Calf trapped on small island of rising river near Creston B.C. Locals attempt rescue but little moose decides to attempt crossing back to shore on its own. No mother insight. Will keep an eye out for her .
This was uploaded by a friend, I will give you an update as the resident. The Girl hugging the calf is my wife. We called the local Conservation Officer who told us the probable story behind the abandonment. The cow probably gave birth near the river. Shortly after she decided to cross the river expecting her calf to follow which he did. The cow had no problem crossing the river, the calf got swept away and ended up on the gravel bar (maybe miles downstream). The Cow would have waited for the calf for an hour or so and left. Moose are not noted for their intelligence. Whether or not rescuing a wild animal is a good idea or not is debatable. This calf would not have survived without its mother. We were not sure what its future would be after the rescue. The conservation officer said there was a lady about an hour away who cares for rescued animals whether rescued by citizens or authorities. We took the moose to her. She raise the moose until the fall and then the Fish and Wildlife/Conservation officer release the animal back into the wild. We should have taken pictures of it riding in the back seat of my wife's Hyundai. I sat with it. When we first put it in , it would not stop peeing!

Baby moose weigh approx. 30 lbs, 15 lbs if twins, but grow fast. This lady carried him without much trouble. She must be used to hefting bales. Glad he got good care and release to the wild when grown.
It was adorable but hope she didn't keep it because it would grow huge especially if a male but even a female adult moose would be very large. Eventually they'd end up having to let it go and it might not be able to look after itself. I hope they reunited it with its mom.

Most do not know moose tramplelings kill several people a year. As much as i too want to help it..a pissed off mother will charge. If i were in this situation my head would be on a swivel like a owl!

Moose are born around 100Lbs. If she can carry him, he lost his mother and WILL die on his own.
