Thanks for making this video. Was looking for something like this a week ago. Personally I feel like the leather quality of the new cases aren’t as good as they were on previous iphone cases
Glad I could provide more insight to you! I have been hearing a lot of people mention they think the quality has changed. Could you possibly explain how exactly the quality has changed? I have only been using the Apple leather cases for a few years so I'm not really well-versed in their long term quality.
@@Auto-Technica on Apples website, the product details for the mag safe leather wallet say European leather, for the leather case for iPhone 12 series they just say high quality leather, and for iphone 11 series cases it says finished European leather. And form the second I got the iPhone 12 Pro leather case in my hands, it felt more plastic. I just started TH-cam, that why i know this stuff. LOL
I have a blue leather case on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. The only complaint I have is it adds a lot of weight still I do love it. I keep switching between leather and esr clear case (which is very light weight)
That sounds like a good combo to be working with! I do agree that the leather case does add more bulk, but I've found that even without a case the 12 Pro Max is just super bulky.
I got impatient for my patina, so I bought a magic eraser. Used it dry. I would suggest rubbing areas that aren’t patina’ing evenly. The eraser sponge was really good at removing the protective coating without damaging the leather. Just a few days later and my phone is darkening nicely and more evenly.
I have the iPhone 12mini 128 Gb product red since july 2021 and i use the silicon black in the past and since yeaterday the leather black and is still new but i like the patina on yours! Stay well and stay safe
The prevailing theories seemed to be either that they changed the leather material completely or that since the phones are squared off now there isn't as much contact as there was with the curved design earlier causing slower aging. I think it's a combo of both.
This years cases will age just like the old ones, the only issue if you want to call it that is that this year they added a thicker coating than they did with the previous year cases to help make the patina more even. The case will patina, but will take longer due to the thicker coating. This was done due to the square design and with how we hold our phones. You can prematurely patina the case by using sandpaper and then applying a conditioner or coconut oil, however I like a more natural patina as that is what makes the case mine.
That's interesting, I've never heard of this before. If you don't mind me asking where did you get this info? I'd love to look into it myself! Ohh and I totally agree, natural aging the way to go, I'm happy to wait for it to happen on it's own even if takes time.
@@Auto-Technica More of a personal experiment, but there is a TH-camr (Kim Bertilsson) who does make a video about the leather on the new cases. He has some leather sheets that are coated and some that are raw. The way I know of the coating is due to me using conditioners and cleaning and polishing my shoes with good products. The easiest way to know if the leather has a coating is to apply some conditioner to the leather, and if it soaks it up, then the case will patina rather quickly, if it stays on the surface, then there is a coating preventing the patina from happening, the coating slowly fades away the more you use the phone, and due to the phone being square, we primarily will hold it on the edges and the back will remain more or less untouched.
@@iamthebesfromyou you mean leather conditioner? What do you mean by conditioner? Thank You. I have a damaged brand new apple leather case that is 1 hour old. Since it damaged, I can’t return so I’m gonna test out your theory. My first apple case and it went to the trash can 🥲
@@boogeymanw9643 yes, the one I use is expensive, but it is high quality for my shoes and it does have mink oil as well and when I use it on any of my shoes, they soak it up and the shoes look fantastic. Why did you throw away the case? I am sure that apple would have given you a new case in exchange as it comes with a 1 year warranty and if you have applecare, it also applies to the case.
It’s just such an uneven wear. Not surprising considering the angles. I have the 11 Pro with the brown leather case, well worn and it’s FAR more even. Thanks for the vid. Answered my question for when I grab the 12-S/13
Ya there’s something different about these newer apple leather cases. They don’t seem to patina as well as the older ones. It looks more scuffed up than that slow browning it should normally do. Not sure if it’s the shape of the case or the finish/quality of the leather? But this would require a custom patina job to get it to look nice.
A lot of people have commented on this video, and there are a lot of opposing views. There are many people that had the iPhone 5s/SE and said that the leather cases for those phones aged slowly as well, and it's because of the shape of the phones. Of all the theories, I'm inclined to believe the one the most. The flat edges make it so that you're touching the case in a much different way than you would a curved design. There's just more surface area your hand makes contact with imo.
@@Auto-Technica Ya true it’s gotta be the shape. It will just take a lot more time to patina. It’s like I wish I could speed up the process by customizing it but at the same time I enjoy the natural process more. Lolzzz.
Haha yeah same here! I would love a faster patina, but don't want to do it unnaturally. Lots of people have told me the methods they've used to speed up the process. While I find it very cool and interesting, it's not something I want to do to mine!
@@Auto-Technica To be truly honest I tried a few times with my older Apple leather cases and I didn’t like it. When it’s natural, it does take longer for me because I have dry hands, but the darkening, nicks and scuffs over time just tells a better story.
I only have mine last dec 23, 2020. Now I could see the circle mark from the magsafe charger and the darker shade of black on the sides too. Mine is a black leather one on my 12 promax.
The iPhone SE leather case had the same issue due to the flat edges. My current iPhone 11 Pro with its rounded edges fitted with the Apple leather case does not have that type of wear.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'm thinking I'll just let this case age naturally and see how it goes. I may try it out on an older leather case though!
I just bought the leather case, first time put it in my pocket, a big chunk of leagher chipped away (about an inch) and Apple refused to take it back because the product is damaged. Now I just lost $60. Should have went for Nomad (because finally The case covers the bottom so I’m super excited and bought Apple leather case first time). But so so disappointed by the quality 🙁
That is so crazy! I've used many leather cases from Apple over the years and I've never had leather chip away especially in a large chunk like that. It sucks you had such a poor experience. I wish I could offer some solution, but it definitely seems like you're in a terrible spot. :(

Hi, love the video! Just curious, which case are you liking the ageing more on? I'm stuck between the brown and blue, and you have had both for a while so I just wanted your opinion.
Thank you! I think the blue is the one to go for between the two, especially if you’ve got the blue phone. The brown is nice too. However it is taking a long time to patina and it is the more typical and boring choice. Can’t go wrong with either, but of the two my choice is the Baltic Blue.
@@smearguard6525 I would say the black is the best option if you would like the patina to be minimally noticeable. I like the Baltic Blue too if you're okay with a bit more noticable patina.
Im sure it has nothing to do with the quality of the leather, Is the shape of the case with square edges why it does not develope a nice uniform patina.
I feel inclined to say the same thing, but there are people who have noted the description of the leather has changed on the documentation. So far I think they're just aging slower more than anything. The quality of the material hasn't really been something I've noticed a change in. I guess we'll find out as time goes on!
@@Lg_tuber Ahh interesting. I personally don't care either way. I can barely tell real leather from fake leather, as long as it looks and feels good, I'm fine.

Truu..I was about to order as it looked kinda luxurious on the website but I'm not really digging this aging patterns. So wht color do u replace it with?
I think the reality is that the patina will get better with time, but the progress has been slow. If you're lot liking how it looks now I don't think you'll like it. I'd recommend going with the black leather case or maybe even a silicone one instead.
@@Auto-Technica I decided to go with the black leather case. The brown is nice but I can’t do the dirty edges :/. Maybe next year when they fix the issue
@@Auto-Technica got a replacement and it had the same issue. Did a drop test and the corners indeed came off completely when my phone fell face first. The case this year was built more for aesthetic than protection, I ended up returning mine and went with an aftermarket case
I think you need to add your own patina with a bit with oils and some scuffing supplied by you, i think the flat edge and the camera bumper reduces the flat contact of the larger area
A lot of people seem to be going that way. Just in the comment section of this video I've had many viewers comment on how they aged their case faster. I personally don't want to do that. I'd prefer the patina to be more natural, and I'm in no rush to be honest. I do agree that the flat edges and camera bump does reduce contact points which could be the reason for slower patina.
These new Apple leather cases are more like they're painted. They don't patina, the paint just wears off. The previous leather cases were actual natural leather that would age and patina beautifully. I returned my leather case for the 12 Pro when I realized it was just paint. Horrible, cheap product. Very disappointed with Apple here.
@@ronaldwow That was what I thought too. However, it seems that there is a big market for aged leather. It seems to be something that holds value in terms of luxury for many. I personally don't see it that way, but most buyers of leather products buy them because they are expecting it to patina and age naturally.
The patina is definitely not the way I was hoping it would be. However, I must say I have the Baltic Blue as well, and I honestly think that patina'd way better than the Saddle Brown.
@@Auto-Technica I just called apple they are aware of the cases. They are sending me a new replacement free of charge. I asked for a black leather case this time because my blue case seems like the color rubbed off.
@@rubenzamora3326 I'm glad they're taking care of you. That sounds like a reasonable resolution. Let me know what you think of the black once you've had some time to use it!
As a guy who has this same case and had the same case for my 11 pro, whatever they've done with the quality on this generation is not working. It's VERY uneven wear and just looks cheap. I personally think they're using less leather over whatever plastic makes up the structure on this generation. My 11 Pro case aged beautifully because it was thicker. I contacted support and they were having none of it. Guess it's back to Nomad for me!
This definitely seems like a common complaint amongst many customers. While I can't feel any difference in the quality, I definitely agree that a lack of even wear is a let down. I'm glad we just have other options like Nomad!
I checked out that video! Super cool! I personally don't feel like taking sandpaper to my phone, but I'm glad you've found a way to achieve those results faster.
I haven't had any issues with grip on mine. I think it will really depend on what type of grip you're looking for. This isn't supper grippy like the otter box or silicone cases, but isn't as slippery as just holding glass either. It's somewhere in the middle of those two.
some of the theories on why the iphone 12 leather case doesn't patina like the older cases are 1) the hard edge design creates a less even distribution of contact with your hands, and 2) apple applied some sort of protective finish on top of the leather that prevents it from absorbing the oils from your hands, thus preventing the aging process from happening. this is especially the case on parts of the phone that don't get enough wear and tear to remove this protective layer. some have suggested using sandpaper, and there are videos on how to it so that it patinas like the older leather cases, but i wouldn't blame for not wanting to take sandpaper to a new $60 case just to make sure it ages the way you like.
@@charlessuh5576 I think it’s the camera bump. The older leather cases were fully flat, thus picking up scratches and oils from tables, desks, etc. With the 12 series cases, when you lay the phone flat on a surface, only the plastic camera bump and bottom edge of the phone is making contact with most surfaces.
The leather this year (iPhone 12) is terrible compared to previous years, my others had a beautiful patina and felt great, my newest feels man made leather almost!
I've heard this complaint a lot! A good response I've heard is that this case is aging different because of the sides. The older phones had much more curved edges which gave you hand a much different grip on the case causing a vastly different patina. I'm not sure if that's the reason or not. It's just another way to look at it.
@@MobileTechPoint I love a good patina but this isn't it. Apple leather ages unevenly and terribly. I remember this being the case on my iPhone X leather case and it still seems to be here.
Looks horrible! Unfortunately I got 3 leather cases this year and really disappointed! Quality so downgraded the worst out of all previous years! Purchased bullstrap leather case in Siena - saddle brown color
I can totally understand why you'd be disappointed! I just looked at the Bullstrap Siena case and I really liked the color. I just wish they had MagSafe built in too, given the fact that they're just as expensive as the Apple cases.
Your phone look like this after a month of using it? Smh 🤦🏽♀️ are you a construction worker or a mechanic? I have the same case and had it for 3 months I use it everyday all day gym etc… I am not buying this review on this case.
I really don't think so. The pandemic has made it so that I wash my hands at least 10-15 times a day. So the chances of greasy/oily hands affecting the patina don't really check out.
Yeah, I understand. I would like for the look to be different as well. Hopefully with time as it patina's more evenly it looks better, but at the current state it's not the greatest look.
Don’t buy an apple case for iPhone 12. This guy is trying to convince you to buy trust me the patina looks uglier the older it gets. It looks more like a gunk instead of a nice blending patina.
I'm not convincing anyone to buy anything. In fact this video has probably stopped so many people from buying the case. Just look through the other comments. Also, just because you don't like something doesn't mean someone else won't.
@@Auto-Technica wait a minute you're calling it a nice patina in your video. You also said you would like it better as it ages. Nope, you're misleading😂😂😂.

Same issue,it’s turning into black on the sides n edges. Its annoying now,n looks dirty after investing 65$(in India)
Yeah, it's just the nature of leather. I was shocked the first time I bought one too. It's actually supposed to change colors and "age".
@@Auto-Technica wats the point of costing 65$ then
@@ronaldwow That was what I thought too. However, it seems that there is a big market for aged leather. It seems to be something that holds value in terms of luxury for many. I personally don't see it that way, but most buyers of leather products buy them because they are expecting it to patina and age naturally.
I got the same case with my phone and mine looks like i had it for a year lmaoo
Haha that's crazy... Are you liking the way it's looking though?
@@Auto-Technica yea i like it but I think im gonna end up getting another one
@@Ogbris3 gotcha! going to keep the same color or go for another one?
Link to the wallpaper please!
It's a version of MKBHD's Icons! I don't remember the source, but here's the link from my library: photos.app.goo.gl/iKDanPZ5FdChSs5b7
@@Auto-Technica thank you!
@@mustajabzuberi4916 You're welcome! :)
In these cases patina is horrible. My blue case looks ugly.
Good job bro. U kept both phones?
Thank you! I did keep both phones, I really like both of them.
My case was doing the same, so I made a video on how to ”correct” the patina hehe 😅
I checked out that video! Super cool! I personally don't feel like taking sandpaper to my phone, but I'm glad you've found a way to achieve those results faster.
Thanks! I suspect that the patina will stay just at the edges long after iPhone 12s/13 is released 😂. Thats why I took sandpaper!
I dropped a Sub just so you know! You deserv more subs man😊.
@@KimBertilsson haha that makes sense, let's see just how long it takes naturally.
@@KimBertilsson I really appreciate the support! :)
How has the grip changed? I just got a letter case and it’s slippery as heck.
I haven't had any issues with grip on mine. I think it will really depend on what type of grip you're looking for. This isn't supper grippy like the otter box or silicone cases, but isn't as slippery as just holding glass either. It's somewhere in the middle of those two.
Very cool
Thank you!
It almost looks like its damage and the leather peeled off.
Definitely not the case! It is just starting to age in very particular spots, once it ages more uniformly it'll look better I think.
It looks like it’s scuffing.
If I were Apple I would add metal edges so that this doesn't happen again.
in this pandemic situation,, we have to clean our case more often..the question is ,,if is possible with this case ??
Yeah, no worries at all. You can clean it as much as you want. Just don't use harsh chemicals and you'll be fine.
This is keeping me from getting the new phone, I hate how it patinas
some of the theories on why the iphone 12 leather case doesn't patina like the older cases are 1) the hard edge design creates a less even distribution of contact with your hands, and 2) apple applied some sort of protective finish on top of the leather that prevents it from absorbing the oils from your hands, thus preventing the aging process from happening. this is especially the case on parts of the phone that don't get enough wear and tear to remove this protective layer. some have suggested using sandpaper, and there are videos on how to it so that it patinas like the older leather cases, but i wouldn't blame for not wanting to take sandpaper to a new $60 case just to make sure it ages the way you like.
@@charlessuh5576 if mine ends up like this i think ill just try sanding it and doing a full DIY patina. i hate how uneven this year’s case patinas
The old cases has much better base colour too compared to this puke brown I agree
This really looks like my 5s I used like 4 years ago
That's the same thing I thought when I first used the phone! So similar to the 5s.
Yə§
it may caused by the strong coating. looking too plasticky 😅 CMIIW. and that’s why I LOVE NOMAD 🎉🎶🙋🏻♂️➿🤎
Thanks for the video. Looks terrible IMO. Will not be dropping $80+tax on this.
Glad I was able to help. :)
More it deteriorates more fun it is to use. That’s why people buy a leather case my friend
@@MobileTechPoint I love a good patina but this isn't it. Apple leather ages unevenly and terribly. I remember this being the case on my iPhone X leather case and it still seems to be here.
I sadly did fuckkkk
The iPhone 7 Plus apple leather case was a different Material and was way better
A lot of people have said the same thing! It's very interesting that so many people seem to have the same observation.
My leather cases still look new after a year
That's crazy! Mine always start to age after a few months of use. Do you have an original Apple case or is it third party?
@@Auto-Technica original, I take care of them
@@BevinBevin Gotcha! :)
this guy’s name is Auto Technica he works on cars, filthy hands, filthy case
well on my opinion I don't like how looks my case now 60 dollars and looks dirty
That's fair enough! Definitely not going to be up to everyones liking.
My case has the worst leather quality I’ve ever experienced
Patinaing? 🤯
I use fake apple leather cases and that lasts as new even after 6 months lmao.
That's crazy! Where do you even find these fake cases haha? Can you share a link, I'd love to check it out.
@@Auto-Technica they arent available online maybe check at aliexpress i got it from delhi ,india.

Nice patina? It looks pretty nasty. But thanks, at least I know to not buy leather case for 12...
I have very very very wrong idea of leather cases. This vid enlighten me NOT TO BUY. Thanks.
shit quality , i would go for normad cases for the leather. thanks for the video
it's fucking ugly & disgusting as hell. sillicone one is the way to go. or caseless.
Your phone look like this after a month of using it? Smh 🤦🏽♀️ are you a construction worker or a mechanic? I have the same case and had it for 3 months I use it everyday all day gym etc… I am not buying this review on this case.
Your hands just too greesy
I really don't think so. The pandemic has made it so that I wash my hands at least 10-15 times a day. So the chances of greasy/oily hands affecting the patina don't really check out.
Thats not the look I want man.. this is bad looking old case
I said I will like it more as it ages. If it wasn’t clear let me make it, I don’t like the current state but hoping as time goes on the patina gets better.
Plus I am entitled to my take on this. I don’t think my opinion is misleading in any way. The comments from other people prove it.

Such a a bad patina
The patina is midway through the process. I do agree that in its current state it doesn't look to good. I'm hoping it gets better with time.
A BBC Nl kill
That looks terrible
Ewww
How can you like the case more if it ages? That’s makes 0 sense. This case is trash do not buy.
That's kinda the entire point of patina. Leather ages, and when it ages a certain way it looks pretty cool.
