    The thing I really love about the Sci-Fi Channel was their willingness to show movies in widescreen before DVD made them available to everyone. I used to have to chase down widescreen VHS copies of movies to see them properly, and the Sci-Fi Channel, god bless them, would frequently show letterboxed movies I couldn't get ahold of.

    Once upon a time, there was actual science fiction on the Sci-Fi Channel, A&E really did have arts & entertainment, There were travel shows on the Travel Channel, etc.

      And MTV actually played music videos and AMC showed classic American movies.

    Oh man, I remember the "screen saver" they showed on the satellite channel and when they eventually added the countdown shortly before the launch. It was so chill and awesome to watch and got you excited for what they might show when they actually launched. So cool.

    Yesterday and today I've been watching Sci-Fi Channel programming blocks from the 90s and then you just released this video. Beautiful timing.

    Another good show on that channel was called,"mysteries from beyond the other Dominion". Hosted by Dr Franklin ruehl who I had the pleasure of working with in the movie business. We kept in touch until his death in 2015.

      But in the video, he pronounced "dominion" as "domain." Two different words.

      Heck, I miss when they'd show cheesy Asylum movies on Saturday nights or do week long binge showings of various series. I have hardly ever watched for years now (aside from Resident Alien).

    Early 90s cable tv was a weird but in many ways, wonderful place. Sci-Fi, The Comedy Channel (Comedy Central), and Mtv had some truly innovative shows, along with a healthy dose of quality filler in the form of legacy shows/films or music videos in Mtv's case.
    Great upload, keep up the quality work my friend!

    • @grannyweatherwax8005
      @grannyweatherwax8005 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed! One of my favorite genres to this day is what I call 90s basic cable action shows. Back when channels would make any random show into a series just to fill up space. So much great stuff! And it didn't usually get canceled after 10 episodes like now, well, they cancelled Vanishing Son and Cleopatra 2525 quickly. And Bristo County. And Jack of all Trades. Ok nevermind! 😂

    What, I enjoyed was one of there first space ship science fiction TV series "Mission Genesis". Each week, I loved watching a new episode and the adventures of the crew. Also, does anybody know where, I can pick-up a full DVD set of the "Mission Genesis" series? (smile ... smile).

    ah Saturday anime, the anti-gravity room, sci fi buzz, tons of weird movies and last but not least MST3K, the sci-fi channel in the 90's was tops

      Watching this video I was thinking my family's cable package must not have had Sci Fi right away, because I was a big scifi fan but none of this looks familiar. What we did have was the Comedy Channel when most everyone else had Ha! (much lamer IMO) But I did watch MST3K early on, so I was wondering what was up when I saw your post. At least according to Wikipedia, MST3K was originally on the Comedy Channel and didn't go to Sci Fi until 1996. I never would have remembered that. It seems like it was always on SciFi!

    I wished that the cable provider in the town I lived in (1992-95) carried Sci-Fi Channel but they didn't and I had to watch it at other people's homes. It was mostly either reruns or "weird" original stuff like FTL but I liked the novelty of it.
    Once I got it on my own cable in the mid 90's I mostly watched Saturday Anime and later on MST3K, best period of any TV show and video games.

    I remember the launch. I taped hours of the countdown visuals, that 'beyond the mind's eye' adjacent stuff.
    I would've guessed it was '94, '92 feels too early.

    The 1992 Sci-fi Channel Sunday nights were great with Dr Reuhl, Inside Space and Sci-fi Buzz. It was not the USA-network light spin off. More classic SF tv and movies, less professional wrestling.

    Great video! I wonder if you could help me. I am desperately trying to find a movie I watched on the Sci-Fi channel that first year. I was only about 8 years old so I only have a couple images to go on. Is there a list you or someone has of all the movies that would have aired that first year?

    Sci-Fi fans are dedicated and passionate, as long as the show gives them exactly what they want, 100% of the time. Otherwise they turn into review-bombing maniacs.

      You’re mixing an entire genre and a show. If fans of the drama genre don’t like one show, do you say the same? How about romance or action.
      Also, a show can in fact be bad.
      It’s also entirely plausible for something to change over time and for someone to not like the changes. Like when your spouse becomes an alcoholic, you don’t have to stick around for it.

    • @theoldar
      @theoldar หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@c1ph3rpunk OK. Let me ask you, how do you like the Disney Star Wars shows? I bet I can guess! Oh, and if my wife of 40 years became an alcoholic I wouldn't hate bomb her and leave her, I would do all I could to save and protect her. That comment of yours says a lot about you.
