship ended the way it did.
How content are with ones with simple demands? They meet their fiancés, cherry picking out in Canada While cursing the river, a seven fingered man His three sleepless wives, all equally sick of him Honey, I left to see some action What's with all this swamp? Maybe in two years you can forgive me I'll be living kinder, I'll have found my place as a Stranger in India I'm gonna be creepin' on you so hard You're seducin' Tibetan pop stars and Wreckin' motorcars A stranger in India But I'm doing okay so far I'm just waiting on feathers and tar You are the only one, you are Nobody deserves you the way that I do And nobody deserves you the way that I do Nobody deserves you the way that I do And nobody deserves you the way that I do Come home, my stranger in India Because waiting on you is too hard The reason I haven't written back is because I'm doing all that bad shit I was My love is average I obey an average law My love is average I obey an average law
I love how before people thought she blew out her voice now people are starting to realize that's an angels voice.
Yeah! Voice still sounds good to!!

Why do you think their vocals are so different in this version when compared to the album version on Get Disowned?
her voice is goddamn out of this world. i love it
I love how intimate and secluded this comment section is. So rare and epic for TH-cam!!
Yes. Please: more weird. Let the mainstream eat itself.
I remember seeing all that crap years ago on this video 😂😂😂 some people just think studio recordings is how they are supposed to sound live. They got some living to do.
Spotify suggested this band to me. Thank you so fucking much, Spotify.
Saaame
I laughed at the end after all that growling she says in a girly voice "thank you"
Same
Well Dressed was the first song I heard from them. I’ve loved everything from them since
Same for me. Prior things popped up on my daily mix one day.
This might be my favorite thing ever. I'm almost crying with enjoyment the whole time.
Been listening to this song for years now and it never gets old.
Everything a live version should be. I never imagined this song could get better.
i love how that person at 1:23 is having such a great time!
Danilo Guarniero A fine example of someone embracing the 'dance like nobody's watching' principle.
He really likes them. I totally get it. Been there, done that...
I'm sure it's LSD
He left at the end.
God I love her gravelly voice so much. It gives me chills.
OK, I literally JUST found out about this band on Spotify, and I'm awestruck at the vocals, the originality, just wow guys, thank you for putting out non-generic music with a soul!
Man she is dedicated. Very original stuff these guys put out
Most beautiful sounds I've ever heard in my life at 3:31. I wish I could get that feedback out of my rig.
I just commented exactly the same thing... this version gives me the goosebumps
unpotted pickups will get ya there

Yeah man some hot pickups/high gain and face the amp

Frances' raspy voice is the most delicious thing I've ever heard.
Yee its tasty as fuck
Not a fan. But to each his own. Honestly sounds they were on tour for a while and her voice is going out.
@@jasem.4789 That's just her voice
It sounds like her throat is going to fly out of her mouth at any second. I love it so much.
god bless frances, their voice is so amazing it doesn’t feel human. it’s too perfect
absolutely. they're one of my favorite people on this planet and i wouldnt be the same without their music
Hop Along is the normalest looking band ever
I don’t know if you keep up with this comment but I always come back to this vid and laugh at this comment lmfao, it’s been funny for 4 years, I’m like the friend you didn’t know you had.
@@bowhello9647 i also come back to this comment on the regular lol!!
@@bowhello9647 i just found this band and now this comment and ive been telling my friend this exact thing im glad other people think so too
Haha these guys opened for dr dog in San Diego and the drummer went into the crowd and hugged me, it was so cool

Why does this video has so few views? Heartbreaking and gut-wrenching tune
Killer pause at @3:31.. the guitar feedback is insane
Completely awesome. What a voice.
I L🖤VE HER . She Feels Life
This voice has torn through... whatever. Just heard this song, randomly. It's fucking incredible.
YESSSS Hop along are so rad. Francis is my fav singer
Found this band out from mark hoppus podcast. Awesome band!
Brings tears to my eyes every time i watch this. Im puzzled about the crowd though. Were they just not aware of/prepared for what they were watching? Id be losing my mind.
same!!! its tibetan pop stars for crying out loud
This is even better than the original recording holy fuck
I love you Hop Along
Just discovered them yesterday. Epic vocals.
no doubt. best recorded live version of this tune. Frances' voice though.
I’d kill to see this song live
Holy shit this song is so good.
This song has a strangle hold on my heart
I occasionally come back to this video to hear her wonderful singing. I want to be her so bad.
This band needs a goddamn kazoo player. But a rocking band nonetheless.
agreed. their first album, freshman year, had some kazoo here and there except their music was more folk than rock
This is dope
holy shit! amazing
I love you Hop Along
"why is everything so expensive"
Honestly same
I love this version to death
3:32 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
THE CONTROL !!!
They rule. Get used to it.
2:42 - 2:48 👌🏾
Fuck yeah
Strangled cats never sounded this good
drool
Such a dead crowd for such a GREAT song
Damn, she overworks her voice. It's not going to last singing like that. (coming from a fan)
No worse than a screamo singer
There's metal bands that growl way worse. There's a technique to do it without fucking up your voice. Checkout The Art of Screaming
It's called Zen of Screaming actually, and that's how I learned. She should learn this technique lol
I've been to some screamo shows in which the screamer had like a bottle of water and honey on a chair to drink between every other song. I wonder how helpful that really is and hope maybe she can adopt that method in the future. It'd be a shame if she lost this voice in her future work.
What is wrong with these dudes in the crowd? They are in way too much control of their bodies.
:)
Forget about it Jake...it's Seattle. Well technically West Seattle...
Why is it called Tibetan?

Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creepin' on you so hard
You're seducin' Tibetan pop stars and
Wreckin' motor cars
I know it's true, this is wrong love

I'll be living kinder, I'll have found my place as a
Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creepin' on you so hard
You're seducin' Tibetan pop stars and

I'm just waiting on feathers and tar
You are the only one, you are
Nobody deserves you the way that I do
And nobody deserves you the way that I do

And nobody deserves you the way that I do
Come home, my stranger in India
Because waiting on you is too hard
The reason I haven't written back is because
I'm doing all that bad shit I was

This sounds great. Extra grimy.
Oh wow, kind of wish I didn't watch this video of them live.
Why?
your loss
she really needs to smooth these songs out. I've literally never seen her do the same song the same way she did it the first time.
Chad Campbell what dumb comment
that’s the whole point. it’s been five years so hopefully you’ve learned something about music since you made this comment
sounds like she smokes rather a lot
+George Neal Listen to her thank the audience at the end of the video. That's not a smokers voice
TERRIBLE
