i cant be the only one to be like: yay, Matt has uploaded a new video--> watches it immediately after work--> falls asleep after 20 minutes--> wakes up at the end--> has to rewind and watch it again
Yep, that's how it be, but It's just as good the second time round.
This ain't no VHS tape that ya rented from your local BlockBuster, Hollywood Video, or Movie Gallery, that had the sticker on it sayin' ,"Please be kind & Rewind"...Those days are gone, my friend!! Just messin' with ya. Have a great day. 👍👍
Funny. I awoke up too and was like, why did he do all that work and not push the branches DOWNHILL? Hope its minor, and look forward to the D8 purring along...
I'm excited for this
I do this all the time
I have a funny story for today's video! I was sitting at Denny's about to eat my breakfast, and I had my tablet with me. I was about to throw my headphones in and turn on your video, when an old trucker guy tapped me on the shoulder and asked "Hey! Is that Diesel Creek?" I told him yeah it was, and he asked "You mind if I watch it with you?" I scootched over so he could move his breakfast over to my table, and propped up my tablet to watch. After the video was done, we polished off our coffee and chatted a bit, then he got up and paid for my breakfast without me knowing lol. So, the moral of this story: Thanks Matt! For the video and the free breakfast! 🥞🥞🥞
It also teaches people to be polite and friendly to everyone! 😂
I’m happy hearing that and you’re a good neighbor as well.
Thanks for showing us and I love to watch. I am 84 years old and when I was 15 and 16 I worked with Allis Chambers at the Fair in Knoxville, TN for 3 weeks using and learning about their large EQUIP and showing others all about it. All that was fun and a great experience for me getting my life started off in the right direction, and learning how to work hard. Before I had always worked all the time with my Dad, and knew how to assist on the job. today in 1.11.24. All be safe.
Am a D8 operator here in Nigeria I would love to work with u in your country
@@user-gc7jm9tv9b Hey, do you guys watch Itchy Boots over there?
Greetings from Germany! That must be a tough Job to operate a D8 in your country.Given the muddy mess that happens during Rainy Season. I did not know about how cracy that destructs all roadwork, until I watched Itchy Boots traveling..
one of my favorite parts about how you restore your equipment is how you use other restored equipment to help do the big restorations
Turbo bolts would've been a good rest for kroil. I bought some, boy that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!!
All heavy equipment should come with a Cresent wrench.Stay safe Matt.
My Dad had a punch that came with a WAYNE CRANE!!! It is still in his tool box. I will have to get a picture of it.
And a pair of Vise Grips
Swedish nut lathe …. Lol
@@jerryhogate3640
Vise grips are nothing more than a crescent wrench with a bad attitude 😆
@Landon-si5xc Get a life .I don't even like Goats
ADS went above and beyond for the turbo! That is worth a watch!
Thanks for watching!
I've never paused a 1-hour video 9 minutes in, to watch a supplemental 2-hour video about a component repair, to then return to the starting video. Those ADS folks are true artisans. I'm glad it's the weekend. 😃
Heh. I did the exact same thing. It made for an exciting evening of viewing. 👍
Sometimes, like now, I rewatch these vids just to hear the theme music by the SSV's again. It just cheers me up, gives me hope and says everything is going to be fine. I ABSOLUTELY love it.
Glad you enjoy the music!
Crescent wrenches, a good set of pliers, a good set of vise grips, a hammer, and profanity are my favorite tools. Sometimes just cussing at the thing puts the fear of God in it and it gives up and comes loose... Yeah that never happens but it's better than me throwing the wrench! Keep up the great work man.
I would say that Wright makes some really great tools.
My grandfather said a crescent. pliers . hammer. and bailing wire he could fix any tractor
Hey Matt, I am 80 I have worked on cars & trucks most of my life, I couldn't have done it without the Cresent wrench. Keep on doing what you love & I will keep on enjoying you at work!!!
😂
It’s nice seeing people restoring old iron and appreciating the machines that built the world back in the good old days
I agree. Personally, I prefer the old iron because there are no electronics to fail.
American Iron . We should still be building . Not importing .
I mean I think I (and a whole lot of other people) wouldn’t consider the height of the Vietnam war and Segregation “The good ole days”…….

Great to see the beast finally pushing stuff around 😊
The precision with which you guided the blade pins into their receivers was impressive. Fine motor control with inherently coarse machinery. Nice.
It warms my heart whenever I see a youtuber using a oxy acetylene torch.
Matt have you ever thought of a hot diesel fuel flush of the oils system? This is what the local Alice Chalmers dealership would do on the old tractors that has set in barns for years in a non running condition.
They would drain the oil, and install a fitting on the oil plug and a hose with a shut off valve, and had a tank of about 25 gallons of Diesel fuel with with a oil flush additive, and they would heat the diesel fuel to 200 degrees and fill the engine with the diesel fuel and circulate the cleaner for 1 hour, and then they would shut off the fill valve drain all the diesel back into the bulk storage tank for the engine flusher.
This was a shop built engine flusher which used 2 electric circulation pumps salvaged out of an old boiler system, and the heater was a steam heater that heated the diesel fuel.
When they disassemble an old engine to be rebuild the inside the engine was sludge free .
Mat you might want to build . Also the bulk tank has 2 or 3 sediment tanks that, so it was clean engine flush, for the most part.
That’s a good idea
@@DieselCreek You also can run the engine without the turbo to warm the oil before draining. All you have to do is cap the oil supply line to the turbo and fire it up.
Speaking of the turbo... "I guess it was pretty bad, from what I understand." Do ya think Matt? Haha nice; good call brother!
Nothing beats the sound of old diesel 1:01:48 wow what a melody...)
I just finished watching the repair job of the turbo and now I can just continue watching great content. That saved my rainy sunday.
I watched the restoration too, that was so fascinating. "these parts are unobtanium" and they just had the old hardware sat in their inventory. it was so cool!
I watched part of the turbo rebuild last night.
Watched it yesterday. It was very interesting. I was surprised with the final repair price given what they had to do to get it back in working order.
Hi Matt
16:20
Great video, well done!
Loved the Area Diesel video too :) Those guys are incredible.
I don’t understand why the new flange adaptor only has two holes, when the original had 4. Or did I miss something?
Cheers
Ray UK
@@aeros4meArea Diesel said that they had missed it. And Matt would be able to get it done ✅ but he missed it also 🤣
Now thats what i call a great company that takes the time to add small details on the turbo 👍😁
@@Landon-si5xc nah i belive in the good lord Monkey Wrench and sticky greese.

I love when you rescue old iron from the auction, service it, run it, then either keep it or send it on. The world needs more guys like you. Keep up the good work.
Luv that hot wrench and the way he uses it
What a crew to support Matt @ "Diesel Creek" I re-watched, I am impressed to the Max ! ! ! Anthony Ash
ADS is really great people ..and they quickly get your gear back to you..the id tag is just the small details but they always try to make it a personal job ..one of the many reasons i like ADS..not to mention they never fail to fix the broken bits.
We do our best every day! Thanks for the kind words.
Sunday is my only day off in the week. It’s an absolute treat to wake up and watch your stuff first thing with a hot coffee before the critters need feeding. Thanks Matt.
PS why the heck Shell doesn’t sponsor you I’ll never understand.
They do….. lol
@@DieselCreek oops 😅 guess the coffee hadn’t kicked in yet. Oh well. That’s good to hear 👍 keep up the good work.
@DieselCreek great stuff Matt.
@DieselCreek - Sponsored? Ha! I was wondering why "when in doubt, you ALWAYS drain it out", when others might try to get a few more miles out of the oil. I admit your recommendations are effective, because Shell Rotella with zinc will be the first oil I will look at for my meager vintage autos when i retire and have enough time to resurrect them.😂
@@DieselCreek would be good to just state that in the video then
Man, i tell you what. That thing can move. Honestly i was nervous when you started back up to that hill. I was waiting for the front end to come up or for it to start sliding down the hill.
You get a helluva workout driving that thing. All those friggin levers keep you constantly moving.
Matt, You took me back to when I was a kid in high school in the mid 70’s watching you drive your D8. I was a laborer working for a small construction company out of Wamego KS during my summers operating a (-] backhoe meaning a shovel 😉😉😉 doing my part putting in the drainage pipe for a large number of farm ponds. The company I worked for had a D8 that I’d get a chance to see operating every now and then while I working and I always envied the driver with all that power in his hands in that giant machine and the sound of that diesel and turbo were awe inspiring... Thanks for your efforts of bring old machines back to life and taking old guys like me back to our younger days. I’m now a retired pharmacist but I remember those days working in the dirt with fond memories...
I appreciate your attitude!! No matter what, you don't get down & show aggravation!! You just keep trying!! God bless you!! Thanks for a great channel!! 👍❤️👍
I appreciate that
@@DieselCreek Matt you have got to move that seat back up. I mean that just looks completely uncomfortable!!! Just saying. P.S. I have finished the video yet... I usually comment like that so if you ever see my comments then please that that into account. Plus I Love your videos Man.
I think the angriest we've seen Matt get was the brush mower videos. All the loose hardware and no oil in the gearbox got him a little heated.
@@superdrummergaming hahahha yeah I remember that... Wow was my reaction...
This channel is a great way to learn about a varity of machines.
You pulled out the box with the serviced turbo and I immediately thought "I wonder how they did that". Then you said link to their video in the description... Awesome!
Nothing like Sunday with Matt!!
The look on your face when she started up was priceless. Pure joy. Your love for these old machines really shows. Thanks for the entertaining video.
I would wear a FFP2 mask if I were him though. Those old gaskets may well be asbestos...
My first ever 'dozer was a 1955 D8H with a donkey engine start (that's what we call 'em this side of the pond) manual transmission, cable operated blade and winch, full cab the size of a small house and would push a mountain over. Happy Daze!
The custom Plate at area Diesel Service Made and installed on the Turbo Is Just awesome What a Amazing Touch to that repaired Turbo Matt 😮 10:31 @Diesel Creek
I hope to see Matt at National Pike next Saturday or Sunday.
Keep an eye on your new turbo bolts. Cat uses special (and expensive) high temp bolts for that application because regular bolts expand and contract too much and can either become loose or snap.
All we ever used at the shop was CAT grade 8 bolts and nuts ! But yes if you Ofer special they are a little lighter in color from the regular bolts & nuts !
omg
"If only I had an overhead crane"! Lol.
Look out, he's going "TURBO!"
lazy Sunday afternoon in a very wet part of UK just got better with a DC vid. Great Mat, thanks
The old beast springs to life and is ready to plow some dirt! Glad to see it running again!
Haha! Funny quote from BackyardAlaskan came to mind while watching your video: "In Alaska, everything is a hammer...except a screwdriver; a screwdriver is a chisel!" I enjoy watching you work on old equipment. There are few things in this world that give me more warm-fuzzies than taking a good old piece of machinery and bringing it back to working condition.
Really would have liked to see you vacuum out the intake manifold after seeing the gasket debris & rust drop in as you removed it Matt.
Stuff a rag in the intake manifold before scraping and please wear rubber gloves when dealing with old oil - that stuff is toxic
It was the Exhaust manifold gasket.
@@hiscifi2986 The exhaust is what spins up the turbo. It still passes through even though it doesn't enter the engine.
My Grandfather retired as a Oiler at the company that owned that Cat D8 i don't know what Grandfather did in his early years in that company i just think it's to see a piece of equipment he may have ran & keep running on your video
Thanks for the great content Matt

Damnnnn that turbo sounds friggin awesomeeeee.
Dad Gum! That tractor sounds great, I mean, to led a hard life it probably has!
Later all I could think was "DON'T BACK OVER THE OUTHOUSE!!!!"
Well, it was soundin' and runnin' rather well for a little while anyway.
I have a lot of fond memories about the D8. My dad was a service manager for a CAT dealer and got to run this when I was 14. In the mid 60's I was able to help with cleaning land for new lake with instruction not to worry about small to mid size trees.
My Grandfather had one he used to knock down trees to enlarge his fields. It sat more than it was used, so us grandkids played on it a lot. But what was left of the paint on it was red, for some reason.
Great job. I enjoy watching each and every video. Being old and not able to do much, it give me pleasure to watch a young man with all your drive. Thank you from a very old man. Thanks again. Will wait for your next video.
Dear Diesel Creek. I was 7 years old in 1964. So, I was then playing with sandbox toys when that sturdy D8 was built. You sir have a big kids' dream machine. So glad to see it running. I imagine the fuel pickup got another slug of yuck. Recommend siphon off anything at the bottom of the fuel tank. Mud or water perhaps moved around when on the hillside. Enjoy that big boy's toy. Wish I could see it sometime. Thanks for sharing. David.
Matt, have you ever thought of getting a plasma cutter? You could cut the bolts off so much faster and cleaner. You could get one for about 40 bucks
The world might have not been the best back in the old times but they made their machines pretty and good
they were too busy building the world and machines to worry about peoples opinons or who sleeps with who.
World has fallen apart and now most of the machines suck.😢
How was “the world” worse in 1964 than it is now? That’s an insane belief.
@@matthewtaylor3308that was right around when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened so there was the looming threat of WWIII breaking out
@@matthewtaylor3308 I'd LOVE to see you go from now to 1964. Sure, your political beliefs may be a bit more popular, and some stuff may be a bit cheaper (keep in mind you'd be earning 10 times less as well, and probably even less than that), but you'd also lose ALL creature comforts. I find it impossible to believe that anyone would ACTUALLY like to go back in time 50 years. For a few days to experience it, sure, but to live in permanently? Absolutely not.
Good morning from Vancouver BC, Matt. I watched the first half of Area Diesel's video. Thanks to Curtis for posting this thorough video and the problems encountered rebuilding a old D8 turbo. It was lucky they had another core or it would have been very disappointing results. Especially, the housing on yours was corroded thin around the head entrance meaning the scrap bin. I think you are the first guy to undertake such a project on TH-cam. That Machine appears to be in pretty good shape, which in itself is rare.
You scared the crap out of me when you backed it off the cliff!
Nice camera work out in the yard, was fun to watch!
I just watched the turbo rebuild on area diesel's channel! Expensive process, but seem like honest people and they do good work. Actually refreshing to see a company put prices out there like that, very helpful for the rest of us. Can't wait to see how the doser turns out!
Thanks for watching!
To pick up a 45 gallon drum with forks, set your forks just wide enough to go outside the drum raise up to the rim. The rim holds the drum.
Yah…. Not this wore out old forklift lol
How pi’s the crane project progressing 😅

The happiness of Mat , when diesel started )))
Good job Matt, love your shop. Consider laying two runs of old conveyer belts down for your track equipment.
A general rule for acceptable oil pressure is 10psi for every 1000 rpm.
Love the railroad spike Peavy leaning against the tracks!!!!
Matt, you may not know it, but you are living the life, n my mind, it couldn't get any better. Here in the Poconos we have too many New York city folks. They have brought their rules with them so we can't have as much fun you have over there on the West side of PA
Whole dang state is sliding that way… if they shove me out I’m going west…. Way wayyy west
I could listen to that tubo all day it's like an old switzer
the packaging material is called INSTA-PACK. its a 2 part foam in place packaging material. fun stuff.
We do it with insulating foam cans - simple!
Those old CATERPILLARS are absolutely unstoppable beasts I gotta find me a massive old D9 for my construction business it reminds me of the killdozer movie 1974 I think came out, I remember seeing it on here. It plows into some type of radioactive rock or it kills the operator then it gets a complete mind of its own destroying the crews things and basically the whole crew on the island.
That original seat was fine Matt! Looked plenty comfy! xD
I've been following the rebuild of this old girl from the get-go. Loving it. Also watched ADS's turbo rebuild. I love this kind of stuff. I also loved the rebuild of your old 977L.
“If you’re all caught up on the series…” Yeah Matt, like we don’t all binge watch these as soon as we can. No, just me?
We really appreciate how down to earth you are
yes a cliff hanger! Probably a clogged fuel system as you said Matt. Looking forward to see what the issue was!
Great to see the Old Girl back up and going! I’m sure you’ll get her back up and running like she was. Thanks!!
The safety squint is strong in this one! LOL
We had that very same d8 cat in Vietnam 4 of them that were abused in the rock quarries. Seabees. We drained the oil on the ground. Made for nice blacktop after done a few times
My knees are now gone from jumping off heavy equipment. Both d8 and ts24 Euclid
Glad to see ur doing that restoration as it would never get done at my age of 77 also all our filters of the day were sock filters

At 29:59 was not expecting to laugh as hard as I did 🤣
Greetings from Central NH Lakes Region - I watched the Area Diesel Services rebuild of the turbo - that was awesome. Those guys are incredible. I went back and watched the video of that turbo being rebuilt.. It was very impressive. To me, the most impressive part was when the turbo was tore down, and they had a list of parts that they needed and they knew full well if they didn't have them, that turbo was unusable.
Next clip, shows him with a sticky note that had a location on it to where there were parts . Pulled down crate and WALA!! Not one but two turbos to salvage parts from! ( Insert Matt's signature laugh here)
The boxer Jack Johnson invented the crescent wrench. He was a race car enthusiast.
Absolutely awesome to see the Ole girl running and pushing again..I see where you get your passion and admiration for this old iron..I am right there with you. Always great wrenching and appreciate your sharing of knowledge and history of these old machines...looking forward to seeing what's next. Stay safe and keep cool😎🚜🛠️🇺🇸🔧🚛😇

Can't wait to next weekend for the steam show! Hopefully I'll see you this time.
So happy these historic machines get a new lease of life for the younger generations to see. Great content as always ❤
I would love to see an actual scientific test done to determine the "hot vs cold" oil back and forth. I have heard it argued both ways by two engine rebuilders hanging out in one of their shops after hours, both made excellent arguing points. The major take away, hot or cold depends on how long the engine has been sitting without running. An engine that has been sitting along ass time, just drain the oil cold because that is when the most amount of oil and sediment is at the bottom. It is always a factor of time and what you intend to do with the engine. A real old engine with an unknown change interval, change the oil and filter cold, run the new oil until it gets nice and hot then change the oil and filter a second time.
I was a Army Mechanic and the Cresent wrench was our friend.
That turbo is Massive omg 😮 91 pounds Yikes thats a big MammaJama There Matt 9:54 @Diesel Creek
You could always make your own extension to remove the drain plugs by using an old no.8 bolt with the same size head as the socket and then weld another nut on the other end of the threaded section. That way you don't have to worry about losing that nice old wrench or cramming it up into the belly pan and the handle getting in the way.
I'm not going to lie when your first backed up to the hill and started to go down the hill my heart sank. But the old girl walked right back up the hill. Matt I can not wait to see the videos for this beautiful machine.
I have to admit, I thought it would push a whole lot more than it seemed willing to actually push. Maybe I just envision that size of dozer pushing more than that amount of brush. It wasn't even dirt or rock.
Hi Matt, after watching the video on the loose track of your dozer, it reminded me when my grandfather’s bulldozer have a loose track also! What he did was the same thing that you tried on expanding the tract and it wouldn’t do it. So being an old man and living a farm I watched them fix this track, and what he did was a very simple solution. He removed one of the links in the track, put it back together and work just fine. Why can’t you do the same thing? I guess like my grandfather who did not have a lot of money but had a lot of common sense, and backyard know how he got the job done! Mind you this is just a thought I had which reminded me of when I was a child watching my grandfather.
D 8s are the class of the machines
Matt I was lucky to see the turbo rebuild by Area Diesel first before watching your video, it just all flowed together. Great work mate.
Enjoyed watching tour turbo be rebuilt
Thanks for watching!
I love that ADS recorded the repair and that you included the link. I feel more attached to the entire process now. I wish I had gotten into machines instead of computers and carpentry. I feel it's a bit late to start over, again, now in my late 40's. Now I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago a lot of the time, so learning is a buttload more difficult. 🤣
I'm sure you've inspired a few folks into pursuing getting into machines and repair. Keep on using those crescent wrenches, your use is pretty exactly what they were made for as you explained. Let the complainers complain. Thank you for breathing a bit of life back into old forgotten machines others gave up on. I find that really satisfying to do and watch. Cheers.
There could be some oil passages blocked or restricted. I would try an oil flush. We have a big Allis dozer that had this problem and the flush fixed it.

That was one fantastic video Curtis made on rebuilding the turbo. A phenomenal amount of work went into it. Hope your fuel problem isn't anything major or too time consuming.
