- Here I give you an exercise to help your horse find a bit more cadence and reach in the stride. Developing the trot from a flat and small trot into a trot with reach and suspension is a LONG process, but with the right tools it can happen!

Love how you take the horse right to edge of its fullest trot - where she breaks to canter. I was taught this is how you find the edge and extend the range of the gaits. LOVING your videos!

Love this video! Just what I need to do! I had been working on the Spanish Walk with him to help with improving on opening his shoulder ( had to stop because of his hind end suspensory surgery). This will be perfect once he gets his Clarence to go back to full time work! Thank you as always ❤️

Greetings from Kentucky. I think you could help your brother with this. You take good care of your horses spines - like S. Peters does through all your training and your compressing attempts. It is so easy to loose a horse's back when they raise their neck apprehensively and drop their spine. This will inevitably happen so many times while training. Immediate recognition and helping the horse go forward, lowering it's neck and getting its back up is the rider's responsibility- where you are very gifted. Thank you for this and all your great videos. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

My silly cob found his suspension after I showed him a video of Steffen riding his sire North Forks Card in a clinic. I have no other explanation. : ) Recently he has really found his second trot when I had to work in hand due to pain before a hip replacement and during recovery. I lightly tapped his shoulder and legs to encourage him to lighten up in front since he tends to overwhelm his front end with his good active hind and go on his forehand. Sugar cubes really inspired an otherwise lazy guy. (He has a little Clyde in him) Now while I'm getting my body back into riding, he starts bouncing in expectation of a treat and it's a bit much for my body at this point (think sticky clutch) and I want to giggle, but I can coax him more forward to his dismay. It translated into his canter which was weaker and he's in much better energy and self carriage. I used the treat for moving his shoulders over at the walk which he dislikes and he still doesn't like that movement. The shoulders leading leg yield should be helpful to lengthen his stride in the trot. Thanks!
Lovely young horse. Love videos explaining how to train. Have you any tips on improving the walk. My horse has an amazing trot and canter but his walk can get choppy and lose the rhythm when I collect it ..it is worse on the right rein.

Very Nice and very good job . There is few Things to mind it up for You. First; if You change directions so brief and often it's too much informations to understand for the horse( Nevers Forget its just an animal) then this work is right only when your horse is in perfect balance by Hilself. This balance depends on the way you are driving him through strict trajectory with smooth and light tension on the external rein.
You know all of this of course. Great job and generosity anyway 👍

im gonna start a horse thats a 6 year old pretty green jumper... his trot is like a solid 4 at best, his center is amazing and his jumping scope is man good but his trot is a solid 4...
Thank you, this is a good exercise 😊. Have you any exercises for a young horse that has a long sweeping stride, but needs more lift, and needs more hock action? I’ve been working on counter shoulder in on long side and shoulder in on short side , seems to help but he can fall behind the leg a little
I would try lots of transitions within the gait. Bring him way back, almost to walk where he puts weight on his hocks and the push him really forward to a medium trot and then way back almost to walk. These transitions will help him understand to engage and use his hocks.

Can you please make a video on troubleshooting the trot? I have trouble getting my horse working over his back. I usually warm him up on a long rein but he's trotting inverted! Only until I have done a ton of serpintines and cantering does he start to relax but I still feel like I have to really sponge the reins to get him under himself in the trot. I dont want my hands up in his mouth. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.
Hmmm! Ok I will try to do one. Or maybe send me a video and I can give you some feedback . It does sound like you are on the right track with using serpentines and canter work to warm him up 👍
How and when do you use ground poles or cavaletti to improve the trot?

I love your videos but it makes me so nervous that you’re driving and recoding the video- that’s so dangerous. It’s distracted driving which in most places is super illegal. I’m only pointing this out because it would be tragic if you got in an accident because you were talking to a video and not paying enough attention to the road. It’s not worth the risk. Put the phone away when you’re driving and record your thoughts when you’re not driving.
You’re too valuable to the horse world plus you don’t want to set bad examples for others. No one should have their phone in use while driving like this. Please stay safe and thank you for all the wonderful videos.
Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. This video is now 5 years old and I no longer record and drive. But also note, this was on a private road, so it was limited risk. But yes- I know better now and do better now :)
