I'll never understand why America has to try and remake all of these great British shows. Just watch the British version. You don't see us remaking things like Breaking Bad etc. We just watch the original version as we both speak the same language, for the most part at least.

There's no limitations on curse words and how often they can be used, violence, sexual references, drug use and pretty much anything US advertisers don't like. We literally have a dating show that is basically softcore porn with so much full frontal nudity that it puts Game of Thrones to shame.
Life on Mars is one of the best British drama's ever made. It's got a nice blend of crime solving, psychological thriller, comedy with a couple hints of horror too. You did see a clip during the British only brands when they were talking about Party of Five. Definitely recommended and only two seasons so not that long.
I recall that Americans wanted to make their own versions of Blackadder but Rowan Atkinson vetoed it - they would have made 30 episodes and it would have been a diluted rip off .
except for seasons 3 and 4, how would they have done a version of 1 and 2, season 1 was set way before the Western world had even discovered America and 2 at the time it was just discovered

I can't believe RED DWARF was not included in there. If you guy's get a chance you HAVE to check out the dwarf. The actress who played Daphni in Fraisiar ( sorry bad spelling) played Holly in the American version. I think it only had 1 or 2 episodes compared to 12 seasons and a movie of the original brit programme ❤
Yeah, I agree. From what I gather they only made the pilot. Also Robert Llewellyn (who was the only UK cast member to be offered a roll in the remake) has stated that him agreeing to go over to the US to do the show was probably one of the biggest mistakes of his career, and as a result it caused a bit of a rift between him and the rest of the OG cast members. He admitted that his ego got the better of him and he got swept up in the whole Hollywood thing and thought it would be his "big break" and lost sight of how much the OG show had already done for him.
british shameless is gold. Ive never seen any american react to "shameless" though. it's one of those shows that seem to have been lost to people. along with shows like "men behaving badly" and "2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps" then you have even lesser remembered shows which were really good, such as "my family" "absolutely fabulous" and "rita sue and bob too" "the vicar of dibley". Theres many more though
I don't like any other remakes except Shameless. Honestly the American version is so good. Its the only show they've ever got right as a remake. I find the usual American ones cringe and toned down but honestly the American 1 is absolutely bonker 😂😂
Original Life on Mars & the sequel: Ashes to Ashes were amazing and I would highly recommend watching them.... gives a good take on what the police were like back in the 70's and early 80s
I think the reason British shows don't go over in America is you don't get sarcasm and irony which we Brits have in spades. I have to say I, also, love Big bang theory. 🇬🇧🇺🇸💜
Also, UK humor is too vulgar sometimes for American Television. we're considered land of the free, yet we have to limit what we say and bleep and censor words and scenes.

The 1996 Doctor Who TV movie is not a remake and if it never happened we wouldn't have got the great novels, comic strips and audio plays featuring the eighth Doctor and the show from 2005 on shouldn;t be called a reboot either like soon people do.
Anna felt old because she could remember Teen Mom on MTV. Imagine how ancient those of us who remember when MTV showed nothing but music feel. U.K. Life on Mars (2 series) and the follow up Ashes to Ashes (3 series) are definitely worth a watch. Remember that U.K. series are much shorter than US seasons, each series has eight one hour episodes.

I absolutely loved it.. then I started watching the US version, and I couldn't make it through the first episode! It was big smelly pants ! I grew up with American Tv, but the best are when you do your own!.. not try to remake what us Brits make... Also , I am going to show my age.. I fell in love with "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits as it came out in 1985, and I was singing "I want my MTV" at the top of my lungs, but I didn't know what MTV was 😂😂😂 MTV was not televised in Britain or Australia until the late 80s/ 90s I think ? Anyway, fun reaction you guys 👍 I learnt something new today ! 😃
I've never seen either version of Shameless. When someone asked me why I didn't watch it I said "Because I have lived around those people. I grew up close to where it was set. It's not a black comedy, it's a documentary." PS. In the UK it's set in Salford which is up the road from the area I was born in.
Love Life on Mars. Great series. The Young Ones, Fawlty Towers and The Inbetweeners are classics and very British in humour. Another great show that we have over here is Friday Night Dinners. Love this show 😁
I love the fact, that for the remake of Broadchurch (Gracepoint) they even used the same main actor (once again the brilliant David Tennant) 😅 but the US remake couldn’t capture the atmosphere/tone of the show quite right…

The problem is the humour gets lost in translation. British get american humour and thats why american shows do well over in britain but americans don't get british humour. So they change it up to suit an american audience and it doesnt work.

Life on Mars was a phenomenal show. Sam Tyler was a detective who gets shot and wakes up in 1973. He doesnt know if its real, a dream or time travel. As the show goes on its revealed he was in a coma and 1973 was real, but at the end of the show the only way he can get back there is to commit suicide.
Curious to know what you'd make of Fawlty Towers & The Young Ones. Us Brits love them but not sure how well it would travel. Plus now they are 40 years old
The IT Crowd is far superior to The Big Bang Theory. The IT Crowd actually embraces nerd culture and the jokes are hilarious. If you like TBBT then I can't see why you wouldn't also love The IT Crowd.
They didn't mention the absolute travesty that was the US attempted remake of Red Dwarf, It was cancelled after the pilot, and for good reason. It was awful! They also tried to remake the classic Robbie Barker comedy, Porridge. That was terrible as well.
Oh there are many more... One that springs to mind is Utopia The American version was so changed from the original it was hardly recognisable. The Original Chanel 4 (UK) version was fantastic no Eye scooping out with a Tea Spoon in the American one.
The Young Ones should be required viewing for every person under 25, it was a brilliant slice of early 80s social commentary and one of the funniest shows ever, I still watch it regularly to this day. Watery Fowls, I mean Fawlty Towers is simply untouchable, the same applies to Dr Who. I grew up watching them originally. Coupling is one of my favourite shows ever, My mate got me the boxset to help me recover from heart surgery, it has friends beat by miles, trust me.

When it was first due to air on the B.B.C. on 22nd November 1963 it had to be postponed for one day because of the assassination of John F Kennedy on that same day. At that time we only had two television channels over here, namely BBC and ITV, and both of them had to prioritise news coverage on that particular day over their ordinary broadcasts for obvious reasons. A little bit of trivia about Cold Feet, the British version had Helen Baxendale, Emily from Friends who marries Ross, her character was called Rachel, whose name of course Ross says at his wedding to Emily
"Steptoe and Son" became "Sanford and Son". "Veep"is a remake of "In the Thick of It". Cosby"s last series borrowed from "One Foot in the Grave". There is no copying "Fawlty Towers" or "Yes Minister" as it just can't be done.
Anna, Doctor Who, pre: relaunch (pre: 2005,) can be missed out for anyone trying to familiarize themselves with the program. The original 26 series, (1963 to 1989,) were closer to a children's drama program than to the science fiction classic that the relaunched version, (13 series, so far,) is. Watching from the first David Eccleston series should be enough to familiarize anyone with what Doctor Who is all about, with episodes like "Dalek", "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" (two parter) & "Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways" (two parter) sure to get you hooked, but then there's lots of better stuff to come with the start of the three David Tennant series, with the high point coming in series 3 (Tennant's second series,) beginning with "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" (two parter) and reaching the heights with "Blink" - almost definitely the best episode of Doctor Who ever made, (and the Doctor is hardly in it!)
I have NO IDEA why he would say that about The big bang theory!! Outrageous! I really hope it won't put you off watching some of those recommendations. Faulty Towers is a CLASSIC and so funny. I think Big Bang lost its way a while ago. It was much better when the guys were all single, the hook ups made the running joke about them being virgins obsolete.
The Coupling remake was horrific, they used the exact same script of the pilot word for word, but somehow just made the Jeff character super creepy even with the same script! Awful! If you can get the original series it’s great and if you love TBBT you’ll love The IT Crowd (only the UK version though!)
My problem is that we in England get the original American version of whatever the programme may be. Why does anything made outside of America gave to re made for Americans? Cinema paridiso is an Italian film that i love watching, my favourite film ever. I would be offended and angry if us British tried to remake it. I feel the American production companies really insult the normal American by trying to make shows that they think will be better for the American people without letting the people choose what they watch and how they watch it. It's like a strange entertainment propaganda.

The problem with the Inbetweeners is that it is not a show about teenagers growing up, it is a show about teenagers growing up IN THE UK. Huge amounts of the comedy and relatability of it are due to British cultural touchstones and references that you cannot have in a foreign version, unless you have excellent writers that can 'translate' them.
Blackpool, was the show filmed in my home town Blackpool. Blackpool is a popular tourist town, I guess it could be seen as UK version of Vegas I guess that's why they remade it there.
Life on Mars was great and there was a sequel set in the 80s, Ashes to Ashes. I won't spoil it but essentially in both, police wakes up back in time.. it's deeper than that but I can't give away the secrets 😋

To be fair the Dr Who film wasn't a remake, it was an attempted relaunch involving the BBC. The one show out of those that you really must watch is Fawlty Towers, just 12 episodes but it is the number one British sitcom. They have tried several US versions, all awful, stick to the original.
Fawlty Towers - only 12 episodes ever made and a 100% ageless funny classic. Coupling - 28 episodes over 4 series - forget the fourth as a key character was replaced and it was not the same without him. Side splitting - especially Steve's rants . All time favourites though have to be Black Adder and Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister. Actors at the top of their game. Well worth you guys checking out.
Dude, i was watching a TV series called Colony and they cancelled it 4 season in, now that's what i call taking the piss. It was an awesome show, i have no idea why they cancelled it.
Having lived both sides of the Pond, my kids' and my observations are that US remakes are simply too glossy, the characters just too physically perfect, and the grittiness and vulgarity and bad language are all moderated so much that the pithiness of the original is lost. The exception was All in the Family, a remake of Britain's To Death Us Do Part.
Our comedy is so complex, and what we are known for, we cannot expect everyone to understand it. Would be hilarious to see if they could or would remake an American Only Fools and Horses.
Even the UK could not re-make only fools and horses anymore, it was appropriate for the era but too much has changed for it to work. Those little sketches about new mobile phones, "statelites" for TV etc: the world moves so fast now I can't see a way to give a character that level of ignorance to the world around them that would stay true to the show. In America I can only see rednecks doing it and even thinking that hurts.
Well they did a remake of Steptoe & Son ("Sandford & Son") and of Till Death Do Us Part ("All In The Family") with varying levels of success, but neither come close to the excellence of the UK originals. The USA even made a pilot episode of a Dad's Army remake ("The Rear Guard") but it never became a continuing program, perhaps because the subject matter, (old men training and waiting for a German invasion during World War II,) never happened in the USA, and it's difficult to make a situation comedy for a non-existent situation!
If you like butter on bread, wait 'til you've sprinkled a little crushed rock salt on there, you'll never turn back. The salt enhances the flavour considerably. It's lovely on toast as well.
This reminds me something funny 20 years ago when I went on a weekend internet retreat in the UK and people from around the world attended. We were eating breakfast and chatting, getting to know each other, and this guy randomly picked up a pepper pot and added a lot of black pepper on his toast. We all just froze and stared at him in disbelief. Then he picked up a salt pot and sprinkled that on too, and everyone at the table had gone completely silent. When he looked up to see why he realised we were all gawping at him. Poor guy went beetroot and muttered, in a thick German accent.. "thee pepr 'as a mistak" Of course, being British, we spent the weekend periodically repeating that phrase back to him and pissing ourselves laughing. Thank gawd he saw the funny side too and laughed with us. It sure did break the ice though :D Thank you for the memory prompt!
The U.S. tried three times to remake Fawlty Towers, all failed. You should check out U.K. Coupling. Very much an adult targeted form of Friends. The U.S. copy of Coupling was disappointing. The issue with U.S. shows is each episode has a dozen writers, etc... in the U.K. it'll have two writers, with the occasional guest writer.
I can't think of ANY US comedy shows that have been remade in the UK we just get the US originals. However, I'm sure that many of the awful quiz show formats in the UK are of US origin.

Love Life on Mars. Great series. The Young Ones, Fawlty Towers and The Inbetweeners are classics and very British in humour. Another great show that we have over here is Friday Night Dinners. Love this show 😁
YOU really should watch some episodes of THE YOUNG ONES I grew up watching them and they were hilarious. Worth watching. R.I.P RIK brilliant actor.
I love the fact, that for the remake of Broadchurch (Gracepoint) they even used the same main actor (once again the brilliant David Tennant) 😅 but the US remake couldn’t capture the atmosphere/tone of the show quite right…

If you actually did a Doctor Who reaction, I would be so happy. People who haven't seen it think it's very geeky, but it's actually well thought out, funny and quite emotional

"Coupling" (the UK version) is a masterclass in comedy writing and performance.

Still one of my favourite programmes to this day and I don’t think i was even old enough to watch it when it first aired, I quote Jeff all the time but no one gets the references lol often find myself in a giggle loop 😜

Faulty towers is a must see, I also loved the Inbetweeners ( series not the film) the It crowd ,cold feet and coupling are definitely worth a watch .
The problem is the humour gets lost in translation. British get american humour and thats why american shows do well over in britain but americans don't get british humour. So they change it up to suit an american audience and it doesnt work.
I’ve never understood American humour, I find it hard to find it funny. I do find a little bit funny from time to time but it’s very rare

Life on Mars was a phenomenal show. Sam Tyler was a detective who gets shot and wakes up in 1973. He doesnt know if its real, a dream or time travel. As the show goes on its revealed he was in a coma and 1973 was real, but at the end of the show the only way he can get back there is to commit suicide.
I loved it. Even Ashes to Ashes was great.

The two main actors in Young Ones are also in a show called Bottom. Which is one of my all time favourite shows, comedy gold.

The IT Crowd is far superior to The Big Bang Theory. The IT Crowd actually embraces nerd culture and the jokes are hilarious. If you like TBBT then I can't see why you wouldn't also love The IT Crowd.

The Life On Mars ending sounds worse than the snow globe ending to St. Elsewhere.
They didn't mention the absolute travesty that was the US attempted remake of Red Dwarf, It was cancelled after the pilot, and for good reason. It was awful!
They also tried to remake the classic Robbie Barker comedy, Porridge. That was terrible as well.

The American version was so changed from the original it was hardly recognisable.
The Original Chanel 4 (UK) version was fantastic no Eye scooping out with a Tea Spoon in the American one.
The Young Ones should be required viewing for every person under 25, it was a brilliant slice of early 80s social commentary and one of the funniest shows ever, I still watch it regularly to this day. Watery Fowls, I mean Fawlty Towers is simply untouchable, the same applies to Dr Who. I grew up watching them originally. Coupling is one of my favourite shows ever, My mate got me the boxset to help me recover from heart surgery, it has friends beat by miles, trust me.
The problem with US comedy shows is that they use American humour, and we all know it's not that funny.
Living in the Uk, I definitely recommend: IT Crowd, Father Ted, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, and Black Books. Happy viewing.
Anna and JT, speaking of Doctor Who here's a little known fact about it for you. When it was first due to air on the B.B.C. on 22nd November 1963 it had to be postponed for one day because of the assassination of John F Kennedy on that same day. At that time we only had two television channels over here, namely BBC and ITV, and both of them had to prioritise news coverage on that particular day over their ordinary broadcasts for obvious reasons.

A little bit of trivia about Cold Feet, the British version had Helen Baxendale, Emily from Friends who marries Ross, her character was called Rachel, whose name of course Ross says at his wedding to Emily
"Steptoe and Son" became "Sanford and Son". "Veep"is a remake of "In the Thick of It". Cosby"s last series borrowed from "One Foot in the Grave". There is no copying "Fawlty Towers" or "Yes Minister" as it just can't be done.

Doctor Who, pre: relaunch (pre: 2005,) can be missed out for anyone trying to familiarize themselves with the program. The original 26 series, (1963 to 1989,) were closer to a children's drama program than to the science fiction classic that the relaunched version, (13 series, so far,) is.
Watching from the first David Eccleston series should be enough to familiarize anyone with what Doctor Who is all about, with episodes like "Dalek", "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" (two parter) & "Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways" (two parter) sure to get you hooked, but then there's lots of better stuff to come with the start of the three David Tennant series, with the high point coming in series 3 (Tennant's second series,) beginning with "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" (two parter) and reaching the heights with "Blink" - almost definitely the best episode of Doctor Who ever made, (and the Doctor is hardly in it!)
I have NO IDEA why he would say that about The big bang theory!! Outrageous!

I think Big Bang lost its way a while ago. It was much better when the guys were all single, the hook ups made the running joke about them being virgins obsolete.

Big bang theory was total crap, IT Crowd was sublime.
The Coupling remake was horrific, they used the exact same script of the pilot word for word, but somehow just made the Jeff character super creepy even with the same script! Awful! If you can get the original series it’s great and if you love TBBT you’ll love The IT Crowd (only the UK version though!)
The Big Bang theory was OK for about 2 seasons, then dropped, The IT Crowd is an all-time classic comedy.
My problem is that we in England get the original American version of whatever the programme may be. Why does anything made outside of America gave to re made for Americans? Cinema paridiso is an Italian film that i love watching, my favourite film ever. I would be offended and angry if us British tried to remake it. I feel the American production companies really insult the normal American by trying to make shows that they think will be better for the American people without letting the people choose what they watch and how they watch it. It's like a strange entertainment propaganda.

What JT said 5 mins in is why I cannot get invested in American shows. You guys cancel them in a heartbeat. And there have some some amazing shows that deserved a lot more, such as The Last Man on Earth.
The problem with the Inbetweeners is that it is not a show about teenagers growing up, it is a show about teenagers growing up IN THE UK. Huge amounts of the comedy and relatability of it are due to British cultural touchstones and references that you cannot have in a foreign version, unless you have excellent writers that can 'translate' them.
If you have the ability to watch it on whatever streaming service you have I REALLY REALLY recommend Life on Mars and the sequel Ashe's to Ashe's 👍🏻👍🏻
Blackpool, was the show filmed in my home town Blackpool. Blackpool is a popular tourist town, I guess it could be seen as UK version of Vegas I guess that's why they remade it there.
Life on Mars was great and there was a sequel set in the 80s, Ashes to Ashes. I won't spoil it but essentially in both, police wakes up back in time.. it's deeper than that but I can't give away the secrets 😋
Wait, stop, you hadn’t heard of Fawlty Towers??? That is tragic. The others, I can see - not everything is gonna make it across the pond, but Fawlty towers is iconic. I’m surprised, especially given how widely popular monty python is!
To be fair the Dr Who film wasn't a remake, it was an attempted relaunch involving the BBC. The one show out of those that you really must watch is Fawlty Towers, just 12 episodes but it is the number one British sitcom. They have tried several US versions, all awful, stick to the original.
The one they absolutely FAILED at remaking was "Red Dwarf", never got past the (USA) pilot. Totally missed the humour of the programme
Fawlty Towers is outstanding and hilarious, definitely reccomend checking it out. Especially the Germans episode!

Fawlty Towers - only 12 episodes ever made and a 100% ageless funny classic. Coupling - 28 episodes over 4 series - forget the fourth as a key character was replaced and it was not the same without him. Side splitting - especially Steve's rants . All time favourites though have to be Black Adder and Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister. Actors at the top of their game. Well worth you guys checking out.
SWAMP THING got cancelled days after its premier, crazy thing is the show is actually good and definitely deserved a shot.

Dude, i was watching a TV series called Colony and they cancelled it 4 season in, now that's what i call taking the piss. It was an awesome show, i have no idea why they cancelled it.
Having lived both sides of the Pond, my kids' and my observations are that US remakes are simply too glossy, the characters just too physically perfect, and the grittiness and vulgarity and bad language are all moderated so much that the pithiness of the original is lost. The exception was All in the Family, a remake of Britain's To Death Us Do Part.

Our comedy is so complex, and what we are known for, we cannot expect everyone to understand it. Would be hilarious to see if they could or would remake an American Only Fools and Horses.
Even the UK could not re-make only fools and horses anymore, it was appropriate for the era but too much has changed for it to work. Those little sketches about new mobile phones, "statelites" for TV etc: the world moves so fast now I can't see a way to give a character that level of ignorance to the world around them that would stay true to the show.
In America I can only see rednecks doing it and even thinking that hurts.

Well they did a remake of Steptoe & Son ("Sandford & Son") and of Till Death Do Us Part ("All In The Family") with varying levels of success, but neither come close to the excellence of the UK originals.
The USA even made a pilot episode of a Dad's Army remake ("The Rear Guard") but it never became a continuing program, perhaps because the subject matter, (old men training and waiting for a German invasion during World War II,) never happened in the USA, and it's difficult to make a situation comedy for a non-existent situation!
Fawlty Towers, not faulty. I don't think Americans would get the humour.

This reminds me something funny 20 years ago when I went on a weekend internet retreat in the UK and people from around the world attended.
We were eating breakfast and chatting, getting to know each other, and this guy randomly picked up a pepper pot and added a lot of black pepper on his toast.
We all just froze and stared at him in disbelief.
Then he picked up a salt pot and sprinkled that on too, and everyone at the table had gone completely silent.
When he looked up to see why he realised we were all gawping at him.
Poor guy went beetroot and muttered, in a thick German accent..
"thee pepr 'as a mistak"
Of course, being British, we spent the weekend periodically repeating that phrase back to him and pissing ourselves laughing.
Thank gawd he saw the funny side too and laughed with us. It sure did break the ice though :D

The U.S. tried three times to remake Fawlty Towers, all failed.
You should check out U.K. Coupling. Very much an adult targeted form of Friends. The U.S. copy of Coupling was disappointing.
The issue with U.S. shows is each episode has a dozen writers, etc... in the U.K. it'll have two writers, with the occasional guest writer.
Another one missing from the list - the 2009 USA remake of "The Prisoner" other than the name almost nothing is even close to the original.
I can't think of ANY US comedy shows that have been remade in the UK we just get the US originals. However, I'm sure that many of the awful quiz show formats in the UK are of US origin.
