That looks great! We are redoing our north facing bed near our garage and currently it is in the total shade in the winter but I’m afraid it’s getting more sun in the summer than I remember. Have not bought shrubs yet so thank you for this video! I need to rethink my game plan.
Hey, Karen! I’m so glad you found it helpful! I was so out of touch with that side of the house, and didn’t realize the sun it actually got! 😜 it’s tricky isn’t it? Think about some lomandra (sp?) breeze grass (sun or shade I believe!) paired with something else that can take sun or shade.
House looks great! Nothing better than a pristine backdrop for a new garden. Another new shrub I’ve never heard of! This is why I appreciate your videos!
Thank you!!! I’ve been wanting to put my personal touch on this house for 15 years! 😛 I’ve been so excited! I’m so glad you’re liking the videos and getting to see some different plants, and I enjoy yours for that reason too. I totally got what you meant about the cottage garden “bust”. When you have a vision and it doesn’t do what you’d hoped and it’s just a bummer. But to everyone but the gardener it’s beautiful! I totally get that though- case and point- my SUNBURNED hydrangeas and autumn fern! 😂
Your design looks very nice as does the new paint. I've never heard of Emerald Snow Loropetalum, how pretty it is with the different colored foliage. Can't wait to see where you put the plants you took out and the finished bed.
This looks so, so good! Love the idea of it being green and white, and playing off your white home. Please continue to show it to us as the shrubs are in full bloom.
Nice work! I had to move my hydrangeas from the north side of my house too. I planted them in the east side of the house, but now they’re not getting enough sun because of the big oak trees on that side.😩 I love the new planting!
Oh gosh Dawn! Then you know exactly my dilemma!!! I was so bummed when I saw the sunburn on them, because it all looked so good at first! 😩 I had to thin out my oak because grass underneath is dying, I wonder if that would help??
Getting ready to redo my North side backyard the Arctic blast last year did it in and it is 22 years old also. Like the Boxwood and MonkeyGrass have it in the front south and most of all the Hydrangea. Love the Loropetalum but in 6b so not for sure if it will go here and have not seen it in the greenhouses either. Can not wait to see the Part 2 next. Stay safe and garden on till the next time
Hey Ginger! Thank you!! I am sorry about your losing plants in the arctic blast, that’s a shame, but I know you’ll build a beautiful garden again where you lost things. Thanks for commenting I am so glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Very nice! You work so hard and without sweating in the hot, humid south. What's your secret? Be careful of your loripe. In my area, it becomes close to an invasive nature. Loving the lorapetulum! I've looked for that variety all summer with no avail. Your landscaping budget seems endless.😉
Hi Debbie! Oh gosh, I guess it’s good that it doesn’t look like I sweat but oh I do!!! I am usually dripping but I guess the camera doesn’t much show it! ☺️ and yes, someone said that liriope is invasive which I didn’t know because this is my first time planting liriope. I have gotten a lot of my plants at a local wholesale nursery and save a lot of money that way, and then I do try to be careful not to spend too much. I put in lots of “evergreen” plants, because my hope was I would be able to stop buying so many annuals each year...so I guess I’m spending money to eventually save.
That's so pretty!!! It's really going to look stunning against the new house color!! I have so many things I need to do in the garden. It went from rain to extreme heat!!!
Ok ok!! At the beginning of the video where you open the gate …. and are greeted by the path and that gorgeous landscape…. That’s what I want!! I love how you share your trials and tribulations! Beautiful lessons passed down to other gardeners. Thank you! Love the house paint color. Your landscaping is going to pop against it! (You KNOW I’m all about the little lime 😝) That’s gonna look beautiful. Great job!
I was making this vid when you were telling me about your little limes!!! 😝 LOVE them! And thanks Beth Ann, YES I’m all about being REAL. No perfect gardeners allowed! 🤗 I do love the white paint, it’s very simple, and clean. Oh and you can totally have that same look as you come into your garden with the height on both sides. I wanted to feel closed in with plants 🌱🙌🏻
@@mysoutherngarden oh yes, your suggestion of the planter on the right is just so spot on. I think it’ll help make that entry more cozy, but further, since that’s a “service patio” (it’s where the grill and smoker 😝) it’ll help block all that “messy” and keep your eye forward on the landscape. Also interested in a few things you mentioned in this video… that area gets full sun most of the day. Loropetalum… that might be a perfect fit with the Little Limes in front of the Nellies! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the white! Super excited about that
Love it!! I have lorapetulum (spelling??😂) everywhere and I love it. You will really enjoy them and they look perfect in your north facing bed. Everything looks great - And love the white paint!! So excited you posted a new video. I stalk your channel every day hoping for a new video! Lol! Looking forward to seeing everything you do in your garden.
Love it!!! I can’t get monkey grass to grow in sun here in Trussville AL. I need those emerald snows. Those are gorgeous! Never seen those here. Beautiful as usual. And again, the white on the house looks great!!! 😎
Hey Tracy! We will see how the grass does here in Dothan, I may have the same problem as you! Oh yes the emerald snows are SOO PRETTY! Love them and thank you so much ☺️😘
I’m afraid the audio during the “music” portion of the video was distracting. What did you think? Was it distracting to you? Sometimes my editing is not on point but next time I’ll make sure it’s better!!
@@mysoutherngarden I liked the music. It sets the mood and it gives a somewhat professionally produced quality to the over all video. Perhaps the music track could have been pushed back a little bit more in the mix, (live and learn). But then again maybe we're just be splitting hairs here. After all, it's not like she's trying to make a hit record here.
Thank you Mark! I had watched the video back and realized that the audio wasn’t great- the volume was too low And it went up and down. I was bummed because I always want the videos to be enjoyable for y’all! Thank you for your kind response, it really made me feel better. I hope that I’ll continue to get better with the editing in the future🙏🏻☺️ y’all are awesome!!!
Looks really nice. Do you add top soil , potting soil, whatever you have on hand to amend the soil when you dig holes for planting? Just wanted to know your readon. My front bed is terrible clay soil.
Yes, Carol that’s exactly what I do. I already put in some Black Kow manure when I created this bed, so when I plant, I use top and garden soil mostly. Potting soil is more pricey so I tend not to want to use it in beds, but I do sometimes if it’s all I have 😛
I like the combination of plants you chose for the "north bed." I struggle with how many plants to put in a flower bed so that it is not overwhelmed with plants, but also that it doesn't look sparse. I stagger the plants and try not to have them in a straight row. I also try to have plants of various heights and widths. Any other suggestions?
Hey, Ann! I think you’re doing great from what you’re saying. You can have too much. So it’s good to have that in mind! Staggering, and using odd numbers, at 45 degree angles is a great design principle, also having the taller in back, and progressively getting smaller in the front- and also using less colors in one bed but using fewer colors that echo each other. The only blooms I have in the North bed now, are white, with the lavender bloom on the liriope, which I think adds that pop of color but also keeps it simple and understated. If there’s too many colors that aren’t related, it can seem restless rather than calming to the eye.
@@mysoutherngarden Thank you for your suggestions. I have the loropetalum with red leaves, small Japanese hollies, hosta, and one camellia in the center. They are spaced out - just thinking about adding small ferns that won't overtake the space. I had to transplant the autumn ferns as they grew to an enormous height and width. Thank you, again! I have taken a picture of the bed and will take that to the garden center the next time I go.
