    I love how Jet was a great example to show the gang what happens if they leave their sense of justice and hubris unchecked. It taught them very early on that even tho they are the good guys, that doesn’t make everything they do right, they can never lose their humanity or they will become just like the bad guys

      That's true and, looking at the three books, this lessons acts as foreshadowing for the dillema that Aang had to deal when he fought the Firelord: how to defeat him without killing and going against his moral values? Episodes like these and the King of Omashu really develop Aang, showing him learning how to solve conflicts by choosing not the easy path, but the right one (in the words of Bumi, he end up having to think like a mad genius).

      I think Jet is a perfect blend of all the best character traits from the the main 3, but corrupted by vengeance. Sokka's leadership is used to control his friends and corrupt their ideals; Aang's charm and confidence is used to manipulate those around him for his own gain; Katara's strength and unwavering morality is shaped into a tool of revenge against everything fire nation.

    Jet might be the most underrated character in the show. He did a great job showing the moral grayness of war and his interactions with zoku and iroh were great. His death was also arguably the best in the series just for the tragic irony of him being killed by the de facto leader of the nation he was trying to protect.

    'Jet' is what got me hooked to Avatar as a kid. It established Sokka's role in the group, and was the start of the show introducing darker themes *in its characters*. Avatar goes out of its way to show how war affects these kids, and Jet may be the most tragic of all of them.

    Jet is a victim of war. Just like Aang. He can't move on from what the fire nation did to him. I love that about him. Jet continues the cycle violence which will ensure that war keeps happening. Sokka is like Jet except Sokka acknwoledges the bad things that happened to him but Sokka doesn't let let his past make him harm civilians who he knows most likely had nothing to do with the violence that chases them on their journey with Aang. Typed this before watching the video.

      I’m just realizing there’s so much missed potential for a dialogue between him and Iroh. Jet would never start listening, of course, but Iroh could easily point out the flawed logic in saying “you killed my son” and connect that to Jet.

    • @michaeld4861
      @michaeld4861 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Jet is justified in not moving on. The Fire Nation didn't stop being evil after they killed his parents. He's not just continuing some cycle of mindless violence, he is actively resisting an occupation force in a war. That is 100% justified. As Nelson Mandela once said the oppressor decides the nature of the struggle. In this case violent resistance. His careless disregard for civilians is another story and he was clearly blinded by hatred in his first episode.

    Jet was great, I wish he and the other freedom fighters got more screen time, giving them more depth. I really loved Sokka's role in the episode, helping & gaining the trust of the old innocent man that Jet assaulted and then saving all the people from the village, that was great, really showing Sokka's empathy for other people and leadership skills, not just portraying him as a goofball. Maybe you could make a video about the live action netflix show now that almost the entire cast has been revealed? Say some things you hope the live action show will do different and that kinda stuff. I hope they dedicate more screen time to Jet and the other freedom fighters, give us more Ozai and give him more depth, and show more of the war and how it has affected every nation, because sometimes the war in the original show felt a bit small

    Can you talk about the episode The Desert? I think it's easily the most underrated and overlooked episode of the entire show, as it shows that the gaang can be lost without Appa in more ways than one. Not only do they have their own skills to carry them through the vast desert, but every character is at a new low. Toph can't see anything and is blamed for Appa's capture. Sokka and Momo trip on cactus juice. Aang is so emotionally distraught that he abandons and yells at his friends on multiple occasions, meaning Katara is the only one who can step into the leadership role by desperately holding the group together. The scene where a buzzard wasp (I think that's what they're called) captures Momo and Aang goes after it, only to go the extra mile to kill it out of anger, abandoning his pacifist principles, only highlight how lost Aang is mentally, physically, and emotionally without his oldest friend. And of course, we have the ending of the episode, in which Aang activates the avatar state on the sandbenders when he learns that Appa was sold and muzzled, causing everyone to flee out of fear for safety, except Katara. As she grabs the monstrous looking Aang's arm, the look on her face is just sad and tired. Tired of watching everyone, especially Aang, suffer so much from losing a member of their family. Their quiet hug and Aang leaning into Katara, sobbing, was such a beautiful and somber way to end the episode. Plus, it gave us build up to the White Lotus, and cactus juice, which will never not be funny. It's such an underrated and crucial episode in my opinion, and I think the rest of the fandom should give it the credit it deserves.
    Great video, by the way. Totally agree that Jet is a subtly essential episode, and I think all of your content (including Avatar) is pretty great. Keep up the good work, Captain!

    Something I always think about with the character of Jet. His ultimate demise was a domino effect caused by Iroh heating up his tea. Just think about that for a sec. Jet was in the process of turning his life around with a new more sensible team of freedom fighters. Then Iroh does something that is both in and out of character. Like what was he thinking!? From then on it's a continuous spiral of bad decision that I can't even blame Jet for. I mean, from his perspective 2 fire benders just infiltrated the most impenetrable city. If he Just had a little more time to understand Zuko I'm like 90% positive they would have become best friends and Ba Sing Se wouldn't have fallen. All because Iroh wanted hot tea. A true tragedy.

    Yet more great observations from Captain Midnight. I would add that the way Jet is written makes him quite intriguing. Maybe you’re right that only someone inexperienced with, or particularly susceptible to manipulation (which, by the way, isn’t only the young, believe me) would have been enrolled in Jet’s scheme. But Jet read all three regular characters like a book, and played all but Sokka like a piano. He even made some headway with Sokka at first. The writers did a great job with Jet’s lines of dialog, and given how careful they usually were even with guest characters, perhaps they developed a more complex background for him than they gave us on screen. I’d love to know just how Jet learned to judge people and thereby deploy a strategy to get what he needs from them. It’s not at all dissimilar to young homeless people I’ve worked with, who have to learn how to survive - probably very much like Jet. It’s fascinating as well as tragic.
    Great stuff again Captain.

He showed Katara that she was stronger than she thought she was and encouraged her growth and independence. Between all the lies he believed in her and she was better for it. She gave him a safe place which anyone with out a family must have. When they were honest with each other it was good for both of them. He was the BEST side character in the series and he honestly deserves a lot more love, I mean his parents were burned alive by nasty firebenders so naturally he was consumed by vengeance and I think its fair, him involving innocent lives was hypocritical and wrong but every character make's mistakes and grows like Jet did since he decided to help Aang save Appa costing him his life. Azula is a fan favorite but she did horrible things too yet nobody criticizes her so people don't be biased because Jet is a GREAT character. Plus he had a cool design and cool hook swords in fact in the game I play called Shadow Fight 2 there's a weapon called "Shuang Gou" which is exactly like Jet's hooks swords.

      I think the tragic part is Jet died (ambiguously) without being fully redeemed. He let his hatred of the fire nation consume him and destroy his chance for a new life in Ba Sing Se, and even though he helped Aang and overcame his brainwashing, it's tragic he died without resolving his hatred for the fire nation. I think the reason people give Azula a pass, she was written to be pure evil, but clearly has some deep rooted metal issues that drove her to become the monster she is. I can't explain it properly, but there's a great video of the psychology of Azula by Hello Future Me if your interested.

    My biggest gripe with Jet is how his feature episode plays like the typical episode in a kids show where a cool new character appears that is "secretly evil". It's a trope that has been used so many times. But I do with they made him justice in Book 2, which they more or less do, but not really. You never get anything satisfying other than him "snapping out" of the brainwashing and taking a stone to the face and possibly dying (it is never confirmed in the show, but yeah).

    My all-time favorite episode is season 2 episode 11 "the desert". It really has everything from aang turning to the dark side, sokka being sokka and katara just tries to the best of her abilites (except development for zuko although the pai sho scene is amazing). It was a turning point for me as a viewer to see aang that angry and hopeless. I will never forget the look on toph's face as aang goes into the avatar state and sokka dragging her out of aang's side while katara just stands there... just perfect.

    Jet was the first time where Sokka actually felt older than Katara, and Jet really is a tragic character. He did everything he did against the Fire Nation only to be taken out by the Earth Kingdom, his own people

  • @dr.badguyreviews6785
    @dr.badguyreviews6785 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That whole X-Files comparison is really apt, because of The Great Divide.
    It's definitely one of the more frowned upon episodes of ATLA, especially by older fans, because when it was on TV, it was constantly played out of context and re-ran independently from the rest of the series. Not only did that make people sick of it, but it is genuinely one of the worst episodes of the series, for its character breaks, its barebones easy moral and its lack of much else.
    Now, I'm not saying putting it in a full run-through of the series makes it better... but it makes it weigh less, than if it was your only episode for the day, or god forbid, your introduction to the series.

    Jet is what team avatar could have become if they fully embraced blind hatred for the fire nation. He was as chill and carefree as team avatar in a calm setting. But Jet saw the fire nation on its own as an enemy. He would have definitely slaughtered Fire Lord Ozai. He tried on innocent villagers. Aang refused to killl that same person and struggled with it. Jet was a great villain, because he embodied an extrema that team avatar could have reached fairly quickly, if the right things went wrong.

    I think there is something so tragic about Jet's character(apart from the obvious). He grew up hating anything that had to do with the Fire Nation because they killed his family, and burned down his village, from what that one flashback showed us. He was just a teenager trying to live in world full of war with only his vengeance and anger to guide him and even when he made it to Ba Sing Se saying he had changed, that anger won over. And there is just something so tragic indeed about him swearing up and down that the Fire Nation is the true evil of his world and yet it was the Earth Kingdom that killed him.

    100% To me it is indeed the first solid, subtle, mature episode for the reasons you mention. Jet is one of many youth in the show who experiences war trauma, but his response is darker than others and totally human. He doesn't reappear until deep into season 2, but the themes of the cost of war and how victims respond (Ba Sing Se's suppression, General Fong's attempt to compel Aang into the Avatar State, etc.) we see throughout. This episode is a major part of the show's moral core.

    i often forget just how good book 1 can be. i often say that avatar really picks up in book 2, and it definitely does, but i feel that really degrades book 1. book 1 may have a lot more goofy episodic adventures, but i often forget it's groundwork with setting up the characters and fleshing out the world. looking back (it's been a whole YEAR, time whizzes by) since i first watched atla. i rarely rewatched book 1 episodes and the few that i did were the finale, the episodes in the northern water tribe leading up to it, and the storm and blue spirit. i remember watching the jet episode for the first time and loving the feel of the episode, especially with the autumn colors, the towering forests, orange sunlight streaming through the trees, the nature path, and the sense of adventure that i felt from the episode and watching these kids be free. i also loved how the show creators and writers made sokka the intelligent one here and expanded on his character other than being the comic relief.

    • @AndalusianPhilosopher
      @AndalusianPhilosopher ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jet is more tragic than both Zuko and Azula. As sad as it was to see Azulas downfall, it is nowhere near as terrible as Jets demise. Jet was a good kid. He cared for his group. It is understandable why he was the way he was. He lost everything and ended up all alone in the world, and started from nothing. Even more heartbreaking is revelation in the rift comic trilogy that the group responsible for destroying Jets village Rough Rhinos are not facing any consequence and instead hired as a security for the Earthen Fire refinery which will evolve eventually into Republic City. I do hope Rough Rhinos will face trial for war crimes at some point.

    • @AndalusianPhilosopher
      @AndalusianPhilosopher ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FreshZCORD Sadly this is how elites of imperialist states historically viewed anyone who opposes them. It is not just Azula but the mentality of the Fire Nation Elites. Let us not forget that Fire Nation did wipe out the Air Nomads, and reduced the southern water tribe to a small village. Fire Nation brought the Kataras home to near extinction. It is not just one single individual here. If not Azula someone else would have advised this. And notice that much of the people in the meeting room cheered on this plan.
      Also Zuko tried to commit genocide when he sent an assassin after Aang. As long as Aang was alive the air nomad people can be brought back. If in one of those encounters combustion man succeeded then all of the hope for the Air nomands would have died. And it was selfish and evil act. Zuko has seen what the war did to people, and he knew his sister lied to him in the past. And yet he still chose consciously to be in his fathers good graces.

    Jet and Katara are alike in that they're both leaders, both confident, proactive, charismatic and they're both fighters. They have both experienced losing a parent/parents and they both want to take revenge on the fire nation. Initially, you feel sympathy for Jet just like you do with Katara and Sokka. Obviously, the difference with Jet is that he took his revenge to the extreme, where he was so lazer focused on getting his revenge that he ended up being as corrupt and wicked as the fire nation by wanting to destroy that innocent village. I think this is where a lot of people lose sympathy for him. I think Jet is misunderstood in a lot of ways. If he just had the support and guidance like Katara and Sokka, imagine what kind of man he would have become. This made his death even more tragic for me. I appreciate that the creators of the show decided to have this character as he was integral for the 3 main characters to learn. It's a shame how people can experience the same things but turn out completely different. It's also ironic that the city he was trying to protect killed him and not by the fire nation
