So glad to see it reprinted in a set
The Council of Four can conceivably draw you 4 cards and make you 4 2/2 Knights per turn cycle without giving your opponents any benefits, because they want to be drawing cards and playing more than a single spell on their turn anyway! Mitch instantly thought Howling Mine effects and then disregarded this card.
Slotting Council of Four into my Raffine deck, because drawing cards is the best part of Magic and the incidental 2/2 tokens will give me more Connive triggers 👌🏻
I'm looking at it for my shorikai deck too
I thought the same thing...then realized this is an analysis of Council of Four as a commander. Not as a card that slots into commander decks. And as a commander it doesnt seem great.
@@michaedove3562 even with that in mind I still think Council of Four should be bumped up a tier. Unlike Gluntch, where you can’t avoid helping your opponents, Council of Four does exactly what the flavor text says; puts a price on ambition. Run it as a control deck and now it’s one of few commanders that benefits when your opponents try to pull ahead, and also stops them at the same time. There’s definitely better control commanders out there in UW (Taigam… Grand Arbiter… I could go on) but the council is actively benefiting from your opponents trying to win in a way few other commanders do
@@doors54 Yeah, I played him at a draft and he was pretty amazing...in draft. I understand the point. But I think its arguing about something relatively trivial (mid tier versus lowest tier). I certainly wouldnt use him as a build around.
I thought the exact same thing. This is a pretty okay commander option
Got to participate on the Pre-release yesterday, and the player next to me had Rilsa as his commander. Dude SPEEDRAN the dungeon and was swinging wildly, while the other players had only gotten into the Undercity.
Oh god
I built my wife a Tasha deck. I made more of a "What's your's is mine" deck. Cards like Thief of Sanity, Xanathar, etc. She still gets the "When you cast a spell you don't own" trigger for her Demon tokens. Plus a steal/mill sub-theme makes it easier to take people's instants & sorceries out of their graveyards with Tasha, among other things with other cards. Then plenty of token generators and several Walls to help defend Tasha helps out a bunch. A few permanent bounce spells to save Tasha, or even slow her opponents have been beneficial. She loves the deck, but obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion. I was just happy with how the deck runs because it's done pretty well so far. Could use some improvements, but I'd say it's roughly about a 7 in power where it's at.
Would love to see a most powerful commander/background combos tier list
Baelthor and raised by giants is gonna be my deck. Basically just goad the whole table all times. Chill while your opponents kill each other. Play repercussions and damage doublers so your opponents will take damage even if they deploy blockers after combat.
I think Gale waterdeep prodigy and scion of halaster is easily the best Commander/Background combination in term of powerlevel
And a budget/expensive combo tier list
Abdbel Adrian and far traveler is a great blink combo Deck. Mono white, super cheap to build, and an you can lock your opponents completely out of combat with Stone Horn dignitary
I run a Ganax + Feywild Visitor deck that is bonkers
Have to say, Faldorn is going to "flood the board" with wolves much quicker and easier than Cadira can generate bunnies. Can trigger more than once per turn, during any player's turn vs. possibly once on your combat step. The bun bun token is super cute though, maybe worth b-tier...
I mean at least double strike can speed bunny girl up a lot
Agree. Love that she has discard added too. Can play in a few madness cards, or at least have Containment Construct to double up on exile play. Even better if you decide to break the bank on a doubling season.
Faldorn needs to be built entirely around playing from exile to get the most out of her, Cadira functions with even mild token support. Though I do agree Faldorn has a much higher ceiling if you put in the effort. It's a shame the colors don't line up to play them together.
I think that people are forgetting just how much foundation there is for exile casting.
Madness, cascade, foretell, suspend, rebound, and red already has it in spades. Couple this with green ramp and wolf/token support and it's going to get out of control very quickly.
@@ikubefansubs Indeed. Gonna tune this Like I did Prosper. Going to have a legion of wolves before my opponents can even hope to stabilize.
You should do a year in review to see how your rankings held up against the meta/EDH rankings for each set, it would make for an interesting video to see how you under/overestimated certain cards.
I'd be curious to see this; Tasha stood out as being underrated. For some reason in the review we forget that creatures, enchantments etc are also spells, so you're not just limited to "powerful instant/sorceries"
@20:37 Correction for Raphael: he read "...when a creature CARD was put into the graveyeard..." -- That does not include tokens, tokens are not considered cards, so tokens dont replace themselves when sacrificed.
111.6 A token is subject to anything that affects permanents in general or that affects the token’s card type or subtype. A token isn’t a card (even if represented by a card that has a Magic back or that came from a Magic booster pack).
Coming back to this video after playing Baldur’s Gate 3 to see who I recognize. Definitely gonna make that Astarion deck 😅
I know this is old news but I wanted to bring something up about Commander Liara Portyr. Extra combats allow you to stack cost reduction and not just the cards you exile with her effect.
I bought a prerelease pack from my local card shop today, and pulled Miirym, and immediately put together a deck around him today. For now he's not close to his fill potential yet since I don't have congress and blink spells yet, but his token copies are great!
N’Gathrod pulls some of the most insane shit ever - I can’t believe you’ve only got him in C tier
Wayfarer's Bauble was definitely a mythic common at my LGS this prerelease. I opened two boxes and two kits and didn't pull a single one. Across the 15 boxes and numerous kits, only three copies were opened at the store.
Just shows ya how powerful it is
I got two in one draft last night. So just a weird set of boxes.
Council of Four seems like a solid card draw engine even without making it like a group hug deck. It's a good blocker and probably won't get removed right away.
They were my prerelease commander, and I can confirm they’re solid. I absolutely drowned my opponents in value and murdered them in Knights!
It wasn't my commander but I did have it in my prereless deck and it does work
I absolutely agree with your assessment of neera. that being said im head over heels for her anyway and i know im gonna have SO much fun tinkering and optimizing my list to make up for her shortcomings.
Where would you place Karlach, Fury of Avernus? Don't think I saw her on this list.
One thing I think a lot of people are overlooking:
Myrkul is in the colors for Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Primal Vigor, AND Anointed Procession. That means token copies can be made to the 4th power.
Not only that, but Myrkul says that they lose all other card types. "Legendary" is a card type. You can have 16 copies of a legendary creature, as a token enchantment.
I asked a judge about this on Friday and they said that Legendary is a Supertype, so the token would remain legendary. Still an insanely powerful effect though, even with that being the case.
animate all my lands. Armageddon. my lands return as enchantments
@@GaZZuM Eh, there are ways to get around the legend rule.
Would love to see Miirym, sentinel wyrm built budget. Found them along with some ancient dragons in a sealed draft would be great to see you build them :)
I got him and 2 times earthquake dragon in prerelease
When you talked about Raphael, fiendish Savior, you mention that you could sac a token to create another one. However, the text says "... if a creature card was put int your graveyard..."
A token is not a creature card, right?
Good question! Creature tokens do technically hit your graveyard - it’s a somewhat strange magic rule because the token doesn’t stay there but it works
Wasn't sure neither but I check (108.2b) Tokens are not technically cards, so they might not trigger Raphael.
@@TheCommandersQuarters tokens are not cards. So sadly this doesn't work since the text specifies creature card.
It's true, it would count as a creature dying, but the token is not a card and does not trigger Raphael.
@@TheCommandersQuarters it is a creature, but its not a creature CARD. it does not work
Playing Minthara at prerelease, she is so incredible strong. Myriad synergieses so well with her
I’m glad to see someone else thought of this. I happened to get her and a blade of selves and immediately saw potential. Gonna be making a myriad tokens deck with her
No episode on the Commanders with backgrounds?
baba is probably the most underrated commander in this list, not only can you get tremedous value but also works amazingly with an aristocrat subtheme
reanimaton and cards like thorn bite staff and illusionist bracers can drain your opponents to death and not to mention because of all that card draw your hand will always be full and you will almost always have an answer to anything
Firkraag is my favorite from this set. Super unique, goad games be wild 👀
Why no second video with background commanders? Or am I just not seeing it when I look for it?
A lot of new commanders up here. I really like Raphael as a fiendish tribal commander but the Legendary that I want yo play with the is Firkraag.
Dragon goad with a politics style looks like a fun deck.
Thanks for the content, Mitch.
Korlessa and Lozhan are not commanders themselves, but are more support for a dragon commander, especially Myriim. I had to play against a Myriim deck in a BLD league. Both of those were in there as support, and it was a tough deck to play against.
EDIT: Also Lozhan can't target commanders, but it can target PLAYERS. And player removal is the best form of commander removal.
Damnit, Eddie!
Tasha is probably at least a B tier, her plus is primarily for card advantage, the rest of the deck is dedicated to stealing cards from your opponents in other ways.
Edit 2: I saw Minthara when she was first spoiled, but got to play with her in a prerelease last night and ooooh man. Oh man. She is so strong, it's not even funny. A persistent anthem effect that turns even your little cantrip creatures into massive beaters is huge game.
I also think Tasha is at least b tier, especially since even removed as long as she comes back you can just -3 her and cast a free spell and get a creature, plus there are so many great steal cards in the format I feel she can do a lot
Fully agree. Build around the passive, not her loyalty abilities.
I agree that tasha was under ranked here, just built a deck around Tasha, and it looks solid atm since I need to do some more tweeking on it. Glad to build it, both for lore reason(one of my favorite dnd characters and her are connected), and its my first stealing deck, and my first "control" deck.
today is the first physical game for it in my hands too!
I pulled Miirym as my Promo and had a pretty powerful board most of the prerelease commander game after casting her on turn 4.
I did the same yesterday at prerelease. Made a full on Dragon tribal.
Once I was double casting Tiamats Fanatics with Miirym though, I was basically the tables enemy no 1, lol.
Commander Draft is pretty fun ngl
Raphael's creature token trigger requires a creature *CARD* be put in to your graveyard. You can't sac a token to create a token with it because tokens aren't cards.
6:49, you need to pay attention to how it says whenever A PLAYER, this doesn’t limit too much when you have stuff like Teferi’s ageless insight or any other card draw doubling permanents, along with howling mine, you can have yourself draw up to 12 cards per turn which would go great with wincons like Thassa’s Oracle
Miirym with Orvar in the 99 and a bunch of blink and clone instants and sorceries!!!! (With supporting worldly tutor effects of course!)
They’ll trigger twice since you’ll have a SECOND Orvar!!!!
Forget a second Orvar, you can use Orvar's ability to target itself and get even more. Even better, use clones with changeling to enter as copies of Miirym and get exponentially more copies each time!
19:20 On the one hand, I like the idea of swarming the field with bunnies. But on the other hand, I’ve seen the infamous scene from Re-Zero, so I can’t shake the idea of Casira summoning *those* rabbits in particular. If I ever build this deck, I’m definitely making custom Rabbit tokens with the Re-Zero rabbits for the artwork. Just to see how people react.
Let's not forget the Miirym is bonkers in the 99. Want to clone the Ur-Dragon or Skittles? Well you can! This guy is easily going to go above budget. Like $20 at least.
I randomly bought a single set booster from this set a month or so ago and got zevlor etched foil, alaundo showcase art and myrkul all in a single pack.
Since Raphiel make's 1/1 devils when a creature card enters your graveyard, using creatures with cycling works wonders. Also since the tokens are devils they end up being 2/2 when he's on the field that can trade with most 3 toughness creatures while giving you life as chump blockers. In B/R there are so many creatures (devils that do damage upon death come to mind) that synergize with him by having death triggers and cards that have sacrificing as part of the cost.
Raggadragga also brings to the table Land Animation and other forms of mana abilities, such as that of a treasure creature or even something like an Eldrazi Scion (outside of CLB but still). Also enables a couple of cheeky Buyback infinites, which I have actually managed to pull off in a game by infinitely casting Wurmcalling for 7.
I loved his concept, but Raggadragga's biggest drawback is how hard it is for dork decks to recover from globals. You invest too much too early, and if you don't manage to draw those cards back... RIP. I'm eager to try him on duel though.
@@manswine1252 I end up using lots of cheap protection interaction to guard my guys, probably need even more but that usually helps. You can also fall back onto land animation too if you really need to. I've been building him for prototyping and it's performed really well thus far.
I pulled miirym my first pack of my first prerelease and he has been my favorite of the set since
Eliminster for me is a bit confusing, his first block of text tells me he wants to cheat on the cost of big spells like Alrund's Epiphany or Apex of Power and scrying spells to enable that.
But his -3 exiles those big spells with no way of casting them or getting them back and turns them into basically useless 1/1 birds.
He doesn't seem to have a coherent strategy that he pushes the player toward.
Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher is the one I'm looking most forward to. I'm thinking an Azorius Levelup/Equipment deck w/ Fortell support and a few mana filters to get around the not from hand drawback of the potentially obscene amount of mana I'll produce
Neera can allow you to pull cards from your graveyard with Gale back into your library. I was looking to use adventure cards with gale, neera, and lozhan synergizing, but adventure sorceries and instants don't have the card type so can't be pulled by Gale from the graveyard. I may still build it for fun though, especially since a number of the dragons are ALSO adventure cards, double dipping with Lozhan.
The thing about Nine Fingers Keen is that I doubt that we will get new gates outside of commander sets. It would not be hard to modify amulett titan into a mazes end modern Deck with the new gates, but I think they printed these in a commander set on purpose.
Another one got printer in Dominaria just to contradict you 🙂
@@user-vg6sg7kh1q yes. I saw this. I am extremely happy. This was very fast new support for the deck and I really didn't expect that when writing this comment two months ago
6:30 - I have a sneaking suspicion you can abuse those effects by YOU being the player who draws their second card or cast their second spell....I mean building a cherrios deck? single mana cards that scry 1?
Probably C tier though....
Already see plenty of potential this set, look forward to seeing what you’ve got lined up here
At the first prerelease for this set I went to I ran kagha and won the first pod and lasted until the overtime round at the winners table. With the right combination of backgrounds she's very powerful, I was constantly self milling and beefing her up with creatures in the graveyard
man so many of these commanders look awesome but I'm just so excited about combos! can't wait to see the vid
Does zevlor works with Angelos casualty ability?? To copy it once more?
Lozhan with flash and a bunch of high cost etb dragons equals destroy most targets, control your opponents, and make everything that can stop your flying scaledogs not an issue, throw in crimson dragon orb, and suddenly with enough mana you are dishing out lethal flying damage with just 2 spell casts
This is one of my favorite draft set. If I can find this set for a discount I immediately grab it if I can
Congrats on almost 250k subs!
I’m basically brand new to magic and even newer to commander having just played my first game of it 3 days ago and I pulled minthara and Astarion as well as 3 wayfarers bauble which people keep telling me is super good but I don’t quite understand why. Also it seemed like you forgot a commander? The game I played where I pulled those cards I actually pulled another card “shadowheart, dark justicar” which is definitely a commander as it says to choose a background but I didn’t see that card on the tier list even though it’s a commander and it’s the one I used in my deck. Just wondering if I’m missing something here or??
Hmm...Lozhan's ability says specifically that it's Lozhan dealing damage when it triggers, so does that work with deathtouch or the poison/-1-1 counter -thingy?
Yup
I have been building around Myrkul and I am LOVING this god. Imagine him + Populate + effects that grab and sac your opponents cards.
Also, remember that the helm lets you make non-legendary copies of it so you can have back ups of him
@@Razdasoldier the tokens would still be legendary, because legendary is a supertype, not a card type, so they wouldn't lose their legendary status
@@joedoe7572 helm of the hosts over rules that making non legendary copies
@@Razdasoldier my bad, I misread that. I thought you meant he, Myrkul, makes non legendary copies. Didn't realize you said Helm. That's pretty cool, but then again, Helm of the Host with basically anything is pretty insane
@@joedoe7572 Yes, I understand there are many niche combos. Like if you make a copy of Myrkul with helm and kill the O.G. then it gets exiled for an enchantment copy then goes back to the command zone. You never lost it and have a harder to kill copy
Faldron is impulse draw the commander and that's pretty cool! Most impulse draw is like 1 or 2 mana, and it's in green. Plus you have all the wolf synergy, pretty cool imo
I don't understand why some of the cards for the golden pig are some we seen for the golden toilet? Did someone else make the list?
I played Korlessa in draft yesterday and I gotta say, she absolutely stomps. I'm kind of curious as to how she can do in constructed Commander.
Really? I had the opposite experience
Miirym and Majestic Genesis saved my second round match on prerelease. So amazing. So many dragons.
Eddie it is ALL YOUR fault!! I don't know why but I'm a sheep and this sounded like fun
Well I got at least 2 A tier commanders from my prerelease kit. Cant wat to see what Mitch thinks about the one with backgrounds
Great video! I think people are sleeping on Kagha. If you setup like Oriq loremage or like Entomb to mill good cards directly from the deck, Angel of suffering, cemetery tampering, carrion grub, gorging vulture, dread summons some good self mill support instant/sorcery enchantments or like price of fame,!perpetual timepiece ect. I think this card is like potentially A tier. Im just listing a few ideas! Im thinking of it as kind of a mini Meren clan of nel toth maybe? That can also ramp and Golgari is really good at these type of things imo.
Great breakdown, interested to see the Background video!
Played Duke Ulder Ravengard this weekend and it was quite powerful... most fun thing I did is speed run the undercity with take the initiative etb creatures like that 3/6 vigilance... completed the dungeon 3 times in the same game!!!
I have an excelent Klauth deck, nut I had to do this Miirym deck... this commander is insane and I also have Parallel Lives and Panharmonicon. I will test this deck tomorrow in a Magic Store.
Nice closing song!
Really interested to see the top spots!!
that list did age like old cheese XD
ive built a deck around Rilsa and its more powerful than it seems when using copy spells and stuff like conjurers closet to get initiative over and over again
Are these all only from the new decks coming out?
Karlach, Fury of Avernus?
She went to Face-Stomp Central in my prerelease, combined with some of the dragons and the Phoenix and Descent into Avernus just for pure rollicking pain.
I’m Bad At Draft™️ and not great at commander or Magic in general despite decades of play and she sailed me to victory.
Hi Eddie, im missing Karlach - something Avernus (I only have the alternatie art and cant read it ) ;)
I was so lucky to draft Jon Irenicus. I’m making a full deck of him asap!
Will you do a ranking for the mono coloured commanders?
At our prerelease, I ran my pod to death with the F-tier Gut, True Soul Zealot and a treasure deck. Not a EDH commander but maybe good in the 99
I played Granax, Astral Hunter along with Flaming Flames. It was alright, being able to attack my opponents from time to time, but I lost first because I'm terrible at building decks from scratch...
These S-Tier commanders are insane. Already thinking Zevlor + Electrodominance + something else crazy in the mid-late game.
The only one I disagree with is the horror tribal precon I think that deck has a lot of potential
When can we expect the video ranking the background commanders?
So with Nine Fingers Keen, I thought that you were allowed to play lands even if they make colors outside of your commanders colors? So you could run the full set of gates. Is that incorrect?
That's incorrect. Although lands are colorless, if they produce mana of a certain colour, then that is part of their colour identity. What you're thinking of is fetch lands, where it says the name of the type of land it's fetching, but doesn't have the color itself; e.g. you can play a fetch land that searches for a plains or a swamp in a mono-white deck or a black-red deck
@@joedoe7572 Ok, yes. That's exactly what I was thinking about. Thanks for the clarification.
Made myself an alaundo deck and will say it is very good with enough untap and way to protect him. I even had seed seedborn muse out and was almost playing during my friend's turns and will admit felt kinda bad because I am sure no one enjoys playing at the same time as someone else.
Raphael fiendish savior shouldnt Trigger on creature Tokens. Because the Trigger checks after a creature card Hits the graveyard. In the case of Tokens it shouldnt have a legal target to Trigger off.
The commanders ive been having most fun with are Bane, Lord of Darkness, Mazzy, Trueswords paladin, Jan Jensen, very fun commanders
you should try baba lysaga, shes hella underated ngl
@@aquilesbeizaga3176 Ive been considering her actually, she does look fun.
I feel like c and d level commanders are better in the 99 then on their own
Well put together! 5⭐
Raggadragga is also great with turning your lands into creatures also
what about Wilson as commander? i think it is a nice Voltron commander
Love what you do. Many thanks for amazing content
For Firkraag, am I reading that right? If I attack with 3 dragons can I goad 3 creatures?
No he can only goad one creature per player. Honestly though that’s nothing compared to the second part of his card that lets him draw cards and buff himself. I built a goblin tribal with splashes of dragons and the whole deck focuses on forcing my own units to attack and a bunch of unblockable and Firkraag draws SO many cards and gets huge. It’s been a blast.
Hey :-) I wish that you look at commander cards from the perspective of a two-headed giant player. This format is also often played. In this case is "Gluntch" a good support commander, for example.
Can't you just target yourself? Am I missing something?
Mitch, I’ll show you how terrifying Gluntch can be. Ever played against a good Shadrix player before? Gluntch is the next level.
Do I sense a Close Quarter's episode with a fan?
@@joedoe7572 I can dream
@Commander's Quarters !
I actually have a pretty nuts Gluntch dexk where I just try and buff him up as much as possible. It is hilariously stupid.
Im triggered Capt. Davy Jones is really spicy, he takes the exile and play your opponents cards to a whole another level
The council of four gives you a card advantage even on your own turn smh and even with this I believe if this is your commander you are still get that second spell even after using a one mana during your turn.
From my experience, the party precon commander is insane. It doesn't sound powerful on paper, but it gets wild easily
Like, at least b tier imo. Only limit is it's orzhov and not a three color like it should have been imo. Adding red would have been insane
I think the ability to be the one person no one want to kill at the table is underrated in commander, especially limited. Glunch is decent in limited imo.
That's true. It's a good commander to survive in the table. Also you can have lot of protection with differents kind of fogs i think. Not bad
Yea i don’t play to be the threat, i like the lowkey commanders who don’t attack alot of attention
@@mibbzx1493 can u give me some examples about anothar commanders that goes on that way too? Im interested on that kind
@@C3ss95 yea sure. I think you’ll probably like ninjas/rouges then. Anowan the ruin thief i can suggest if you want to build a sneaky style deck. Also i can suggest Prosper tome-bound and evelyn the covetous is you’re into vampire because they drain their life and you gain life back. It really depends on your playstyle tbh im not sure what type of player you are. But all 3 of them i recommend and are very fun to play with/against.
Very poor assessment of Raggadragga. They'll consistently go under your opponents and can start chaining off huge spells before midgame. Easy s tier.
Not everyday you hear the phrase "hamster reliant for card draw"
I don't fully understand your argument for putting The Council of Four in the D-tier. In most commander games I play, players often times draw more than 1 card or play more than 1 spell in a turn without any (active) help from me anyway - and the card includes yourself aswell. So anything that only draws you a card automatically adds an additional card draw if you play it during your turn, anytime any other player casts something like a Deadly Dispute, you draw a card. Opponent ignored 2 Rhystic Study triggers from another opponent - you feel less bad because you also draw a card. And that is not to mention spell-slinger decks that routinely play 2+ spells a turn, which happens regularly in the late game anyway for other decks - that can make you quite a lot of knights.
I got Gorion at my prerelease, sadly I didn't draw many adventure stuff so I tried to go a Myriad route plus iron mastiff. Myriam is nuts tho, got stomped.
Council of Four could see use with Anvil of Bogardan. Minimize the benefits for the opponent, and maximize the benefit for you.
I think you're on point with your list except for Jan Jansen. Treasure as a theme is extremely prevalent right now, especially when you have access to white. Having haste, ramping, and comboing off 4 CMC cards make him as fast as a deck can be before reaching a competitive level. Although most people are building him artifact tribal, IMO that's his worst version. He generates far too much value in aristocrats, and can even go for land destruction if you don't mind the grief. I'd put him on high A or even S tier. Don't sleep on him!
Bhaal is exactly where I like my commanders. Middle of the road power wise with a weird ability for everyone to keep in the back of their minds. I love that the ability really blows up a political “do nice things for everyone” player by just making him swing over and over again.
