My 3-4 grade teacher (dear ms. Molly Hubbell) would bring her guitar to class and teach us so many wonderful songs back in 1966-67. I still remember the words to this song and how innocent we all were back then. Thank you for such a wonderful gift you gave us Ms. Hubbell...
I am English, but without You tube I probably would have never seen or heard the wonderful group. I would be about the same age as the audience at the time of recording. I look at the snippet of America at that time and think, what a shame , so much has changed, but it has in England as well, its more like a sigh of me getting old !
Yes, i surely do,, Not only in my head, but my mom and dads' heads ,too. They couldn't stop singing these great, great songs. My mom loved the bass of Tennesee Ernie Ford, and beautiful songs of Perry Como. lol. As a kid i grew up singing these ,too. Oh so good.
I am forever grateful that my parents bought an LP record of the Brothers Four back in the 60's when I wasn't 10 years old yet. So I have been listening for a long time, but it never gets old.
Remember this from around 63/64. I was very young but used to sing it. Always felt the poignancy of it, even back then. Sounds like a hymn. Kind of like "Michael Row Your Boat". Beautiful. Thanks for posting.
I first heard this song when i was twelve years old, now im curently 46. My son shared a deam with me today about my deceased daughter and this song came back to memory. As if my daughter reminded me that we will one day see her again. Blessed be Gods name-Ray Perez
the first time I heard this song was 9 years ago :). It was a song in 7th grade's English book. 5 years after that, I was the first year student at a university, far away from home, I cried when hearing this song :) Now, I'm a forth year student, have 4 year far away from home, hearing this song make me remember my family with all my love
I love this song so much, also Green fields too. Although I born in 1990, I still love old school music like them... Most of it very close to me... Touching my heart...
I am away from my home country since 2 months. I never used to miss my family. But after listening to this song, it helps nothing but to miss them more and more.
Jesus! This is the most beautiful recording of a concert I ever seen, the song is wonderful and look at the girls in the audience, I have no words to describe this scene...
I saw them In Fordham University in the early 60's. Didn't know until years later that my husband was at the same concert. We always loved the same music.
It is in 1967 to have heard this beautiful great song for the first time. It is a record of 45 rotations. The Brothers Four is the highest although many singers have sung this song. It is a good song echoed forever.
The composer of this Classic song is Hedy West in 1961. Many singers have covered this song over the years. Type the title, and view those versions on you tube. Hedy West does a live performance of her own song in 1964.
What a time travel feeling one gets watching & hearing this! I really miss when audiences & performers truly united like this without all the hollering, whistling, "waves", etc. & when singers actually could sing & play without lip syncing or lazer light shows, pyrotechnics, & grabbing their crotch! Audiences used to be SO much more polite also, & respected the entertainer, instead of trying to take over the show! One reason of many I MYSELF stopped performing. MISS those sweet days. Great video
my mom sang this song when she was in school, and it became my sister and my lulluby. We've never forgot it, and we both are going to sing it 2 our kids.
It Is Not possible to Even Imagine today on some college campus that the students would even sing along to "Lord I'm One, Lord I'm Two, Lord I'm Three, Lord I'm Four, Lord I'm Five Hundred Miles Away From Home, Lord I Can't go Back Home This a Way..." Just think how serene that moment of collective young hearts, all singing that personal but universal feeling of longing for a place called "...HOME...," ...and the people that love you....
This is a beautiful version, seems to be adapted to audience participation. Another version by The Seekers is haunting with a truly beautiful vocal from Judith Durham.
I sang this song on my Farewell in primary school... At that time going to a new school and leaving some friends behind seemed the biggest thing...Till today I finished 2 more schools and a college degree... left home... left home city... left family..left friends to find new ones ..even left the country,, Just cant believe how far every1 has reached.. And not after all these things, this one song brought back all the memories within 3 minutes and makes me happy and sad at the same time...
This song was a good reason for me to learn english. Thanks Getmaxmode for posting it. It is nice to listen it here when I am near to begin the curve of the 60's. next October. A big hug to all who love this music. Regards from Luis, a meloman from Lima PERU Latin America. (Visit my country, you already have a friend here) Thanks. nnnn
Thanks for this precious song:it express the authentic feeling of liberty and goodness of human nature to the world by american people (I suppose american) like another country cannot have done. Thanks and farewell. Blessings.
Amen! I fell the same. We sang this song too in 1967 during the monsoon trying to get our minds off of the rain and mud. Lots of the guys (me too) were crying afterwords.
Story is always the same brother, be it Europe or America or a sweaty mosquito laden Asian or African country, men folk leave home to earn and cherish the desire to go home one day to see the smile on the dear one's faces. Truly a universal song.
After a long time I heard the song. Actually I m 11 thousand miles away from home.. Missing my home badly. tears drooping down ....miss u mom, missing my home....
I have sung this song at my camp for as long as I can remember (so like... eight years.) I have never heard the original song and it's really pretty! It's an amazing song.
"The Brothers Four" One of the first groups I heard in 'Stereo' back in those days. I wonder where these great singers are today. They would be in their seventies by now!
If you miss the train I'm on You will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles A hundred miles, a hundred miles You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles Lord , I'm one. Lord , I'm two Lord , I'm three. Lord , I'm four Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home Away from home Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home Not a shirt on my back Not a penny to my name Lord, I can't go back home this way This way, Lord, I can't go back home this way
buddy ur not alone,, im 13000 miles away and i miss my family too,, its hard to go on when i see others wid their family during christmas and see me all alone..
@keeperoftheforest We are both right and wrong at the same time. The girl who wrote the song is Hedy West but the Journeymen recorded it before her. You can find her version in YT.

It's so nice to see young, old, men women everyone enjoying the song together.... Today you dont get to see that right???
truly one of the best folk singers in the turn of the 60s this is definitely one of the all time folk classic..............
Remember when you'd turn on the radio and hear a song like this and you couldn't get the tune out of your head all day long?
Yes, i surely do,, Not only in my head, but my mom and dads' heads ,too. They couldn't stop singing these great, great songs. My mom loved the bass of Tennesee Ernie Ford, and beautiful songs of Perry Como. lol. As a kid i grew up singing these ,too. Oh so good.
When you turned on the Radio. Who turns on the radio now a days?
Free thinkers.
16 tons anyone? ✊🏽 love that song
I am forever grateful that my parents bought an LP record of the Brothers Four back in the 60's when I wasn't 10 years old yet. So I have been listening for a long time, but it never gets old.
Oh, what a sound!! It makes me cry. All those days come back to me.

It's lovely to hear (and see) the audience singing along with their favorite.

I may be a 21 year old but I feel like I was born on 1950s because of listening countless times to this song.
I love this song so much, also Green fields too. Although I born in 1990, I still love old school music like them... Most of it very close to me... Touching my heart...
I am away from my home country since 2 months. I never used to miss my family. But after listening to this song, it helps nothing but to miss them more and more.
Beautiful music. Beautiful people. Beautiful times.
It reminds me so much of my late dad who passed away in 2008, he used to play this on his guitar and sing it. Thank you for the memory.
Jesus! This is the most beautiful recording of a concert I ever seen, the song is wonderful and look at the girls in the audience, I have no words to describe this scene...
Yes, many of us can't stop watching this. What a time piece. 1,800,000 viewers and counting! Thank you for posting this!
Beautiful song, one of the best thing your soul can hear!
Thanx for the posting of this song. My head is filled with memories of an era long gone. Great music like this isn't done anymore. So sad.
Love the audience singing the harmonies. Makes the performance
I miss my Dad so much when I hear this song... He played all these folk albums when I was a kid. Thanks for posting.
I saw them In Fordham University in the early 60's. Didn't know until years later that my husband was at the same concert. We always loved the same music.

i think the best part about this video is that the audience loved the song so much they sang it with the band that's something most musicians cant do.
いやぁー 古き良き時代のカントリーソングですね。心が癒されます。
なんて表現したらいいんだろう、魂が揺さぶられる素晴らしいsong
です。 UPありがとう。

I love the audience's eyes and how they sang along with the Brothers Four :) ♥
this a song which brought me at my school days, i just can not explain the feelings but this gives me always a soft touch at my heart.
It Is Not possible to Even Imagine today on some college campus that the students would even sing along to "Lord I'm One, Lord I'm Two, Lord I'm Three, Lord I'm Four, Lord I'm Five Hundred Miles Away From Home, Lord I Can't go Back Home This a Way..." Story is always the same brother, be it Europe or America or a sweaty mosquito laden Asian or African country, men folk leave home to earn and cherish the desire to go home one day to see the smile on the dear one's faces. Truly a universal song.
This song reminds me of my singing class, where late Mrs Jacinta used to make us sing this lovely song.

It pulls at your heart, even today. Pure and perfect.
It takes me back to 66-67 when I was an exchange student in USA.
I wonder what the character of the US was at this time. I wish the US still had this much beauty.
This got to be the best version of this beautiful song.

Yo tenía 15 años y eran mis primeros guateques.
Los Brothers Four triunfaban en España.
"The Brothers Four" One of the first groups I heard in 'Stereo' back in those days. I wonder where these great singers are today. They would be in their seventies by now!
If you miss the train I'm on
You will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
Lord , I'm one. Lord , I'm two
Lord , I'm three. Lord , I'm four
Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home
Away from home
Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home
Not a shirt on my back
Not a penny to my name
Lord, I can't go back home this way
This way,
Lord, I can't go back home this way
