Just got the 30 L version for 199 USD on the Tortuga site. Love everything about it except for the card slots. Definitely the most comfortable travel bag, the weight is all on the harness system which I’d prefer over a lighter pack with sucky straps/back panels. The heavier the load the more you’ll thank Tortuga for beefing it up.
Just bought the pack for $199 as well. Arriving this week. No returns possible, so I hope I like it! Had their supposedly 24L Laptop Pack a year ago, and it seemed REALLY small for 24L. But this 30L actually looks big. Curious to see how it feels and packs out. Many shoulder straps are super uncomfortable on me, so we'll see how this one is. Fingers crossed.

Plus, no fees or taxes of course. I'll still list on District, but it hasn't worked out for me as a seller yet. Fingers crossed.
I like bags that switch between upright backpack and suit case brief case carry. It helps when moving between modes of transport. If the pockets is not fastened down the contents will slid out and end up at the bottom of the containing pocket. It is much easier to have a pouch with the appropriate compartments to strap down cables, mouse, chargers, etc and just grab that when you need something. The card slots, found in other bags as well, seem a waste of material. Might be a place for credit card size tools (Swiss Card [not for carry-on], Wallet Ninja Multitool Card, pocket tripod for smartphone, etc) but they will slide out unless the backpack is always held upright. That front pocket is idea for a thin rain jacket or a jumper when the evenings are much colder than the days. Also a place to store the over large waist belt. The mesh internal cover does not work well if you are trying to access things inside from an upright position, when on a train or seated on the plane. The suit case style is great for packing, but not so good for quick access. Having straps that can tuck away completely is a must for travel. X-pac should be for a lighter bag. This is heavy. 2kg when internal flights have a carry on limit of 5 to 7 kg. With 3kg of camera gear and tablet/laptop you have to use two bag travel as excess is going cargo.
I have the older 45L Tortuga Setout and it is a beast! Traveled through Europe for 2.5 weeks with coats, jeans, etc., and although it was heavy at times, it was comfortable AF. I was hunting for a giant travel bag and somehow got it “used” for $40 (NWT!). Best deal ever. I’d get this newer version but I don’t think I’ll ever need it. I’d pay a couple hundred for it though now that I know how high quality it is. Tortuga is highly recommended if you want a bang for your buck. Some things are worth the $$.
Hey Aaron, not sure if this is the place to mention it or not, but after going back and forth with Tortuga and Challenge Sailcloth, Tortuga finally revealed that, yes, their SHELL200 fabric is indeed (simply) EcoPak. More specifically, EPX200. I've heard that companies "rebrand" such cloths all the time, but Challenge said they might approach Tortuga about the issue. Hopefully I didn't cause any problems for Tortuga, but this info definitely gives folks a much better sense of exactly what they're getting, fabric-wise, when they' buy a Tortuga Pro, though not a Tortuga Lite. It's obviously a great fabric in all sorts of ways, but I bet a few folks will wish it were EPX400. That fabric, though, weighs quite a big more, so Tortuga will likely continue to try to minimize weight on a pack that's already quite . . . substantial. Interesting story. Not sure why Tortuga didn't say it was EPX200 in the first place.
I'm new to the one travel pack world and like many have fallen deep down the rabbit hole. You're reviews are without a doubt the most honest and informative! Also, pretty damn entertaining! I tried to order the PeakDesign 45L because it could change volume, but they it got lost due to "logistical issues". Now leaning heavily towards this one or the Matador 45L, I hope you get the opportunity to review that one. Keep up the great work and thank you!
I am 5'1" tall and have a Tortuga Outbreaker 35. In most ways, I would prefer the new 40 litre replacement. I think the 3 pocket mesh lid is better for me than one huge lid pocket. As others have said, I ignore the card slots. You do great design and construction work.

Thanks for the support dude! The older version (aka the Outbreaker) was slightly better in a few ways (laptop compartment mainly). But having said that, due to the comfort and durability, this is still my new go-to longer terms travel pack
17:27 - As a form-over-function guy, looking Fresh as F is the most important factor for me. Maybe if you ever design a backpack that's 40L +, you could make your version be bale to hide the fanny-pack bags on the waist strap. Honestly, I thought SYMPL design backpack was a good recommendation for an alternative, but for me personally, I'd go with the Nomatic Navigator. It's fresh, has stowaway waist straps in case you are not carrying a heavy load, still had a decently comfortable setup (although I think Tortuga here beats it by a small margin due to the adjustable height), and is way more sleek looking. Expandability for me is also one of the most important key features. Great review as always though.
Almost perfect, a luggage pass through would be nice, particularly on the 30L version. Sometimes you need a carry on to work with check in rolling luggage once you arrive.
Have been reviewing travel backpacks for purchase and this Tortuga 40L is a serious candidate for me (I want something that can last me years and usually that means costlier materials and craftsmanship... them's the trades). Now, Tortuga has now a Lite version of this backpack that costs $100 less, uses ballistic nylon as fabric, and lacks some of the Pro's extras like that organizer and the dorky-yet-so-useful hip belt pockets. Worth a review or an addendum to this one I think.

Would be really interesting to see if there could be some space savings and not just better organization. Testing out the strength of the zipper, which I think could be the weak link for compression cubes would be good to see too, since I know you like to torture test stuff :D Considering your most popular videos often are rankings of various products, this video has the potential to be extremely popular outside of your subscription base.
This bag is a close second for me, I'm still loving my Cotopaxi Allpa 42L. I wish they had the old laptop compartment instead of the 1/2 moon zip. I think it is a great bag!
Hey Aaron! I know this is way late haha. I actually got this bag at the beginning of the year for a work trip. I got the 30L becusse I'm not traveling for more 3-5 days. I really like this bag a lot! Sometimes I wish I got the 40L for a bit more room, but for my needs the 30 is great. Its super comfortable and durable like you said!
Only problem with the monochrome cream interior is lack of contrast with Apple’s monochrome white everything. In that way, kinda favor AER’s XPac colorway. But very impressed with the comfort features and sheer volume!
Very much looking forward to your review of the soon to be released Tortuga Travel Bag 40l Lite version. Much like I preferred the Setout over the Outbreaker, I think the new Lite version of this travel bag might be my sweet spot for a new pack.
Im hoping all of your videos on travel backpacks follow this same, packed to the max, theme. Because without this...theres no way to know if a bag is really suited for you or not.

Hey Aaron! I've been ripping through your content and love your videos brotha! I do have a quick question for you. If you could only have this bag or the Aer Travel Pack 3, which one would you lean towards? I love the aesthetics of both, prefer the admin compartment of the Aer over the Tortuga, but love the additional 5L capacity and comfort level you discussed with the Tortuga. I'm going on a 2+ week trip to Japan so there will be a bunch of walking. Goal is to slighly underpack so I can have room for stuff I'll be purchasing. Also brining a packable Peak design duffle for day to day stuff, a peak design sling for my camera, and a matador packable freefly duffle 30 L for even more room for souvenirs and gifts. Is the tortuga that much more comfortable than the aer or is it slightly more comfortable? Would love your input! Thanks again for all of the great content!
Thanks so much! Both are super comfy but I’d give a moderate edge to Tortuga. I’d base your decision based on size, 40 liters is a lot bigger than 35 liters, so if you need that extra capacity then might be best to go with Tortuga
Old video, new comment! (Old but nice, by the way, as always.) Would you say this pack is a "big" 30L, a "small" 30L, or just . . .30L? I had their Laptop Pack, which is 24L, and it was oh-so-small for my laptop and just about everything else. I've also found Alpaka to fit way less than the advertised capacity. On the other side are packs from ILE, GR, ULA, and TBB--they make quite a few packs that fit a lot more than the numbers would suggest. PS--Totally unrelated question, but have you found that AER shoulder straps soften or break in with time/use? Thanks!!!
I do think the Alpaka shoulder straps break in a bit over time. As for the 30L Tortuga I don’t know cuz I only have/reviewed the 40L - but Tortuga bags are usually known for having solid capacity
If Tortuga didn't stick to their left-handed use design to access the side handle, I'd be sold. I do own the Outbreaker Laptop bag, but due to the freaking side handle being on the opposite side I tend to not use it very much. That single detail has become a huge deal to me as I am a big side handle fanatic, and if I cannnot access it without having to think about it when removing the bag from my back an then overcoming the hurdle of my watch in my left wrist which will snag with the shoulder strap, it's not going to be for me. Sticking to Aer, Heimplanet and Evergoods, until Tortuga reconsiders this design choice.
depends on the airline, your ticket, the mood of the person checking you in, and the weight of the bag. I'd say 50% of the time you'll be fine, but the other 50% you'll have to check it
Just to comment and be a pain. The order is: loose shoulder straps, put on hip belt. Pull shoulder straps tight. Pull load lifters tight. Then sternum strap.
I can see that perspective, but once you feel/use a $350 backpack, your thoughts might change. Believe me, you get what you pay for. Do you need to pay for a Mercedes when you can get a Toyota? Hell no. But the experience is NOT the same.
@@Nomads.Nation Sure, I see what you're saying. But this backpack in particular does not justify it. Apart from the comfortable straps, the main compartment and the front pocket look like garbage. The Nomatic travel bag is cheaper, just as waterproof, and looks better, for cheaper.

But the Tortuga Travel Backpack uses 10xs better materials than Nomatic, and bc of that is significantly more water resistant and durable. This is a fact, and rationalizes the price point for many.

They are not the only ones. Also many kick starter wonders came and went with a the first or second back pack and with them some good and interesting designs.

Can’t go wrong with either tbh. I’d base your decision off which size best fits your needs. Aside from that, the biggest distinguisher is price due to weather resistance. Tortuga is more expensive I think (due to higher quality / higher performance water resistant materials). Aer bags have great weather resistance (which are more than enough for the normal traveler), but certainly less so when compared to Tortuga. Hope that helps!

Hey Joseph, I’ve never reviewed a samsonite bag - hopefully soon! Aside from Nomatic bags, I recommend looking into the Aer Flight Pack 2, Minaal Daily 3.0, and the Black Ember Forge small. We’ve done reviews on all of them. And no, I have no idea if Nomatic is releasing a new version. Best of luck!

Hey Aaron, I am looking for a pack for my wife who is 5'0" and will need to walk a lot in France next year for 2 weeks. She has used an Osprey Fairpoint 40 but struggled with it a bit during a trip to Italy. That trip had less walking with the pack. Any thoughts on a bag she can handle?
Maybe the size if the problem. The Farpoint is considered to be one of the most comfortable in that size range, so if she struggled with that she'll likely struggle with anything around 40L. Maybe it's time to use a smaller bag, is that an option? Also, my 5'2 sister speaks highly of the Osprey Fairpoint, but I'm just the messenger, haven't reviewed it myself

I think the Minaal Carry-on 3.0 would be the perfect alternative to the Tortuga! Similar but better in most ways. Great video.

Thanks so much! Both are super comfy but I’d give a moderate edge to Tortuga. I’d base your decision based on size, 40 liters is a lot bigger than 35 liters, so if you need that extra capacity then might be best to go with Tortuga

Old video, new comment! (Old but nice, by the way, as always.) Would you say this pack is a "big" 30L, a "small" 30L, or just . . .30L? I had their Laptop Pack, which is 24L, and it was oh-so-small for my laptop and just about everything else. I've also found Alpaka to fit way less than the advertised capacity. On the other side are packs from ILE, GR, ULA, and TBB--they make quite a few packs that fit a lot more than the numbers would suggest. PS--Totally unrelated question, but have you found that AER shoulder straps soften or break in with time/use? Thanks!!!
I do think the Alpaka shoulder straps break in a bit over time. As for the 30L Tortuga I don’t know cuz I only have/reviewed the 40L - but Tortuga bags are usually known for having solid capacity
If Tortuga didn't stick to their left-handed use design to access the side handle, I'd be sold. I do own the Outbreaker Laptop bag, but due to the freaking side handle being on the opposite side I tend to not use it very much. That single detail has become a huge deal to me as I am a big side handle fanatic, and if I cannnot access it without having to think about it when removing the bag from my back an then overcoming the hurdle of my watch in my left wrist which will snag with the shoulder strap, it's not going to be for me. Sticking to Aer, Heimplanet and Evergoods, until Tortuga reconsiders this design choice.

depends on the airline, your ticket, the mood of the person checking you in, and the weight of the bag. I'd say 50% of the time you'll be fine, but the other 50% you'll have to check it

The order is: loose shoulder straps, put on hip belt. Pull shoulder straps tight. Pull load lifters tight. Then sternum strap.

I can see that perspective, but once you feel/use a $350 backpack, your thoughts might change. Believe me, you get what you pay for. Do you need to pay for a Mercedes when you can get a Toyota? Hell no. But the experience is NOT the same.
@@Nomads.Nation Sure, I see what you're saying. But this backpack in particular does not justify it. Apart from the comfortable straps, the main compartment and the front pocket look like garbage. The Nomatic travel bag is cheaper, just as waterproof, and looks better, for cheaper.
@@Labios_Rotos again, I respectfully disagree. There is no facts about the aesthetics of a bag - that's all about personal preference (and I agree, this is not the sexiest bag in the world). But the Tortuga Travel Backpack uses 10xs better materials than Nomatic, and bc of that is significantly more water resistant and durable. This is a fact, and rationalizes the price point for many.

They are not the only ones. Also many kick starter wonders came and went with a the first or second back pack and with them some good and interesting designs.

Can’t go wrong with either tbh. I’d base your decision off which size best fits your needs. Aside from that, the biggest distinguisher is price due to weather resistance. Tortuga is more expensive I think (due to higher quality / higher performance water resistant materials). Aer bags have great weather resistance (which are more than enough for the normal traveler), but certainly less so when compared to Tortuga. Hope that helps!

tough call, can't go wrong with either. This is a 40L bag tho, the Aer is 28L or 35L. So depends on how much packing space you need.

Hey Joseph, I’ve never reviewed a samsonite bag - hopefully soon! Aside from Nomatic bags, I recommend looking into the Aer Flight Pack 2, Minaal Daily 3.0, and the Black Ember Forge small. We’ve done reviews on all of them. And no, I have no idea if Nomatic is releasing a new version. Best of luck!

Hey Aaron, I am looking for a pack for my wife who is 5'0" and will need to walk a lot in France next year for 2 weeks. She has used an Osprey Fairpoint 40 but struggled with it a bit during a trip to Italy. That trip had less walking with the pack. Any thoughts on a bag she can handle?
Maybe the size if the problem. The Farpoint is considered to be one of the most comfortable in that size range, so if she struggled with that she'll likely struggle with anything around 40L. Maybe it's time to use a smaller bag, is that an option? Also, my 5'2 sister speaks highly of the Osprey Fairpoint, but I'm just the messenger, haven't reviewed it myself
