I listened to it all the way through and it was wonderful. I've been lately discouraged, because going to college has made it all the more real how rare my faith can be in some circles. I am so grateful that, as a child, I attended a church where both The Lord's Prayer and The Apostle's Creed were recited weekly, enabling me to have them memorized and hidden in my heart, even through my tumultuous, rebellious youth. The joy they bring when reciting them as a believer reminds me of the emotion you expressed as you delved into each word...a treasure❤.

    I watched until the end.
I would love to see a video on other creeds like this one. For me, this is a great style of video: the length and references are perfect to use before doing a deep dive into the study of a creed. It goes deep enough to make me think about every topic as thoroughly as possible, but not so much that it feels overly intellectualized or hard to understand.
My mind is stuck on the idea of Christ's body physically being seated at the Right hand of the Father, and I don’t think I would have ever come to that realization before this video. I'm emotionally overwhelmed at the implications that concept provides and it brings me right back to the heart of the Gospel.
Please pray my Church uses this Creed in our Liturgy one day, we're a liturgical baptist church but don't have this involved in our liturgy.
Thank you so much for posting it.

I found your channel a few weeks ago, as someone raised in a protestant (baptist) family I was never really taught about the theology behind our church, I myself never looked into church history so when asked questions about it by either Catholics or Orthodox friends I was easily placed in doubt about my own faith but thankfully your videos had a lot of answers to my many many questions regarding protestantism. My italian classroom had this quote I always loved, "Un popolo che non sa da dove viene, non sa dove va", it translates to "A people who don't know where they come from, don't know where they are going.", and sincerely for a lot of churches I have frequented this has been the bitter truth, as an internal critique, I feel like a lot of protestants (myself included, and I hope I am not generalizing too much) don't know about their church's history and it was refreshing for a young Christian like me to find a protestant apologetics channel that explains complicated theological questions so clearly. Thanks for this excellent video on the Apostles' Creed Gavin, and more generally thanks for the work you do. God bless.

I have a very similar testimony here! I was raised in my Dad's church, which was a "Bible church", and later I found out that means mostly baptist. I don't mean "Bible church" in any negative way, thats just what it was.
Anyway, I'm extremely grateful for my dad's preaching and teaching, but like you, I had very little connection to church history. I have recently joined a PCA church, and I've been introduced to the creeds for pretty much the first time. It's awesome to sense the historic connection between the words we say and the ancient church. When I grew up, I didn't have any of that.

I will ignore your "yoked errors" comment regarding my Church, and try to meet you where you are at. I would suggest you try to find a confessional Lutheran Church (i.e. not ELCA) or an ANCA Anglican Church. Otherwise, I think you are going to continue to be disappointed in your liturgical experience. I know they aren't everywhere, so it may be tough. Maybe one of the breakoff Methodist Churches in a congregation that is as high church as possible. That might be second. Or a similar Presbyterian Church of a like - minded congregation.

For the same concepts in earlier expressions Pre Vatican II - see the following from Pope IX: Singulari Quadam (1854, not 1856 or 1912 if doing Google Search), Quanto Conficiamur Moerore (1863) and and the Holy Office Letter with respect to the Feeney controversy (1949). Wonderful video. I try to pray the Apostles Creed every day. There is something sweet about being a Western Christian and having this Western profession that stretches back so far.
This is my favorite quote about the creed:
“Thus also, the text of the creed is not my text. It belongs rather to the community, to the one catholic church which reaches across time, back to the apostles and ahead to those who will greet the resurrection. A creedal recitation is not the expression of the current inventory of my religious opinions; I have not looked inside myself, discovered that I currently think God to be “Father,” “Almighty,” etc., next discovered that you currently make exactly the same inventory, and so joined with you in self-expression. The personal commitment made by reciting the creed is rather that I declare allegiance to the continuing community which stipulates its faith by this text.”

This was a blessing. As a young person I 100% agree…we are hungry for genuine authentic Christianity, discipleship, and worship. Stop trying to entertain us with rock concerts, surface teaching that requires no discipline, and don’t quench the moving of the Spirit. That is too often the case. If it is true and glorifies our Lord Jesus Christ and that is our heart’s desire we will jump all in. Stop doing church like a customer service center and catering to the people. That day we come together is sacred and we MUST go deeper, not concerning ourselves with trying to be inclusive to a new person coming through the door. If we commune with one another and our Lord through the Spirit in holiness and love the world will know Jesus is Lord. Anything else is compromise. Thanks again Dr. Ortlund.

Watched to the end. I went through Village Church’s study of the Apostle’s Creed a few years ago, and it was delightful.

I loved this. It's helping me sermon prep. I also love Gavin's humility and application is such a pastoral way. It does make me wonder with how much passion Gavin has, and how much love and care he shows, how he doesn't dip into a hopeful universalism (Christian). To say that Christianity has such joy and hope in knowing this all ends with a happy ending, but then to acknowledge that most people, even some people, end up outside of that happy ending, just doesn't settle with me until I am convinced that God will truly make all things new, restore all things, that all will acknowledge Christ and joyfully confess his Lordship. This isn't a negative comment by any means! I think Apocatastasis logically follows from these great doctrines that Gavin shares so passionately.

God bless you, Gavin. This video brought tears in my eyes. As I’m going through so many personal issues and dealing with stress right now, focusing in on the very foundation of our faith and hope as you’ve done here is a massive encouragement.

I disagree about the part where he said they handled His body- they most probably had servants to help with that, not to mention that the Holy Women and His mother were there. In Jewish practice, men could embalm men, but not women; women could embalm both.

One of the better videos Gavin has put out. How many have recited the Apostle's Creed and never given any thought to much of what Gavin brings to the surface? This is one of the better videos Gavin has put out. I really liked how he pointed folks to go deeper and brought many aspects of the creed that I certainly hadn't thought about while reciting it. Have you?
I wonder how much thought and effort was put in to the creed by the Apostles when they penned it? And doesn't it say something significant that it is believed to have been part of early baptisms as part of the confession before being baptized?
What does that say about Baptisms today? Especially the mass baptisms that have recently been reported.

This was great! Thank you, Gavin. I've recently run a Confirmation course for some teens in our church that focuses on the Apostles' Creed. This is a resource that I think will help sharpen my explanations in the future.
Edit: Forgot to say - I watched to the end.

Watched to the end.. and I'd like to see you do the other creeds as well. I think it's super important. As I believe some or most folks in the pew don't know the complete historical context or been fully caticised through the creeds. Me included.
