Navigation Plotting is an essential skill for working in the maritime industry. This video is an introduction to some of those concepts. If you've spent lots of time on the water, but have not pursued a professional license, you should consider yourself a candidate for an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) 6-Pack license. This license allows you to charter vessels with up to 6 paying passenger and is the first step to a career in the maritime industry, full-time or part-time!

This is a really an excellent tutorial on chart navigation. I love collecting maps (cartophile, if I may put it that way) and am passionate about manual navigation (using compass + maps for groun navigation) without the aid of an electronic positioning equipment (GPS). Though, I am not a professional or an amateur seafarer, still I wish to learn about this in more detail. Could you please tell me, where I can get the nautical map from, the one like in the video? Also, I would like to know from where one can get latest information on the ocean drifts for a particular location?
Thank you again for this excellent and lucid video presentation.

Try richardsonscharts.com. Not sure if you'll find what you are looking for but they may help. Caltopo.com is a free topographic map download site for land and they may do navigation charts/maps as well but not sure. Has to be free download sites for what you are looking for but...good luck!

  • @lyingcat9022

According to Bowditch the term Course Made Good (CMG) is a misnomer. More accurate term is Track Made Good.
I guess that makes sense since your CMG is always Zero unless your Set & Drift and your Leeway is perfectly in line with your Course Line.

A Wass ... he is acually measuring the distance in the left side of the chart.... on the latitude scale... where do you see him taking the distances on the longitude scale?
The latitude of The Earth is vertically going to the Poles from the Ecuator Line and the longitude is horisontally going to East or West from Greenwich... which is the prime meridian of Earth...
So, in my oppinion there is nothing wrong with his method of taking distances because he is taking it on latitude scale not longitude...

Should't this Set be corrected by the actual speed, which appears to have been more than 5kts? I'd expect a circle segment to be drawn, with center at start position, that crosses the DR. Think about it: If the real speed would have been 10kts, the tide flow calculation would be completely wrong, which to me indicates that this method is not correct.
