  • Hi TH-cam, today it's all about working a smaller dawless techno setup.
    After you've started out there comes a time where you have thought out your plan and where you want to take it. If you've overcome the gas problem, chances are you're looking at a small, yet adequate setup that can last you a while.
    Today I'm going in with the Minilogue XD and an Octatrack. No real rocket science here, just getting into the vibe, scratching the surface! Enjoy watching!

    Videos like this help me with my GAS. The Octatrack has been popping up as the center of a lot of YT setups lately and pages like yours get really creative with them! I have the MC-707 and I'm realizing they're not too different in capability aside from some obvious strengths in each device, so I'm seeing how I can achieve similar results efficiently with what the 707 offers. Once I get a midi keyboard for it, I think I'll really be able to unlock its synth engine. Hopefully I'll have videos to share soon!

      @@AnalogKitchen I actually got an NTS-1 afterwards. Smaller, audio input and it adds some quirky, random awkwardness to my rig 😀Anyhow, Korg really is doing lots of things right imho. Affordable and very interesting, unique products. I mean, look at their small keyboard range: modwave, opsix, minilogueXD and the wavestate are each incredible in their own regard.

      I just bought a Hydrasynth but a Minilogue/XD has been on my list for a few years. I played one in a guitar center and loved the sound, immediacy, and directness of the machine. Now that I have moved some things around and made a new space open up, I want to add one to my setup.

    I love the comparisons between DJing and producing; what got me into dawless was wanting to play with knobs and faders like a DJ, but using my own music and having greater control over the song like a producer.
    I'm on a minimal 2-box setup with the Roland TR-6S and MC-101 (for a total of 10 tracks), great choices for anyone on a budget. Being able to load in samples from other drum machines or synths keeps the GAS away.

    • @AnalogKitchen
      @AnalogKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice one! Thanks for your insights! That is a cool setup and flexible I think? So, how do you set up, build up and transition?

    • @MattyBoy714
      @MattyBoy714 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@AnalogKitchen I think flexible in some ways but limited in others, building a long set is complicated but doable. I use drum loops as the foundation, adding or subtracting layers to build or break, and changing patterns for tension. I'll add a bassline and melodic hooks and play with effects on those for a song. For transitions I carry a few of the drums/percs of the previous song and add the drums of the new song in, then go through a series of patterns to make a kind of beat bridge or beat breakdown into the next song. I'm learning a lot from how you structure your set and play it out, thank you so much! 🙏

    I'm trialing out the smallest possible setup. The Dirtywave M8 tracker, it's a great little device that's really well thought out and very capable. It took probably 2 days to get to know it, then another 2 to get proficient with the basic commands and navigation. It's always in my bag so whenever I'm bored on a train or waiting around, instead of scrolling through social media I can make music.
    I've never used samples before so having to change the way I interact with it to mostly arranging patterns into songs, it's way more productive than just tweaking knobs endlessly on a Eurorack or analog synth. I have it paired with 2 Xone K2's, but looking to buy some tiny intech pocket sized midi controllers when they come back in stock for a complete pocket studio.
    I think I finally understand why producers say they create music in 2 separate sessions, 1 to come up with sounds on synths, and another to arrange them into a song with the imposed limit's of only using what they created in the first session.

    Octatrack + one synth is a perfect dawless setup imo! You genuinely don’t need anything else. Anything you can’t do on the octa you can synthesize and sample in, and building up loops and resampling is a breeze if you need more tracks. Lately the opsix is my octa’s partner, but any synth works, especially a multitimbral one! The blofeld pairs especially well….

    Thanks!! I really enjoyed this freestyle tutorial on the Octatrack. I opted for the Digitakt a couple of years ago, and it's interesting what you said in the beginning about spending a little more and - In my case - get the machine that will really help you jamming with multiple instruments. The lack of looping / realtime recording options on the Digitakt is what holding me back in (re)creating more music on the fly (but I have a lot of fun jammin' nevertheless). I thought I just needed a looper, but an Octatrack can be both a looper and - the way I use it - a Digitakt.
    It seems this minimalistic workflow approach fits my style as well, and while I am not really into techno, if I listen to your style of playing, tweaking and improvising it's not that far from my jamming style. I've subscribed to your channel and hope to learn much more! You said it: what's not to like...

    Great video! I’m considering a TR-8S + Minilogue XD setup. I’d like to be able to sidechain the synth channel to the kick drum or have amplitude modulation to simulate that. I’m not certain what the best approach would be, and I’m curious if others would have any feedback.

      I don't have a TR-8s, but from searching online it looks like you can connect a synth to the external input and sidechain compress it inside the TR-8s. Pretty cool if true, have not tried myself though.
      Simulated sidechain never sounds good to me, plus you have to program it in, tedious. You want the real thing.

      I started with an E2S as well. Bought it full price in 2016 😩 It's a pretty good machine and honestly it absolutely does a few things Elektron can't or won't. Paraphonic sample playback is pretty swank. The E2 is a bass monster too. The Triangle Osc is just dumb powerful.

    • @petert7807
      @petert7807 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean paraphonic sample playback? Also do you still have it? The Hacktribe OS adds soooo much good stuff including more groove templates and a lag ifx allowing for some far more interesting timing of sequences.

    • @koalemos1679

      @@petert7807 I mean that one channel on the E2S can play up to four notes, including sampled notes, but those notes share envelopes and the filter. None of the Elektron gear can do that as far as I know. You can sort of play chords with a few of the Elektron gear but none of them can play multiple sampled notes on one channel as far as I know.
      I still have my E2S but I haven't hacked it. I really like the basic synth oscillators that come with it and I have patterns made with the stock samples that I really like. I don't want to lose those things but the hack looks cool. I really want all the extra filters badly.

    For really small setup: roland tr6s + mc-101 + optional novation launchkey mini mk3. Or replace mc-101 with jx-08, that will give you 2 synths in one box, midi keyboard will add more convenience, knobs, pads, keys, 3.5 MIDI. OR you can replace hardware synth with ipad and AUM+AUv3 plugins. Cheaper setup: volca drum, volca sample ver1 with Pajen firmware + behringer crave(s). If you need merciless analog kick and touch fx control - add volca kick. For sequencing crave on the fly - SQ1, it will sync crave and volcas. Another portable solution - novation circuit tracks + circuit rhythm combo. Old school less portable setup: MPC1000 + Roland MC-505. Affordable, but not portable, requires a lot more skills and dedication.
    One device setup: Roland MC-707.

    • @electronoirofficial
      @electronoirofficial ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnalogKitchen Yes, it is not easy! But that's the beauty of Octatrack. In my opinion, the easiest way to insert chords is to do it live, using the midi out of the keyboard synths, and writing the chord all together in the desired step. It also takes into account the velocity and gate length. And you can do it live. Other machines are more comfortable for sure. 😀

  • @koalemos1679
    @koalemos1679 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You can play in and record polyphonic parts into the Octatrack instead of manually doing it with the knobs. You can also hold a midi trig and play a chord on your controller and it will record those notes. Live recording is still very janky though. Getting the timing right is hard. I can't figure out how to do legato on some synths because the OT can't really overlap trigs in a way that produces legato. It's so great at everything else though so oh well.

      Finding a frequency range for your synth will help, instead of running it full range.
      A compressor on the master (like FMR RNC) can really help, too.

    • @willp3754
      @willp3754 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally you would sidechain compress the bass synth with an external compressor using the low frequencies of the percussion. I create the sidechain signal from the octatrack either with a kick track, or an extra track of all drums with internal eq to low frequency only, and a cue out. Syntakt doesn't have multiple outputs so your best bet to make the sidechain signal is a mixer. Seconding the FMR suggestion, the RNLA is good too.
