    Preventative maintence is key in any motor. It will save time and money.

    That is one of the best quality lathes that was ever made. The helical cut and hardened gears are of such high quality. Monarch really spared no expense making these machines. Even the tapered roller bearings at this point in time were a pretty big deal. This was before the idea of engineered obsolescence. If you look at what they sold for back in the day and adjust for inflation it is staggering how expensive they were. But they were REAL machines, just about the best available. On par with a Hendey or Revette. I have two Hendey lathes of about the same vintage and they are just workhorses. Daily drivers so to speak. My only issue is RPM they will only do about 500 max. Got to admit I am a little jealous. You really scored a sweet machine there.

    That is one nice machine, good to see it's being properly cared for now. Heard on the last video about the crud in the sump that needed removal.

    Beautiful machine, Stan! I'm a big fan of magnets on drain plugs. You can see metal when something starts to fail and can remove metal that is hiding in there. I wouldn't put one near a rotating gear since a pile of debris tends to form a tit that may foul the gear.

    I have a 1936 Monarch AA- 14" X 30" lathe I bought about 10yrs ago. I haven't figured out how to wire it up. I think it was 440 3ph.
    If I ever get it wired up I would be ecstatic if it ran half as smoothly as yours. Great find. Where did you get yours?

    • @paulcopeland9035
      @paulcopeland9035 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always use WD-40 Original. It is mostly mineral spirits(>50%) and mineral oils (>25%). The rest is driers, fragrance, and propellants. Mineral spirits is actually one of the Stoddard Solvents. The old guys here will remember the commercial name - Varsol (The beginning of WD-40!). This stuff is expensive "spirits" but it is available everywhere. The folks at WD have done a remarkable job marketing!

    What is the correct amount of preload or end play on the spindle ?

    • @ShadonHKW
      @ShadonHKW  ปีที่แล้ว

      .0002-.0004 preload on used bearings (no backlash) .0004-.0006 preload on new bearings, this is only the case for oil fed taper roller bearings, grease packed bearings need backlash and lubrication clearence.
