📚Description: This 1982 Gibson Les Paul first surfaced to the public about 7 years ago when Gary Dick of Gary's Classic Guitars released it from his collection. He had purchased it about 15 years prior from a doctor looking to downsize his collection. Back in 2017, 11k was an INSANE price tag for a 1982 Les Paul when most would be lucky to see half, but it sold quickly and I recently purchased it ~ 6 years later from the gentleman who purchased it from him.
After extensive analysis, this is basically a Gibson Standard 82 model, but with BIGGER neck, Grover Tuners, Ink Stamped Serial number and a top in a league of its own. Standard 82s usually have nice tops, but it is the ink stamp serial that transforms this guitar into the formal "prehistoric" category which is very cool!

We the jury, find the guitar: “quilty”
That legit made me laugh a hell of a lot harder than I thought it would!!! Hahahahahaha!!! Thank you for that!
lolol
Great one
you kinda right, doe.
it'll never see daylight again and it's gonna be locked up somewhere in a sealed room.
freaky.
I concur...
It’s so cool to hear Strings and Things mentioned. I grew up near Memphis, and after I started playing guitar (1989), every year, for my birthday, I would ask to go to Memphis and to Strings and Things. I saw my first Black Beauty there and would drool over the guitars. I was so bummed when I heard it closed.
Where did you live back then? I lived in Collierville for 4 years.
Looks more like an ebony FB. It also has the shine that rosewood doesn’t. Young ebony wood can have “blonde” streaks.
I had a prs se Korean and it had a rosewood fretboard that looked just like that. Basically looked just like ebony. Which i do also have several ebony guitars as well. So idk
@@HauntedGuitarMan maybe they applied India ink along with fretboard conditioner ?
Man, those Tim Shaw PAF humbuckers sound amazing! If other examples sound this good, their reputation is well deserved!
Tim Shaw was just trying, to do what Seth Lover, created.
My jaw just hit the floor.
Anytime trogly says not click bate you know it’s gonna be good
That’s kinda what I figured. I clicked because it said that lol
Or clickbait
@aricpaul yea rite! That top is INSANE! Or it’s just a slow news day 🤷♂️
But he also tried to convince us we could buy one square foot of land that doesn't exist and become a lord.
@@marcreno893insane top is not news so I’m going with option B lol ✌🏼
That's a beauty! My '82 30th Anniversary Goldtop has an ABR-1 bridge, thumb bleeders, One-piece back and one-piece mahogany neck. The pups are Tim Shaw pups. It has brown back plates, as well. It's a low serial number "B" run of the series ( A, B and C). I'm not sure where it was made, but am pretty sure it was not Kalamazoo made. I've had it since new.
Dragon wood.
Yeah, very snake/dragon scale-ish
That dazzling top is like a boiling cauldron of seething rock riffs! Amazing!
Ditto
That’s the sickest quilt I’ve EVER seen
its a very nice one for a Gibson, but if you are looking at the boutique builders this is not a top one for sure : )
Right?! It almost looks fake.
@@mindpyre1189could not agree more! My PRS Custom 24 has a real crazy Qulit top. It is even one piece. Had to pick it up when I saw it. It was love at first sight, although it ruined me financially to be honest :D
Greetings from Germany!
@@siwiaz5494 yes PRS has nice woods, but the Private Stock is the only ones that can compete with true boutique builders : )
I really think that some of these tops are so different from what we know of quilted tops that could be called dragon scales tops. This is just such a top . Absolutely gorgeous. I personally love a guitar that the tones vibrate through out the body. Something about the tones being able to be experienced physically in addition to audibly is very inspiring when i play.
That kind of resonance that you talk about is why I love the SG.
@@frankwebster9110 ove got a couple that I got from Trogley and I also have an American Specoal Telecaster that all have that kind of resonate characteristics. I've also got a Red Dot Pro 335 a Casino and of course some acoustics like a Yamaha FJ230 12 string that is a 1969 model that has the perfect spruce top that reonstes well. If your looking for an acoustic that sounds great that isn't $20k or better more inthe range of $500 to $2k you can't go wrong with Abell aged Yamaha.
As many photos as I’ve seen of flametops and quilts, that has to be the best one. I have a Gibson/Guitar Trader ‘59 reissue that I ordered and received in (I’m pretty sure) 1984. It has the real unique 1959 neck (one thing Guitar Trader made sure was done correctly in these special guitars) shape that is perfect for my hands and it has always been my baby. I wouldn’t call it a baseball bat neck, I have a 1962 Les Paul/SG that is a true baseball bat neck which I like a lot and is not too big for my hands.
I'd love to have a quilt top like that but I can never find one because you buy them all!
Lovely guitar. I like the way that the quilt kind of forms squiggles at some angles. Glad that it has chrome hardware and that they didn't decide to go with gold. When it's dismantled the ABR bridge posts do look a bit spindly and you can understand how 'post lean' develops. I'm OK with the later designs in their place.
Holy blankets Bat Man! That's a quilllty top!
Sometime, can you do an episode just about what exactly "prehistoric" is, everything that they have, don't have and all that for us new kids lol
I could be wrong but I think he's got some videos that go over those kind of details. Try looking through his old videos
@@frankwebster9110 he kinda does in a ton of episodes, but I am talking about more of like, "the definitive guide of what 'prehistoric' Gibson Les Paul's are, and specs, etc." ya know what I mean? Or maybe just write an article and put it up on his website or something... Kinda like a glossary of terms used by collectors or something
@@wesleed1120
years like 1989 thru 1991
Before Custom Shop Reissues
Had 2 , 1990 All Gold 1960 LP , 1990 50s Reissue
# 0 0880 8 .2 LBs
Cream soap bar covers
P90 DC double coil on bottom of pups
Better known as P 100s
different than P90 no microphonic sound , just Clean sound fuller then Start but way different than Humbuckers.
After 1991 Custom Shop did the Reissues
The All Gold I sold due to MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS left hand is Affected, fingers , really hard to do chords or Lead , played Bass before Guitar, Now back to Just Bass .
Bought both LPs New .
"This is what dreams are made of." Couldn't have said it better myself. That is truly a stunning Les Paul. I can see why you had to add that to your collection. A truly incredible guitar. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Damn. That is gorgeous.
Should've left the extra thumb wheels.
I have an 89 pre, and it has the extra thumb wheels. I like it.
I got it from GC. They sold it as a Classic. The guy from gc said that Rick from cheap trick was in his store and played it for quite some time. It's a cherry burst with crazy ghost flames. Thinking about putting my joe bonamassa 1959 pickups in it as soon as I have time. Currently I have seymour 59s in it. Funny thing, I was sure I had dimarzio 36th anniversary in it. Anyway, congrats!
Definitely ebony fretboard, not rosewoood.
Also, I'd suggest putting the bridge back the way it was - playability trumps all other concerns
Love those old narrow head stocks . Thanks Yoda for playing it sounds real Good !
Too bad its cherry sunburst. but the top is badass!!!!
I don't like the Cherry burst either or the tomato soup but like you said. I didn't even care to cringe at the burst with that tight quilt!
Just being that translucent amber would have made that top explode!
cherry sunburst my fav
I know it's the only problem.
@@WilliamHaisch👍
" it's almost a bad thing" ...what a great song name ' ...Beautiful quilty top looks like a sunny beach and those Tim Shaws.
Wow!What natural tone! Super resonant.
Love it! Your videos are like ASMR vids for guitar. This one def has the taste of Grandmas wrapped strawberry candies, ya know, the ones in the strawberry color schemed wrappers that you would find in her sock drawer. Pain in the ass to dig for but oh so delicious once found.
My recent R7 has an almost-black rosewood board as well. What a gorgeous piece! Sounds huge, too.
Notice the movement on that top vs a PRS.
Yea thats pretty funny comparison lol one company makes works of art the makes trash with qc that rivals Chinese knock offs. You must of never seen a prs in your life
@@user-li3pu4du6k You can worship PRS if you want to. But it's obvious your take on Gibson is foolish. And what I was talking about has nothing to do with manufacturing quality. It's the difference in how they finish their guitars.
cool guitar ! on the top i believe that scooped up/dished carve is called recurve
Beautiful 😊
As an old timer, this guitar is a very pretty example of a 'new' Les Paul. Old Les Pauls were made in 1961 or earlier! All the mojo is in the old machines. ( I personally have a 1965 SG-Les Paul. Looks like a trainwreck, Sounds great. I buy'em with my eyes closed!
I have 2 guitars with ebony fretboards. They have the same grain pattern.
Curious, How many degrees is the headstock angle?
What a beautiful top!
I don't even like quilt tops, but sometimes a piece of wood is so beautiful you can't help but love it.
Gorgeous guitar
That flamage is out of control good looking...
Very nice guitar. For me I thought this to be extra dark rosewood. I have a very similar board on a classic from 92'.
That top is gorgeous!
Damnit Trogly!!!! Another absolutely gorgeous one... Man
Very nice as always, but I wish Trog’s would’ve shown us the pickups. He had the screws out, I guess he forgot?
I’d bet my house it’s a slightly porous ebony board. If it’s a rosewood board, it’s Brazilian with that level of chatoyancy.
That is one stunning top!
YOU CANT HAVE ALL THE PAULS!
Is it a clownburst ?
- No it isn't...
- Oh....yes it is....
- Oh....no it isn't....
Same feeling.
Well done ! cutting and "BOOK" matching any type of maple is a talented art ! your Gibson guitar exposed some mighty deep grain movement ! I would love to see your guitar with the darker version of "sun burst "
I would love a LP with this finish just because of Jimmy!
Page and Slash are the reason I got my 1991 flame top cherry sunburst Les Paul as a kid. Lucky for me, my dad was generous to a fault and bought it for me when I was still a beginner.
That is definitely a special example!
That is gorgeous! Love it!
One of the best sounding LP`s you`ve reviewed and that top! 😍
My dream is to own one with that kind of quilt to the top. In like a dirty lemon fade
Trogly
You wouldn’t know this however
The darkness of the rose neck
Comes from what we use to use to condition the neck is ,
Pledge lemon oil furniture polish
Yes … used it for many guitars works like a charm … however
Darkens it significantly… thx trogly …
You think that he doesn’t know that conditioning the fretboard makes it darker? He literally has a show about guitars that he takes apart, cleans and puts back together. You’re actually watching it. You commented on it. I think he knows that conditioning the fretboard with oil will make it darker. It’s not exactly rocket science.
Sweet those things you were just mentioning are exactly in the clothes
That bat like neck contour with someone a progressive consistency to
the front board radius. In terms of resonance while that one really fits
Ebony has a tighter grain. That's a very dark rosewood.
Sweet 'Ten Top' on a 1982 Les Paul "Standard"! 'Clown burst' suits the quilting I think.
That axe is on fire!
This one is a beauty and it sounds good too! Thanks for the video Austin 😎👍⭐️🕊🦋🕊🙏✌️🎉🇺🇸
Gibson Les Paul Héritage 80 Élite are the Best mojo guitars ever. I'm looking forward to buy one
That quilt top is gorgeous, and they did make a lot of good guitars during the Norlin era, but I've yet to see one from that time with a top carve that doesn't suck. Regardless, very cool, unique piece of Gibson history you've got there.
I had a Jimmy Wallace guitar that looked exactly like that. Had to have been made from the same bunch of maple. Mine had a Jimmy Wallace truss rod cover.
Never seen a quilt on a Gibson like that!! For me it would be perfect with a 60s neck
Speechless 🔥❤
Beautiful quilted maple top. 👍👍👍
Omfg!
And it sounds great as well. Great acquisition!!
Best top Ivave ever seen!
Not only is this the best looking prehistoric I've ever seen but it sounds really damn good. Very good find Trogs.
Cool guitar! But I would have the saddles on the bridge redone; your string alignment is off
Beautiful “Heritage Series 82”. It’s supposed to say that on the truss rod cover.
The grain in that fretboard belies its true heritage as a uncommonly dark piece of rosewood.
That's a beauty & those Shaw's sound wicked. Not usually the biggest fan of his bridge pups but this one sounded wicked.
Salutations Austin!
Exceptional pre-historic Les Paul Quilt Top, with an amazing top!
It reminds me a lot of the NAMM show Les Paul that is in your personal collection.
It sounds great and looks fantastic, the quilt top has a very 3D effect look to it.
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
Looks like a one of a kind, plug it in and sounds like any other.
This one is all about the "feel." Its resonate qualities are unlike most
That is a bomb quilt top. Nice score!
Great find Austin
This guitar sounds amazing!!!
I would double check with Gibson on that fingerboard. I still think it's ebony. Ebony isn't always truly black. In fact, its often quite brown.
Quilted maple is notoriously difficult to work with as the grain goes literally in all directions.
That's got a Gorgeous Top & Sunburst. Congrats.
Yeah so basically this LP is one I would break my own rules for and purchase. Looks great and sounds great. 👍🏻👍🏻
Okay, as a rule I don’t usually dig quilt tops… but, wow, that one is awesome!
Now that's a quilt top 😱
Uiii that fretboard should be the standard for all Gibsons.
That top looks like CGI is unreal.
Whoa - that serial number in the pickup cavity - first you said the second last digit was an 8 - then you said it was production number 65. You were right the second time.
I must say Trogly your knowledge of Les Pauls is impressive! Today I bought an iced tea 60’s standard, I love it!
Wow wow wow. That quilt is unreal!
Trogly I don’t think that’s “dark rosewood” lol looks ebony
Reminds me of the dragons belly an throat off the Hobbit movies lol..super quilted top wow, and good thing they dint throw a bigsby on it as well... personally I'm a flamed top guy, quilt doesn't do much for me and yes that's weird ..lol ...
What's crazy about that guitar is it looks like an Epiphone Ultra. & cherry sunburst? Never.
This one sounds really good 👍🇺🇸
To me that fretboard is 100% ebony
19:50 what song is that?
The pattern is amazing
The peekaboo effect is incredible oml
Gardiner and Houlgate auction in June The 11/th i believe !!!
It sure is beautiful!
well this is certainly a beautiful guitar, and im sure quite expensive, but its certainly not with out being messed with and modified in the years ago, even if restored some what to original status. still modified alot for sure. you cant call it original because its not
i miss the would you rock or not series
The top does look like dragon scales. Beautiful guitar.
I don’t know if I’m the only one that has tried this, but if you use night vision and I don’t know if this is only for my security camera model but you can tell the difference between very dark rosewood or ebony with it instantly.
That would be around 720 guitars if u play three a day for 8 months
