Excellent data. I just picked up some new 22mag Ammo yesterday. Same as your tests.
I’ve been wanting a Hornet in 22 and 17. I think it’s about time I got on that! Thanks for sharing!

Good vid. But if you are now confused about which calibre to buy, its an easy choice.
    1 of each!

22 hornet back when they built 22 magnums right the first time.

I always preferred the .22 Hornet K when it came out. It's a .22 Hornet with a shouldered case, like a mini .222, that extends case life exponentially for reloaders. A rifle chambered for .22 Hornet K can also shoot regular .22 Hornet with no problems, so you also expand your options. .22 Hornet K is also a slightly longer case, allowing you to squeeze in an extra 6 to 6½ grains of powder allowing for more loading options and taking a "good enough" grouping rifle to the next level of accuracy by tightening up your groups.

Very interesting. Thanks. I got a Blaser K95 in 22 hornet and an Anschutz 1771 in 17 hornet. Lovely calibers both of them with different usage for me. The latter is purely for varmint while the 22 is used if I plan to eat what I shoot at.

I have my great great grandfather's Winchester model 70 22 hornet. One day I hope to pass it on down to my daughter.

have seen a clip on modified chamber for the .22 hornet, Aussie video, where they change the chamber profile substantially, which allows the used cases in the new chamber shapr to accommodate either more powder or projectile perhaps both, called the hornet .22 K
    be interesting to evaluate ?

Nice video. Interesting results. I love the .17's. I've got the 17HMR, 17WSM, and the 17 Hornet. I want to get my Hornet out after coyotes this winter yet.

One of, if not the best, .22 mag, .22 hornet .17 hornet comparison video and info, under 20 minutes I've seen. That .17 hornet sure put a BIG hurting on that steel target, how thick was that target anyway, it looked like 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick ? I wonder how far out an accurate shot, say 2 inch groupings or smaller, could be made with the .17 Hornet. I'd love to see what the bullet drop, fps and impact ft lbs. specs would be, for what I'd call an extreme distances, say 1/4 mile ( 1320 ft ) shot and a 1/2 mile ( 2640 ft ) shot. And of course the firearm specs that made the shots along wind and weather conditions. Long shots always like those have always astonished me.

I still don't know why hornady don't load their own 40 grain vmax, it has double the B.C of the 35 grain so you get more energy after about 60 or 70 yards

I've always heard the 17 HMR was a fast bullet, but dang! That dent in the back of the plate from the 25 grain was impressive.
I've been shooting 22 Hornet and 22 LR for years. Guess it's time to find room in the safe for a 17 Cal Rifle.

Used 35 grain Winchester super x in my 22 hornet. The case head sperated from the rest of the casing and then locked the bolt closed. Happened twice out of roughly 60 shots. Any ideas? Thanks

Great video, man. The PPU load for me is an avg of 2600fps (2550-2650fps), so you're right in there. The Hornady Custom, loaded with 45gr 'Hornet' bullet with an avg velocity of 2650 (verified) with a B.C. of .202 will out energy any of these loads. And did I say how accurate they are? They are one holers...and there not even that pricey! If you don't wanna fool with handloading, that is an excellent load.
The 22 Hornet really shines with handloading and even outdoes the 17 Hornet in this context. 3050fps from a 40gr VMAX in the 22H just about beats anything in 17HH, especially at extended ranges. That's a 40gr 22 cal moving faster than a 30gr 17 cal.
Let's not even get into the 22 K-Hornet. Same 40gr VMAX now at 3200fps easy. 22KH loads usually reach or exceed 900ft/lbs at the muzzle. I'm getting my 0.25MOA CZ527 reamed out to K-Hornet as we speak!

Very informative. Going to purchase a savage Model 25 walking varminter in 22 Hornet this week. A caliber my grandfather loved to use shooting small game in NY state long time back. Also picking up the ruger american in 22 LR and 22 WMR calibers as well for plinking. We have a horrible ground squirrel problem hear on our ranch in Valley Springs, CA. Was thinking of sticking with the 22 WMR in stead of the 22 hornet, but liked what you demonstrated on the hornet rounds. So truth be told getting the hornet for sentimental reasoning. My wife wanted me to get a Ruger 10/22 instead of the bolt action. Will I see a great decrease in performance due to semi-auto. I know the shorter barrel will effect the velocity, just wondering if the semi-auto action combination with the short barrel would make a difference at 100 yards.

Besides destroying a soft steel target what did all this prove that couldn't be gleaned from published ballistics? After all most shooters understand the effects of high velocity on soft steel.
