Boy, does this video bring back many fond memories! A friend and I used to railfan exactly this area - and McCloud - in the early 1990s. Unforgettable the whine of dynamics coming downgrade, and the chugging of tunnel motors in run 8 heading up to Sawmill curve. Love that you captured a Kodachrome too! I have a gazillion photos, but sadly no videos - my partner took those and both him and the videos are long gone.
I love this place and would give anything to have been there during that time. Classic SP and such a beautiful SP history here. Would have been a fun place to work in the day.
Chuck Halen Very true, The steam days were the golden age for the Shasta division, there were 1500 workers employed then. It was a happening place back then. The 70’s till the end was the EMD era and definitely was unique on the SP. Long live the Southern Pacific in memory.

Wow!! Brings back memories. It’s weird not seeing graffiti on the cars. I miss the old days of the SP.
Awesome, I know, I would hate to model in today’s era, I watch trains today and am totally disgusted with all the mess on the cars
