I agree. Should have got a supporting actor nomination. Especially since this was the year Jack Palance got one for another comedy City Slickers. Although I give slight edge to Spencer Tracy's original Father of the Bride Short's characterization was one touch the original did not have and part of what makes this remake and it's sequel so enjoyable and rewatchable.

To anyone wanting to know why the cake is that expensive. There is a base fee ($4-5 per slice), then it rise based on how many tiers the cake is, fresh flowers will up the cost. If the flowers are hand crafted, it’ll be at least $5 a flower. If you use fondant, it’ll definitely up the cost. Then you have to factor in setup and delivery. When you factor all of that in, it sort of makes sense why that cake cost $1200.

    • @PastryChick
      @PastryChick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

New Jeffersonian I agree. There are shortcuts to getting a less expensive cake though:
      1) you can have only 1 tier of cake be real, the rest made of styrofoam and have a huge sheet cake to serve to the guest.
      2) choose an alternative dessert
      3) have a cupcake tower (less mess anyway)
      4) just have a desserts bar (if you provide boxes with it, then it can be your wedding favor as well)

This is truly quite the comedically genius (or near-so) and, still, topical formulation of dialogue, character line delivery, and acting, producing a DAMN great performance! This, with its mixture of French, intensely “German,” SO bluntly Israeli, and minor Panasian/Eurasian accents (to my ears), along with its French and ethnically Jewish-Franco combo wordings.
DISCLAIMER: This is all my opinion based on my studies and understandings, my comedic preferences, listening devices, and personal ears. We all hear things differently. Acoustic sciences have proven that, time and time again, each individual has a slightly-to-significantly different ear per each frequency range, independent from the differences in listening device‘s frequency output capabilities and other factors (harmonics, per-room/device resonant frequencies, performance per frequency band, straight-up lack of output of certain frequencies, equalizers affecting change, etc etc etc).
Like, specifically, the first greeting line “heellooo!” as well as some other main line delivery that are that classic, if maybe a tad
American theatrical, GENERALLY Germanic/Northern-East-Euro accent (think the well-known effeminate, flamboyant, with regionally-specific word-draws, East/North-East Euro accent, as relative to the target audience of the 90’s, in true Hollywood fashion as expected).
Then he seems to transition, mainly, into mix of French/farther Eastern Euro/Eurasian after a few minutes with him literally saying some French words that make sense along with the English thrown in each sentence, diction and syntax wise. With some Middle-Eastern emphasis on certain phrasing, lol.
Israeli accented: “In end, you’ll be very very happy,” also classic.
Israeli/Middle Eastern worded: When he says “Baba (là)! come along!” a commenter below believes he he says “papa-la,” which would have just been plain, albeit oddly executed, French; this is not so, in my opinion and to my ears. The Israeli accent singularly executed in this phrasing dictates the leaning in this direction - Essentially, an integrated Arabic word, Baba, used here for Dad/Father (even though historically it’s been used to, solely, refer to founders/leaders, as in founding ‘fathers’ or like ‘father of...’) - in addition to the French “-Là,” ce de qui, which seems to reinforce this comedic mash up of it all, or maybe I am reading to deep into the line delivery and characterization.
is typically used by family members informally, strictly, (think son to father in conversation, comme, Mais Papa! But dad!), but you know us Jews, if you’re footing the bill or mom is cooking for us, you’re family lol). To put it in normal American salesman English, it would just mean like “You over there, Dad, come along now!” or simply “The dad, come along now!” with an endearing & informal vibe. Papa-là and Baba-là would mean the same thing in this film’s character’s context of line delivery... so whatever; it would just seem to be more accurate to use hard that classic “B” BABA then là and go with it, per this character’s accent slurry and language usage. (It’d literally like be to exclaim... “Authority or Father, there!/THAT ‘father!’ Come along!” With THAT/THERE being distinct from THIS/HERE. Within context, maybe he means “dad, over there, come along!”
This of which, again, makes some sense to me when used in this scene‘s fashion, but, historically, it’s not the strict meaning, nor does it seem to be, as apparent to ME (someone else chime in), linguistically uniform.
Line delivery/script genius: He speaks, straight up, in mostly French or/and German esque linguistics beautifully (1:19 to 1:25 and again from 2:19 to 2:25 , here I he says with that English diction ending interruption (months instead of mois), and this is to say “...Which will be ... 7 months..” then saying HEELOOO in a mixed but distinctly flamboyant accent (think broadly German mixed with a 90’s Middle Eastern/mostly Israeli to my ears broad accent impression done for comedy), as if to forget himself in the moment as he reads through his supposed itinerary, to a great comedic effect. This Hellooo is relatively singular, lacking the pure Germanic-esque accent of the initial Hellooo! Like UH OH, not 7 but 5 months!
Positive-opinion rant over. Pllleeeaasseee reply as I love learning more about regional and historical linguistics. Baba, I thought, also is a Yiddish and/or Russian term for old matriarch or grandmother figure. So it has Middle Eastern roots, definitely, if not Pan-Asian or maybe Tippy-top-Northern African roots (by modern geography, NOT that of yesteryear). Correct me if I’m wrong!! I wanna learn more!!

I'd feel TERRIBLE if I made my parents spend this much on my wedding. Absolutely fucking terrible. I wouldn't even be able to enjoy my honeymoon. I would keep it small and sweet. ONLY close family from both sides and a few friends. At a reasonably priced venue or country club. No more than 70-80 people, absolute tops.
Huge weddings aren't even fun anyway and massively overrated.

Agreed. My sister got married A year ago and it was insane!! I mean, it was wonderful. But there was so much stuff that I kept thinking, "Do my parents realize that they have another daughter, me?". When I'm getting married, I'm having my wedding on the Beach. Simple, elegant, and fun!!
