    Phurpa are a Russian-based musical collective and performance group - a darkling clan of ritual musicians upholding performative practices from the Bon - one of the oldest Buddhist traditions from Tibet. Their 'singing' technique is intensely specific: a tantric, gutteral song from the depth of the throat.
    While we were out in Moscow for Stay True Russia, we had the quiet honour of filming them in situ. Deeply meditative, darkly affecting and strangely light all at once - it's like nothing BR have ever hosted before. Tune in, zone out and take flight.

    Seeing them live is something very special. It’s more like a ritual experience or religious experience not a show. Its like your soul was drowned in black, thick liquid and then was taken back.

    i really dont get why there are so many dislikes! so what if this strictly isn't 'music' boiler room is videoing something we normally wouldn't be exposed to, dont see at as a dj set or a music gig. its more of a show that's deeply symbolic and spiritual for the performers and interesting to watch for outsiders. throat singing is quite incredible, and theres a lot of cool instruments they're using. kudos to boiler room for showcasing something a bit more outside the box. if people dont like it, watch another video!

      ells101 How can the uploader know what people like if you don't tell him I like or I don't like it?
      So I understand you, but you were wrong about the like/dislike imo.

    • @ells101
      @ells101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrNaichwersonst very true the uploader can't know but just scrolling through the comments and a lot of people are complaining that it's not music. if people genuinely dont like it fair enough that's taste, but you shouldnt dislike for the fact it's not 'music'.

      ells101 Debating what is or is not music is the most boring and useless discussion as it is anyway. Only thing that matters if what you are hearing is engaging or not.

    I saw this group perform entirely on accident while on vacation in Iceland. They performed at an Icelandic Black Metal Festival at the Gaukerinn, which turned out to be a small divebar venue. They played a few sets after NYIÞ and Mysþerming (two other bands that also changed my life).
    Phurpa closed the night out with something like 3 hours of ceremonial performance. By the end, all these headbanging metalheads from around the world were laying on the ground just letting the subsonic soundbath wash over them.

    Seriously, the comments... This is not hipster, this is not "experimental music", this is Tibetan ritual music or at least inspired by it. But the instruments are the same, throat singing as well and even the note sheets they use. And it is beautiful and special. Phurpa is transcendental, not for everyone.

    This is on another level. The comments should be disabled for a video like this. Educate yourself about what they are doing and use your ears to experience the insane sonic qualities that they are creating together. To really appreciate this you need a large subwoofer or excellent headphones. This deserves nothing but silence and full attention.

    To everyone who calls this lame. I thought the same, too and man I never was so wrong. I experienced them by myself and holy cow...! This was a trip I could never imagine. At first I wanted to give them some minutes and go home but they started and it was so mysterious and the sound was so extreme and new I staied the whole time till the end and never regret it. They can growl so deep. my whole body and the whole hall were vibrating. the bass was louder and stronger then all the other bands who played before phurpa. you need to experience it live and you need an open mind. oh well and some patience and attention. Really recommendable!

      This particular one isn't buddhist but is based on Tibetan Bön religion chants, Bön being the native shamanic religion of Tibet before Buddhism. But Tibetan Buddhism is a hybrid of buddhism and the Bön traditions so that's where the similarities come from. Also nice to find another person who appreciates and vibes to Tibetan monk chants and whatnot, I have a similar relaxing and meditative experience listening to these types of music.
