I used to listen to this song on radio headphones when I was hospitalized for a suicide attempt. It hit me with such raw emotion even when I felt really numb. Sometimes if I just need to get a good cry out I listen to this song. I don't think it's inherently sad there's just something about it that is so raw.
Its jam packed with emotion, I love it so much... Take care of yourself Cora... :) I wish you a better ride in life going forward. It is what you make of it.. :)

Okay so I figured out the order of the 3 songs. There are a few clues in the videos. 1. Life In The City. It's New Year's of 1979 (there's a banner hung in the bar where she's drinking). Gloria has sex with the man in the bar and ends up pregnant, even though at the end of the video we find out she's married (when she puts on the ring). In the note her husband leaves her before he falls asleep he mentions her mom being in the hospital, but stable. 2. Donna. Gloria now has a baby, which we can only assume was from that guy at the bar (no idea if the husband knows it's not his). She's still drinking, and we find out her mom passes away from that tiny clip showing her tombstone which says she died on March of 1979. I'm guessing this video takes place not much after her death, since the baby looks only months old. I can't figure out if her drinking is out of guilt (from having a baby of a stranger and not telling her husband) or from not having a close connection and being neglected by her mom (which we now see her doing to her own child) and never being able to really fix it since she's passed away. 3. Gloria. Their relationship is going down the drain, the drinking is at its worst, and they don't seem to pay much attention to the baby. She hurts him, she's driving him to the hospital and they get in a car accident. She's running away from the scene I think because she's been drinking and will more than likely be sent to jail. There might be a deeper meaning to these but I'm a little narrow minded when it comes to this one. Feel free to correct/add to this theory. Things to note: - The baby's name is shown in Donna and Gloria with the letters hanging from his crib. They spell out Jimmy. -Gloria's mom, Donna, outlived her husband by 25 years. He passed away on January 7, 1954. She passed on March 8, 1979. Edit: thanks for adding to this while still being respectful/not toxic. this is such a lovely fan base ❤
A thing not making sense to me tho is in the song Donna it says "a little boy was born in February". A baby conceived on NYE couldn't be born in February..so not sure what to make of that. She's out on Dec 31 '78/Jan 1 '79, Donna dies a couple months later, baby would be born late September/early October '79. So I think if that is the baby conceived this night, he could be ~5 months old and that'd put us around the year anniversary of Donna's death in the Donna vid (March 8, 1980) 🤔 still not sure about the February thing tho
@@lizquandt That's a good point. Maybe it's talking about another little boy? Idk, that's just an assumption. We do only have 3 parts out of 10 apparently. Thanks for your pov!
Lyrics Whoa-whoa Whoa-whoa And if the city's skyscrapers rise over this island Would you be glad to see Manhattan for once? Is this woman meant to be the same as the one from Cleopatra? Her father's gravestone was marked in the 50s, whereas this is set in '79. So the timeline adds up that her dad could've died while she was in high school, if she's a little older than she looks.

So I just started my first ever real job back in Feb. It's in a whole different city in another part of the country. I'm pretty much alone the entire time coz I don't have a roommate and of course quarantine and I'm just vibing with this song so much because it gives such a 'lonely in a foreign city' vibe which I kind of feel right now. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?
I figured out the order: Part 2: Life in the City Part 1: Donna Part 3: Gloria Part 2 shows her before her mom passes away in part 1. While dealing with the grief she gave birth to her son but to a different father (the real dad is seen in life in the city). Signs of postpartum depression begins in part 1 - Donna as she's struggling to deal with the grief of her mom passing away and raising a child whose real father is unknown. Part 3 is the climax of the trilogy as we can see their relationship (with her real husband seen at the end of part 2) falling apart.
@@lazystonedmonk438 I feel bad for her. It's depression. If the order is 2, 1, 3 then depression is starting here as we see the note of her mom's (Donna's) critical condition, then she's dead by the Donna music video, and depression is taking it's toll and in the third music video (Gloria) she succumbs.
"If the sun don't shine on me today And if the subways flood and bridges break Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave Or will you rail against your dying day..." I love how it ties in with Sleep on the Floor. :)

Chapter 3 is already on
Who came up with the concept for the Gloria video and who directed it? It's brilliant and moving. A real punch in the feels.
in the description,
Director: Kevin Phillips
Produced by: Neighborhood Watch
Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers said the character is based on a member of his family so the concept probably came from him originally.
Uhh. I know that. The question is about the imagery and motifs are specifically created for the video. The car rushing in. The car peeling out. The screen door getting kicked out. The bottles being thrown. The use of slow motion to capture Gloria’s emotion on that beat. The use of these cinematic storytelling elements is a specific creative choice not necessarily dictated by replicating real world events. I am curious about the creation of the these scenes.... not if there was a real addict in their lives.
In this video, I am curious about the VFX used for the insemination beat. What VFX house did they use? Etc.

They won't take it from me
No-oh-oh, whoa
Whooooa-whooooa
Whooooa-whooooa
And if you leave, don't leave me all alone
'Cause I'll be scared, I'll be naked, I'll be cold
And I miss my dad, Cleopatra sitting on the phone
So take me back off these streets
And we'll never be apart
Together from the start
Never, never, falling back alone
Oh-whoa, living life in the city
Oh-whoa, it will never be pretty
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, we can plan if we make it
Oh-whoa, we won't let 'em
They won't take it from me
No-oh-oh, whoa
And if the sun don't shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you just lay down and dig your grave
Or will you rail against the dying day
¡Al fin alguien puso la letra!
Thanks ❤
The first time I heard this song and heard "if subways flood and bridges break" I balled. Thank you everything you create for us
the only music that still haves something unique nowadays, love it!

I really love The Luminners since 2012.they never cease to make good music. It hits you different everytime
Thisis a masterpiece
So I just started my first ever real job back in Feb. It's in a whole different city in another part of the country. I'm pretty much alone the entire time coz I don't have a roommate and of course quarantine and I'm just vibing with this song so much because it gives such a 'lonely in a foreign city' vibe which I kind of feel right now. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?
I figured out the order:
Part 2: Life in the City
Part 1: Donna
Part 3: Gloria
Part 2 shows her before her mom passes away in part 1.
Thanks for that bro, you saved me. ❤️
But ain’t part 3 about her mom Gloria?
@@mateusdias4070 Donna is Gloria's mother
Part 2, she is a married women.
@@theRobler I believe Junior is Gloria's son. If you see the description box, it says Junior Sparks part coming soon.
Having seen Gloria and Donna first, this video made me sad for the husband 😭
so it is not his child i suppose ?
@@OtherGameVideo probably, which makes it even sadder.
I hate her. Thats all i can say. Not only she puts suffering into the life of the husband but especially the child
I hate that woman
@@lazystonedmonk438 I feel bad for her. It's depression. If the order is 2, 1, 3 then depression is starting here as we see the note of her mom's (Donna's) critical condition, then she's dead by the Donna music video, and depression is taking it's toll and in the third music video (Gloria) she succumbs.
Art is a combination of spirit, hard work, and a beautiful mind.
I’m digging the mix of the new and the old into a new story that I’m falling in love with! Not to mention the storytelling through the videos!
Sus canciones y sus videos son ARTE en su máxima expresión ❤️ todo el amor desde México 🇲🇽
"If the sun don't shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave
Or will you rail against your dying day..."

Woo, woo
Woo, woo
And if the city's skyscrapers rise over this island
Would you be glad to see Manhattan for once?
I knew the dream, it died, JMZ line, Myrtle, and Broadway
But I'd be glad to see Manhattan for once
Woah woah, living life in the city
Woah woah, it will never be pretty, oh, oh
Woah woah, we can plan if we make it
Woah woah, we won't let 'em
They won't take it from me, no, oh, oh, woah (2, 3, 4)
Woo, woo
Woo, woo
And if you leave, don't leave me all alone
'Cause I'll be scared, I'll be naked, I'll get cold
And I miss my dad and Cleopatra sitting on a phone
So take me back off these streets and we'll never be apart
Together from the start
Never, never falling back alone
Living life in the city
Oh oh, it will never be pretty, oh, oh
Oh oh, we can plan if we make it
Woah woah, we won't let 'em
They won't take it from me, no, oh, oh, woah

I could feel the aura of the clip. And what about that song? Amazing!
I got goosebumps when the lyrics of "Sleep on the Floor" appeared. Peeeeerfect actress, by the way. Can't wait for more! Thank you for this piece of art.
We don’t deserve the brilliance of The Lumineers, but I’m here for it.
Sleep on the Floor’s lyrics showed up when they’re literally sleeping on a mattress on the floor i love the small details of their music videos
every video just always makes you wanna go back to other ones.
My heart did a somersault at the Sleep on the Floor reference 😭💜
