A previous commenter stated how he'd like this narrator to read his eulogy at their funeral, and I really can't explain how perfect I've found that idea......
In Jamaica I went to the museum once and they had this iron cage in a human form. It wasnt completely enclosed it was like bands of iron wrapped around the head and torso with spikes on the inside. They said it was used to torture enslaved Africans who had been caught after running away. This reminded me of that. Humans have been so awful to each other over the course of history.
The sad fact is that people were, and still are, tortured, and sometimes tortured to death. But this does not require any kind of specialized equipment. If you have someone captive and rendered helpless, any object, including the torturer’s hands and feet, can be a torture device.
Hands and feet are boring. A good device is supergluing tacks, bent paper clips or glass to the end of a massage gun. A hammer does a lot of damage too. You can do a lot with vinegar, salt and sandpaper (and enough sedatives) that regular hands and feet are just... Not enough.
I remember seeing these "Iron Maiden" torture devices in several medieval torture museums throughout tourist cities in the US as a teen. One museum had a disclaimer on a plaque out in front of the device saying that no one is certain they were ever actually used. This adds clarity to that. Great video!

My Battalion (2/162 Infantry) was quartered in the Iraqi Olympic Training complex during OIF II in '04. Across from Saddam's prize basketball gymnasium in central Baghdad. That's no joke about the torture implements. The room that became my hooch had a bare bedframe with a car battery charger wired up to it, and there were bullet holes and blood stains along the walls in the rooms, and eye hooks bolted in. For chaining people up.
Interesting critical analysis of the historical existence of the Iron Maiden. It reminds me of an article I read years back arguing that there were no actual Medieval ball and chain maces, but rather they were the products of artistic license, mostly from Victorian Era writers and artists.
7:56 for starters, remember Terminator Arnie's biker spiked jacket. Then there's the case of that depraved & obscene monster known as ''The Beast Of Jersey'', a serial rapist & child-rapist who wore a hideous mask, & a spiked coat with spiked wrist-bracelets so that his victims couldn't fight him off. This monster terrorized the beautiful Jersey Island from 1957 to 1971 when he was arrested. Perhaps it's only me, but I find a strong similarity between the Beast of Jersey & pre-Nightmare Freddy.
You would have to be a real trooper to survive the iron maiden. The evil that men do lives on and on, but if you're going to die, die with your boots on. You wouldn't be running free any longer, as you need to be quick or be dead because only the good die young. What a strange world in which killers use a flash of the blade and exploit a fear of the dark. And btw, don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years!! If you understand that, UP THE IRONS!!🤘 Also, great video Weird History!
I feel like if the people of the medieval times knew of these, they would have perpetrated the myth just in hopes that the people having fear of them, would deter people from doing what would bring punishment from the device.
That makes no sense, since there were real devices way more cruel that this one. And people weren't being punished for specific "crimes", one could get a betting while other could be killed on the spot. for doing the same thing, given that the peasents were mainly slaves and own their lives to the lord of the land.
I was really hoping there would a few Iron Maiden references, you didn't disappoint. Greatest band of all time ever! Their new album Senjutsu is the best! Check out the video for The Writing on the Wall. See if you can decipher the meaning. It's very relevant to today, and uses the book of Daniel to tell the story.
Thats it im going to binge all album, even book of souls and the final frontier that i didnt heard as much as the others, then give the newest album a try only heard the demo for now!
I remember seeing a coffin-like box in a museum in Hobart, Australia in which an incarcerated person was supposed to stand for however long they were sentenced to, with the idea that they would think about their behaviour and that would bring on change - it was used at a time when solitary confinement for such purposes (one of the ideas behind Port Arthur penal colony) was a thing'. All it tended to do was destroy people mentally. I wonder if the myth iron maiden was inspired from that and then physical pain added for the sake of gruesomeness.
Thank you for covering this topic, you're quite the trooper there! 🤪 Iirc there was an earlier version of the iron maiden that was basically a wooden statue of a woman that had spiked arms which would 'embrace' the victim, which was where the 'maiden' came from.
Excuse me. You telling me, the Hungarians just punished Elizabeth Bathory for nothing in the 16th century? And you refer for other devices that are similar to the description of Iron Maiden, but not called Iron Maiden. Maybe, because it was on different languages but the concept was just as same.

I have that book, Curious Punishments of Bygone Days, and it is full of interesting stories. Stocks, Pillories, whipping at the cart’s tail, wooden horse, and ‘ducking’. Also, a chapter on ‘bilboes’, yes that is with a ‘b’. These are essentially metal stocks. Good stuff
