Yeah. Sounds like 15 years after the real Miles left, the true Miles came back - as rabbi. :-) A revelation. And Kenny Wollesen wears a t-shirt of the anarcho-syndicalists I really love these guys!
Yes, he uses it in the end of the video, I try to learn it, it's very hard. You have, when you play, to keep air in your cheeks, and at the same time to blow it, and to breathe by nose... My saxophone teacher made me a demonstration, this is very impressive. Non stop playing during a few minutes... Wow, respect.
Yes!! On top of featuring more of Wolleson's awesome playing, Sex Mob has the excellent Briggan Krauss, a sax player who's only about 100 times more compelling than Zorn.
sorry i dont have a link but if you type in john zorn interview on the first or second page youll find it. there arent that many interviews of him so it would be quick to find.
sandbrn has suprised me a few times I think its funnny people discussing the avant guarde because once you discuss it, its done. Must keep things forward at all times. Zorn sounds better than usual in this concert?????
its funny i read a interview of him on the internet from 2000 and the reporter thought that zorn was like zappa. it was interesting hearing what zorn had to say about zappa
@HipHopkins09 Yeah I've seen some of those songs from that concert at the roundhouse and it was lame. I understand completely where your coming from. My favorite FZ records are stuff like Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Make a Jazz Noise Here, etc. Although the Q and A in the beginning seemed to be cool
@HipHopkins09 well the varese comparison is a little bit of a stretch but i still think of zorn as a modern day zappa of sorts. with the amount of genre shifting, prolificness, and overall quality of work, the comparison is understandable.
no... it's exactly the same performance... they have recorded it from mezzo chanel and put on DVD... i should make a copy for myself... and i'll put it here, for sure...
@brian....some people just don't "get" you. Well I do : ) I watched Zorn crumple an empty potato chip bag around a mic at a show. Goes to show what lengths an artist will go to innovate.
I am a big fan of John Zorn but a bigger fan of Zappa and Varese (completely obsessed with Zappa actually) and as much as I love Zorn's eclectic approach to his compositions, they never seem to transcend the generical influences he is working with at the time. Zappa's compositions..at least the bulk of them..to me, achieve a higher level of synthesis..more indistinguishable from his influences. Perhaps I'm less familiar with Zorn's catalogue..if u have any favorite compositions I'd like to hear
What's funny is that David Sanborn played on one of Tim Berne's albums, Diminutive Mysteries (Mostly Hemphill), a single recording whose virtues far exceed most of what could be found on John Zorn's 6 dozen albums. By the way, Zorn was never the most original Ameican musician. With his recent composed work, I think he's finally starting to bloom out of his 'weird-for-the-sake-of-weird' po-mo bullshit period. The endlessly redundant Masada empire seems to be the funding for all that.

One of the best sax solos I've ever heard.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this concert and just realized now that John Zorn is wearing a Mr. Bungle shirt. Love this even more now.
This cannot be "liked" enough. Work of genius. Thanks to Mezzo for broadcasting such fantastic music.
one of the best composers and sax players of our generation
I like to think of John Zorn as the modern frank zappa or edgard varese
Amazing. Hypnotizing. Magic.
Create something absolutely free, it's the best job in the world

God, that Fender Rhodes sound....the noodling.....like a Miles Davis warmup....ah...the memories.
amazing, awesome use of circular breathing
I want to find a DVD of this show too. Did you ever find out if one is available?
¡Que volada! /What a trip!

Hey there, nice to see a fellow NZSM student commenting :)

you can always contact mezzo to know who produced this show and get a copy for non-commercial use... sometimes that works

If Oliver Stone ever decides to make a movie about Zorn, he absolutely has to cast James Woods to play him.

Great!
If any of you get the chance, see a show at Zorn's venue The Stone in NYC. It's a nonprofit place for New Music. Check it out!

Crazy, I'll try it with my trombone.

"Zorn is closer to Johnny rotthe than to Johnny Hodges"
Actually..ignore my comment. I need to think more on it.
Modern Zappa? Zorn is only 13 years younger...
