    Learn how to play Paint it Black, as performed by The Rolling Stones released as part of the Aftermath album in 1966. The song features a great interplay between guitar and sitar, likely played by Keith Richards and Brian Jones respectively.
    The lesson covers the primary riff, the chords throughout, and a great scale you can use to solo over the outro section of the song. Super fun to do if you play this live.

    "If you're working too hard, it's not Rock and Roll! ". Gonna steal that one 😁👍. Strapping in for another musicology and technique lesson on one of the Stones' greats, with its dark feel and Brian's sitar innovation. One that still features in so many soundtracks eg the surreal scene in Westworld S2E5. Rock on! 🤘

    Great lesson - the scale you're playing is called a harmonic minor. It is mysterious and a perfect fit here!

    • @user-qc4ze4hb6l
      @user-qc4ze4hb6l 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The lower octave is Em harmonic, the upper octave is natural minor.

  • @denmar355
    @denmar355 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    That is close to a Phrygian mode. One note different. The minor second (A to A#) is what makes the sound.

    • @captaincrankysdock9730
      @captaincrankysdock9730 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The harmonic minor scale corresponds directly to the Phrygian Dominant scale. (Think "White Rabbit"). In Phrygian the I chord is major, while the ii chord is minor. In Phrygian dominant the II chord is major. The classic example of this is the "Andalusian Cadence".(often seen as Am > G > F > E (major)).
      A harmonic minor.....A B C D E F >G# A
      E Phrygian dominant..............E F >G# A B C D E
      There is a 3 step jump between 2 notes in both scales, which contributes to their "exotic feel". (I hope I didn't boor you too badly with this little rant, seriously)

    When you lift off the index finger from a Dm shape it makes it Dsus2 shape (because the 2nd is a semitone below the minor 3rd).

  • @captaincrankysdock9730
    @captaincrankysdock9730 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    OK, the scale is D harmonic minor. So, someone has already posted that, but here's the why of it. If the scale were pure minor, you would have "flat 7th", which would be a C natural. However, the V chord would be A minor, (small "v"), instead of A. Harmonic minor raises the 7th to the position, (half step down from the root), that would occur in a pure major scale. However, this song modifies the scale even further, by using a B natural in the melody instead of the Bb that would occur in true D minor. (Sorry for the theory intrusion).
    It's a joy to see someone using a 12 string to demo this song. Its jangle makes the lack of a sitar much less obvious.

    Great job as usual. I do think on the original record KR was playing an electric..there is a clip from the 60’s of them miming on tv where he has a black 3 pickup Les Paul custom , same guitar from Sympathy and Beggars Banquet a couple years later! Of course he could be using a Casino or something else on record. I do hear an acoustic rhythm I believe and BRIAN JONES on Sitar playing that melody line . It’s a great song and record..Bill Wyman’s “zooming” on Bass is cool on the end too.
