I have recently only just explored the idea of creative journaling as i have a stash of pictures and words i have kept from magazines over the years that have attracted me. My intention was to use them in my scrapbooking somehow but journaling like you do gives me so much more inspiration on how to use them!

Hey Elizabeth...do you mean when I use the frame when I'm going through the magazine? I don't do either, I just tear out the page for the future....I only use the frame to help me see images. The reason I only tear it out is I may change my mind about how I'm going to use that specific image and I don't want to mark it up or cut it out until I'm sure how it will go into my journal. The frames are an excellent approach. As one browses, keeping words and phrases in mind make an huge, utilitarians stash. I frequently save faces - great for altering. This is a very practical video with a fantastic recycling undertone.

I am new to art journaling and collage and it's been bugging me for a while now how I judge what size images to fit several journal books I have. love the frame idea! i am definitely going to try that the next time i'm tearing crap outta magazines. i use a lot of the images pretty abstractly so i like the idea of visualizing pieces of the composition as i'm ripping :) it's like inspiration from the inspiration. good advice about going back thru the magazine more than once. i always find more! thanks for sharing.

Hey Marisa.....the frames are SO easy to make, use your punches or dies to cut the frames out even faster! I have several sizes and types (circles, squares, oblong) by my side when I'm going through my magazines. They help a lot....also a long skinny one that represents washi tape...that's a good one to keep near you! TFW and commenting. Joanne
Hi Amanda! I used to use my hands to frame pictures to see if they might work, when I realized it would be SO much easier to just cut a few frames to help me along - much faster too. Hi Angelica.....sure, happy to help. Here are the sizes of frames that I use regularly. The measurements I am giving you are of the "viewing" area, so you'll want to add a border to that measurement. 3.5" x 5"; 3" circle; 3/4" x 6" (to simulate washi tape); 2.5" x 2.5". Those are the ones I use most frequently to view images. Hope that helps. Joanne
Hi! Oh my gosh...I just discovered you on YT....I am binge watching all your videos!! I would love to do this and I have, a bit...I just can't seem to stick to it. I always think "my life is just not that exciting to journal!" But you always seem to come up with stuff...what is your secret? WOW...such a sweet and awesome message - thank you so much. You really made my day. I know what you mean about your life not being that exciting...I used to think the same thing. Daily journaling really made me shy away from consistently working in a journal. I like working on a week at a time and honestly, much of my journal entries are about current events, memories I have about something, funny things that happen, a song that triggers a memory - things like that. I work full time, but I try not to journal about work....every once in a while it creeps in, but for the most part, I just want it to be about my life outside of work. I plan on showing my storage system in my November flip (in about a week). I hope you'll come back and watch that video. When I actually sit down to journal, I've already been thinking about what I want to write and I start thinking about the best way to represent that thought. Sometimes the images themselves drive my journaling. I keep my graphics by category, so it's fairly easy to find what I'm looking for - at least most of the time. It's seeing standard images of my stamps for not what they are, but what they could be, that I'm having difficulty with. Seeing with new eyes and getting over that creative hump. I like your view-finders -- maybe they might help even with food packaging (where I get some of my letters, besides doodles, stamps and stickers).
Hi Dolores - YES, the frames can really help you to see things and they are so easy to make. I read about why you don't like to cut older things and I totally understand that...but when I say magazines, I'm talking about current magazines, the ones you can get everywhere. Real Simple, Martha Stuart Living and Oprah all have some great images. Our local library sells magazines for 25 cents and sometimes they have them for free.

Hi Nanci.....nothing really special with making the frames....they are very easy to make. I used index cards and just cut a square out of the middle using a craft knife. No measurements needed.....make several different sizes. If you have any large punches, you could use those too. Very, very simple. Hope that helps. xoxo Joanne
What a great idea. I never thought to use them for like washi! I've been cutting out words and images. Thanks for pointing that out. Do you cut out the images right away or do you cut out the page and sort them? I started to cut them out and now I have a pile of words and images but they aren't sorted in any way just thrown in a pile in my draw.
mom2triplets04 SO happy you found this video helpful. It's amazing what you can do with magazine images when you look at them differently. I rip and sort as I go, then I try to file them by category once a week. Otherwise that pile can get big! Words and phrases I generally store by the size if the font...so really big, tall words are sorted separately from small fonts and small phrases. Hi Lidima.....I use the frames all of the time because they are so helpful, so I am super happy you found that helpful. I store my images a couple of different ways....when it's full pages, I store by categories, I've found about 10 different ways categories that work for me and I keep the full pages in file folders. When I've cut them out already, but haven't used them, I store them in an upright vertical file folder that holds about 6 file folders that are nicely filled. Again stored by categories. Phrases are stored in a binder by large, medium and small. Hope that helps...I really should do a video on image storage - I think that might be helpful. Do you first journal and then go through the mag to find an image or do you collect images because they're great and then journal and take something ready cut? Oh I definitely understand your question - I have lots of magazines too!! I go through my magazines on a regular basis and pull images/phrases/backgrounds out that I like. ANYTHING that causes me to pause will generally get ripped out of the magazine. I store my images in file folders by categories. When I'm looking for inspiration, I'll go through my files OR if I'm journaling and need an image, I'll look through them. Hope that helps! Joanne
Thanks, Joanne, for these tips about magazine images. My question is what is the best glue to use when adding magazine images to a journal? I have been shying away from the shiny thin pages of magazines because no matter how much I flatten it out, I still get these little ripples when dry, and it looks awful. CC's Creations. Hi CC! I use a glue stick, either Elmer's or Uhu, but mostly Elmer's Purple glue stick. They are very cost effective and can be bought in packs of 6 and 12' especially during back to school. I find if I put an even coat down ( which is why I like the purple because I can see it) and smooth out with a soft cloth, I have no wrinkling or problems with lifting. You have to use a sufficient of glue, but not globs. Honestly the key is really burnishing the image down with the soft cloth. When burnishing, start in the center of the image and smooth outward. Once the image is down, spend a few seconds, focusing on the edges. I think that will help solve your wrinkling problem. I put hundreds of images down with little issue. Hope that helps. TFW. Joanne
How do you cut around the details in your images? Do you use special scissors or an exacto knife? I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it! I can get magazines from the thrift store for super cheap. I'm excited to get started.

Patience and practice help too - LOL. I have a difficult time using an exacto knife, but if you're good at using one it would work well too. Bargain magazines are so fun to find and use, right?! cindy LeJeune hi Cindy....I just made the frames using cardstock and index cards. No particular size, just guesstimate sizes that would work for you. They don’t have to be exact or perfect, just something to look thru and frame images. Hope that helps. Xoxo Joanne

Hi Vicki! Using them is the key - because they can accumulate rather quickly! I keep my images, by category, in a stand-up file on my desk. Prepared images (all cut and ready to go) are in file folders and I go through them when I'm journaling. Additionally, torn out pages are kept in file folders in a drawer separated by the same categories. For me, the key is to go through my images regularly and purge any that I just don't think I will use....and really keep the images front and center so I'll use them. Hope that helps. Oh they are super simple....decide how big you want your viewing area...for example my washi tape template has a viewing window of 1" x 6" and I add a 1" border all the way around the opening so I have something to hang onto. My square piece has a viewing window of 2.5" and add an inch all the way around. The rectangle measures 3.5" x 5" with an additional inch all the way around the window. Just decide the size you want and go from there. See...super simple. Let me know if you need more detail. Joanne

Your idea of several window templates is a revelation to me. It's so easy but I just didn't think of it. My brain is a bit stunted and not flowing right with this media yet. You have helped me a LOT. Great ideas. For many years, I have been using a frame (ATC size) to pick out background images and then embellish them.

Hey Marisa.....the frames are SO easy to make, use your punches or dies to cut the frames out even faster! I have several sizes and types (circles, squares, oblong) by my side when I'm going through my magazines. Hi Angelica.....sure, happy to help. Here are the sizes of frames that I use regularly. The measurements I am giving you are of the "viewing" area, so you'll want to add a border to that measurement. 3.5" x 5"; 3" circle; 3/4" x 6" (to simulate washi tape); 2.5" x 2.5". Those are the ones I use most frequently to view images. Hope that helps. Joanne

Hi! Oh my gosh...I just discovered you on YT....I am binge watching all your videos!! I would love to do this and I have, a bit...I just can't seem to stick to it. I always think "my life is just not that exciting to journal!" But you always seem to come up with stuff...what is your secret? Also, I have watched several of your videos that show all the "stuff" you use. I would be interested to see your storage and organization of all of it. WOW...such a sweet and awesome message - thank you so much. You really made my day. I know what you mean about your life not being that exciting...I used to think the same thing. Daily journaling really made me shy away from consistently working in a journal. I like working on a week at a time and honestly, much of my journal entries are about current events, memories I have about something, funny things that happen, a song that triggers a memory - things like that. I work full time, but I try not to journal about work....every once in a while it creeps in, but for the most part, I just want it to be about my life outside of work. I plan on showing my storage system in my November flip (in about a week). I hope you'll come back and watch that video. When I actually sit down to journal, I've already been thinking about what I want to write and I start thinking about the best way to represent that thought. Sometimes the images themselves drive my journaling. I keep my graphics by category, so it's fairly easy to find what I'm looking for - at least most of the time. It's seeing standard images of my stamps for not what they are, but what they could be, that I'm having difficulty with. Seeing with new eyes and getting over that creative hump. I like your view-finders -- maybe they might help even with food packaging (where I get some of my letters, besides doodles, stamps and stickers).
Hi Dolores - YES, the frames can really help you to see things and they are so easy to make. I read about why you don't like to cut older things and I totally understand that...but when I say magazines, I'm talking about current magazines, the ones you can get everywhere. Real Simple, Martha Stuart Living and Oprah all have some great images. Our local library sells magazines for 25 cents and sometimes they have them for free.
Yes, but some day those current magazines will be the older magazines. smile!

Hi Nanci.....nothing really special with making the frames....they are very easy to make. I used index cards and just cut a square out of the middle using a craft knife. No measurements needed.....make several different sizes. If you have any large punches, you could use those too. Very, very simple. Hope that helps. xoxo Joanne

Do you cut out the images right away or do you cut out the page and sort them? I started to cut them out and now I have a pile of words and images but they aren't sorted in any way just thrown in a pile in my draw.
mom2triplets04 SO happy you found this video helpful. It's amazing what you can do with magazine images when you look at them differently. I rip and sort as I go, then I try to file them by category once a week. Otherwise that pile can get big! Words and phrases I generally store by the size if the font...so really big, tall words are sorted separately from small fonts and small phrases. That works for new, but you'll find what works best for you. If you have any questions, just ask.....joanne

Love the frames tip. How do you store your images?
Hi Lidima.....I use the frames all of the time because they are so helpful, so I am super happy you found that helpful. I store my images a couple of different ways....when it's full pages, I store by categories, I've found about 10 different ways categories that work for me and I keep the full pages in file folders. When I've cut them out already, but haven't used them, I store them in an upright vertical file folder that holds about 6 file folders that are nicely filled. Again stored by categories. Phrases are stored in a binder by large, medium and small. Hope that helps...I really should do a video on image storage - I think that might be helpful. Do you first journal and then go through the mag to find an image or do you collect images because they're great and then journal and take something ready cut? I hope you understand my question... because... I have a lot of magazines and can't store more... and have to do something...
Oh I definitely understand your question - I have lots of magazines too!! I go through my magazines on a regular basis and pull images/phrases/backgrounds out that I like. ANYTHING that causes me to pause will generally get ripped out of the magazine. I store my images in file folders by categories. When I'm looking for inspiration, I'll go through my files OR if I'm journaling and need an image, I'll look through them. Hope that helps! Joanne

I have been shying away from the shiny thin pages of magazines because no matter how much I flatten it out, I still get these little ripples when dry, and it looks awful. CC's Creations. Hi CC! I use a glue stick, either Elmer's or Uhu, but mostly Elmer's Purple glue stick. They are very cost effective and can be bought in packs of 6 and 12' especially during back to school. I find if I put an even coat down ( which is why I like the purple because I can see it) and smooth out with a soft cloth, I have no wrinkling or problems with lifting. You have to use a sufficient of glue, but not globs. Honestly the key is really burnishing the image down with the soft cloth. When burnishing, start in the center of the image and smooth outward. Once the image is down, spend a few seconds, focusing on the edges. I think that will help solve your wrinkling problem. I put hundreds of images down with little issue. Hope that helps. TFW. Joanne

Patience and practice help too - LOL. I have a difficult time using an exacto knife, but if you're good at using one it would work well too. Bargain magazines are so fun to find and use, right?! Hi Vicki! Using them is the key - because they can accumulate rather quickly! I keep my images, by category, in a stand-up file on my desk. Prepared images (all cut and ready to go) are in file folders and I go through them when I'm journaling. Additionally, torn out pages are kept in file folders in a drawer separated by the same categories. For me, the key is to go through my images regularly and purge any that I just don't think I will use....and really keep the images front and center so I'll use them. Hope that helps. What did you make the frames out of??

Oh they are super simple....decide how big you want your viewing area...for example my washi tape template has a viewing window of 1" x 6" and I add a 1" border all the way around the opening so I have something to hang onto. My square piece has a viewing window of 2.5" and add an inch all the way around. The rectangle measures 3.5" x 5" with an additional inch all the way around the window. Just decide the size you want and go from there. See...super simple. Let me know if you need more detail. Joanne
