I just donated alot of my plant to my library. They have a table always set up for plants for people to take. I feel good about giving plants away for others to enjoy!❤ Sharing is caring!❤
My reason for having house plants is for the aesthetics. They are part of my decor and make my tiny home warm and cozy. I’m not into having lots of propagations or small plants with only two or three leaves or rehabbing or cabinets. I like the old stand-byes that are low care but beautiful. I understand being into props or plants crowed together. But not my thing. The nice thing about the hobby is that there are so many ways of enjoying plants that there is something for everyone. Love your channel. Donna
I have never gotten rid of plant and then regretted it! I have killed a couple that I ended up repurchasing, but usually when I give it away/sell it it's such a relief. They are pretty plants, but maybe they deserve a home where they do spark joy ;) Usually if you are thinking about getting rid of something, it's for a good reason.
I do find it curious how the plant i searched for relentlessly, bought for a healthy price at the height of the plant craze and was so over the moon when i got it, now is one i just have no interest in. I hang on to it because i keep waiting for my feelings to change. I keep putting off making a decision. Kudos to you for taking the decision on your plants.
Fern that variegated vanilla orchid needs a transparent trellis. You had a really cute heart one a few videos back that would really show off that plant. ( Imo😂) And I went on a plant purge the last week ; any doubles, same with my 4ft plus plant trellis, ( 3 of them) chop chop, I am sure 30 plants have went to the compost. Whew it feels great !
It needs to be potted in a chunky mix. I view moss as more a medium for propagations. I think it would prefer being in a proper mix and really take off. It’s a beautiful plant!
Fern! This the first “purge” type video I’ve seen that actually helps me apply a logical method for evaluating my plants in a way that I can wrap my brain around! Thank you! Tonight, I will be beginning my downsizing journey! Cheers!
For the mini pixi, you could totally take a good bit of cuttings from that plant, there is so much beautiful growth, just sanitize and treat and give new soil and I bet the pests go away. I feel like the soil could be the mealy culprit. AND you’ll still have a nice size plant to start over with! ❤
Wildfern this video was perfect. This pass weekend i threw out anthurium, philodendron I didn't care. If it was runts that hadn't grown, leaves just kept crisping i let them go. I have about 70 that I really want to continue to see them thrive. I didn't want to go into winter stressed. I feel better
I have a Hoya linearis that I battled mealy bugs on. One day I cut it all off at the soil line and stuck all the cuttings in a glass 9 x 13 baking dish with a solution of fish emulsion and left it there for a few days. The solution was more concentrated than regular fertilizer. That was 2 years ago and my plant is still pest free. I think that would work great for your Hoya mini pixie. It's worth a try.
Wow! Such a unique and fun video! Should be a yearly thing ❤ loved the scoring idea with the sounds with it! Greaaatt job on the editing🎉 loved this video, the process of thinking the whys of getting rid of a plant 🎉 congrats on the vision of this video! LOVED IT ❤
I love the fairy castle cactus but I just threw mine away and it felt so good. The mealies girl. I BLEACHED THE PLANT and they lived. I had nothing left to try.
I love this new style of video! I'm behind anyone that wants to get rid of a plant regardless of a reason. However, sometimes we have to ask ourselves why it doesn't bring us joy. Is it because it needs a pretty pot? Would it be nicer if I take cuttings and was fuller? Would it look better on/off a trellis? Does it just need a good trim? Then again, it's up to anyone how much effort they want to do to keep the plant :)
I remember thinking blah for my paradoxa. But once I repotted into a hanging basket I started loving it. It’s now a part of my window ‘curtain’ collection next to my other trailing rhipsalis
I have been feeling anxious lately and I realized that maybe I have too many plants, that just doesn’t bring me joy - so thank you for this! Also, my plant supplies, pots, soils and other mediums also stresses me out. I am so blessed that I have my own plant/hobby room where I Keep some of it, but I also Keep pots and supplies like 3 other places around in my Home because I feel the need to Keep it all 😅🙈I would love a video where you could show how you keep your plant supplies, or if you already have one then maybe a link for it 💟
I love purging videos, i wish people made more of them so i highly appreciate this! i like your point system too. Theyre all questions you really gotta be honest with yourself about so it makes it hard to keep one you really shouldnt. I also try to ask myself these questions when im buying a plant too and its helped me sooooo much.
Asking yourself questions is so important in the process of finding new homes for things/plants! I like how you added a point system to it, so fun! I ask myself many questions of which some are similar to yours and it helps so much in deciding. Theres one additional question that I would add, Ill phrase it in 3 different ways: ) Would I be sad if I didn’t have this? ) Would I buy this (again) now if I didn’t have it? ) Would I be “jealous” if I saw it in someone else’s collection? It helped so much in deciding to rehome some plants that most people call their “staple plants” and so far I am not missing any of them 😊
My obovata is my heart plant! Mine is a slow grower but it’s easy to care for me - ive never gotten pests on it, it thrives off neglect, and it’s stunning on a circle trellis. I loveeeee your heart trellis. I can’t wait to see it bloom one day.
That was fun and honestly refreshing! I think many struggle with the same needs to get rid of some plants but having a hard time letting any go. I think this video was helpful! Yay 😊
Hi Fern! I have been watching your videos for about a year now without commenting, but I Loved this video! I would like to see more of these ranking videos. Really enjoyed the cozy talking and fun ranking system. 10/10
Fern, you bring me so much joy. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your channel. I can't believe how many Videos you have made recently. I grab my phone every morning to see if there is a new video. Thanks so much for all your great videos. 😊😊😊😊😅
I love this concept and your whole evaluation system! It was also nice to see a downsizing video versus a plant haul since we see that a lot on the internet in general! 💚
I’ve been watching Fern videos all day! I cleaned my whole house while watching your vlogs on your other channel, and then sat down and had dinner in front of this one. Thank you! 🫶🌱
Perhaps put both a Epi pinnatum marble and albo vine on one mosspole together, then you can still keep them both with half the work😂 Epi pin marble is definitely a very slow grower in my experience aswell, but once you start getting more fenestrations it's sooo worth it!
As someone with both, the Albo grows so much faster, so you won’t have them extend and the albo will be ready for a chop and extend 3 pole and the marble will be on the first pole still. I’m stunned how much faster the albo grows, and the leaves are so long and mature.
12:47 Noooo, it’s stunning. In my collection, the Marble Queen, and especially the Albo would go waaay before this. To bad I don’t live close to you. And think of it this way: if it doesn’t grow so fast, it doesn’t take up as much space 😉😊
Love the video! This is such a good inspiration since I've gotten overwhelmed by my collection and always procrastinate watering day, so I should defintely downsize!
I love this so much! I struggle getting rid of plants! I have 300+ and definitely could lose a few.... but when I go to sell/ toss some of them in like "but will I miss it? " But of all the plants I've gotten rid of, there are only 1 or 2 I actually miss. Keep up the excellent work, Fern! You are a planty icon 💚🌱 and a fingernail Queen! Love ya! 👸💅 ✨️
I loved this video and would love to see more like it. Also my vote is to keep the vanilla orchid and hoya pixie as those were the 2 you seemed most excited about. And declutter the rest :)
i've been where you are; i had over 300 plants. it got to the point where none were really bringing me joy bc i couldn't keep up with their care needs. all that to say, i now have around 50 plants. once i culled the collection, i never looked back. if you downsize, after a couple of weeks you won't even miss them, esp since you're getting rid of so few.
My two cents on Hoya Obovarta. I have the plain green and the splash. These are my “wild” hoya. They both are in hanging baskets outside my laundry and they have climbed their way through the roof. They both have like 30 blooms and last ages. My advice would be if you have the space (and weather I live is Australia) kick it in that space and let it go wild. Love you and your content 🌱 🤍
Love that you called yourself out on the sigilatis 😂 I was thinking Fern, girl, you literally said! And you called it 😂 👏 fantastic take on a downsizing video, loved it!
My hoya heart is crying. I love all of them, my Hoya Rangsan has very big leaves, almost as big as my hand. I love it so much!! The Hoyca mini pixie is sooo cute!
I’m thinking about doing the big chop on some of my plants just because they are not bringing anything to the house, not growing, etc… you just gave me the strength to do it 😂🌱
hey fern! I have always loved how real you are in your plant journey. have you considered using a systemic for your mealy-prone plants? I recently started using one, which has helped so much, especially with my mature hoyas!
32:53 I literally just received that one today. I’ve been on the hunt for it for a long time, so I couldn’t wait to unbox it, when I got home from work 👏🏻😊 I like the regular Sigillatis too. The foliage is so beautiful 😍
Get rid of them all!!! Haha obviously do whatever is right for you. But I always feel so relieved after a serious downsize. And your collection is waaay bigger than mine.
For the ones you are keeping, it might be time to cut many of the bigger plants back to a smaller size for a refresh? I did this with almost all mine and it simplified my space a lot ❤
I have several my collection of 175 that just don’t seem to size up but being stubborn I haven’t re-homed them yet. I think if I keep pushing on I’ll find the secret to making it grow to its perfect size one day. lol love the video ❤
Hey Fern! If you remember Caitlyn from PlantedinParadise (? I think that’s what her channel was called) she very long ago taught me to submerge plants with pests. Maybe for your Hoya pixie, you can do this method as a last ditch instead of only taking cuttings. Basically, you would rid it of all of its soil, make a bucket of lukewarm water with a capful of neem ( or isopropyl alcohol) and two capfuls of Castille soap properly mixed together; and let it sit in the bucket submerged ( usually use a plate or something) for twenty minutes. Then rinse and viola! Pest free! Essentially the act suffocates and kills any pests (or eggs). Obviously you may set the plant back because it will have to reestablish in new substrate but it’s really worth trying. I do this for all of my new acquisitions (minus anthurium). It really makes a big difference 💚 let me know if you decide to try it, and bless you for your point system! That’s brilliant ✨
Yo what's up Fern it's Jason I hope you're having an amazing Friday I just bought three new spider plants and I have them hanging in my living room I love them so much
I feel the same way if a plant is not giving me joy or it’s too bothersome and it’s just idle not doing it for me. I would just pass it on if someone wants it that I know of if not just discard really enjoyed your video. you’re always amazing. Appreciate your knowledge on every video 🤗🤗🤗😘
I never throw any of my plants into compost except for if they are completely gone and done done. I'll give away plants I don't like. For an example, my least favorite plant is a common kalanchoe. It stays in a 12-inch pot now. It becomes leggy every year. It drops leaves all winter and spring indoors. Their stems will not stand taller than 12 inches because they are soft. For the first 3 years, I tried to give it away with no success. Then it continues to grow. Now, every year from September to November, its leaves acquire reddish orange edge. Because I keep the pot outdoors in full sun and the cool air at night brings the color. I kind of like it now. The color is lovely, matching that of a sunset jade plant. I changed it to an expensive looking pot this fall. Oh well. If anyone wants it, I will still give it away for sure. But I tell all of my plants, I'll never abandon you.
Love the idea! I have made an inventory of my plants and ranked them with one to three points in the categorys Look (or potential), joy (including growth ans pest resiliance) and desire to rebuy incase of loss. And for fun 1 bonus point if i really love it. So i got 10 points in total. Plans with less than 7 Points have to go.😅
Idk if you're in to mixed poles or pots at all but thats sometimes a way i can keep a couple species without having multiple pots or poles. Just a thought. Not every plant looks good with other plants of course but sometimes can look good🤙🏼
I got an epipremnum pinnatum marble at the beginning of this summer. She was about 8 inches tall at the time and has recently outgrown her moss pole (so almost tripled in size). The only thing I do beyond normal care is that I have a grow light sitting directly in front of her.
If I had a vanilla orchid I think I’d find a big peice of driftwood or a an aged branch/ log that can pass as driftwood. Something long enough that you can wrap her all the way around it. I like using driftwood instead of planks or moss poles for climbing plants that I really want to showcase in my home, because you can get it to look good from multiple angles instead of just one like with a plank or pole that your trying to cover.
First of all, anything with a mealy, i'm taking a cutting and trashing the rest. No questions asked lol 2nd I love your epipremnum marbel and think you should keep it!
I put my vanilla in the bottom of my milsbo tall with the intention of letting it grow in there forever and get big growing up the sides. I’m considering making the cabinet into a vivarium/terrarium of sorts so that it will permanently house plants like that in a mini enclosure hoping it will get big and bloom some day
Your hair is so stinkin cute, every scindapsus I’ve had, including my newest, the leaves curl, what is that? Certainly not under watering in my care, maybe overwatering? Makes me not want them anymore, I pick up what I think I’ll love and find out different things about it that dull it’s “shine” ✨ after a while, which is good, cause I can’t fit THEM ALL in my space.
Loved the question format! A couple questions I ask myself; could I replace it easily if I miss it? Would I rather see one of my wishlist plants in that spot? Fun video Fern
WAIT DONT LEAVE US HANGING!! Did you get rid of any of them?! 😅 I loved this video! It was such a unique idea doing a point system and I will definitely use that point system myself when doing my next downsize! Awesome editing job Fern! 💚
The Vanilla got me the "it's not you, who is the problem, it's me" kind of vibes (dramatic music included) 😂 my mom had hers on a bambus trellis which looked a little like a latter and I pretty liked its was growing an it. Maybe this is something for you^^
hey fern! loved the video format and i’ll def steal the idea lol i think that plants like the epipremnum and the monstera would be really rewarding if you kept growing them and, one day, they would look exactly like you want them to look, and it would feel so good…. but idk, maybe that’s just the fact that i just can’t get these plants here in brazil talking 😂
I was just at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens this week & they have them wrapped around large poles. Not a particularly attractive plant, but there’s aren’t variegated. Fern’s is beautiful!
That's a good system. I was influenced to get a pilea peppermiodes and a zz in 2019 and totally hated them. I unalived the pretty quick but the poor pilea has had an abused life. Sometimes it thrived, but now is almost done. I should have put them in front of my grocery store with a free sign. I've got to learn how to weed out the ones I don't want. Plus I hate my 3 monsteras!!
Keep the marble pinnatum! I watch you just to See how it’s progressing compared to mine! 🤣 go drastic with the Hoya.. dunk her… soak her in a pesticide and remove her soil and repot.
Loved the video! I watch you all the time, and should comment more. I think you should put that cute sigilatis on a little round trellis. It will look so much fuller and then you’ll love it more. 😊
thank you so much for watching! and true, that's such a good idea. i did end up getting rid of that one 🙈 buuut if i get another form of sigillatis i think i'll go with a cirlce trellis :)
I just donated alot of my plant to my library. They have a table always set up for plants for people to take. I feel good about giving plants away for others to enjoy!❤ Sharing is caring!❤
Love this idea!
My reason for having house plants is for the aesthetics. They are part of my decor and make my tiny home warm and cozy. I’m not into having lots of propagations or small plants with only
two or three leaves or rehabbing or cabinets. I like the old stand-byes that are low care but beautiful. I understand being into props or plants crowed together. But not my thing. The nice thing about the hobby is that there are so many ways of enjoying plants that there is something for everyone. Love your channel. Donna
I agree with you 100 percent on if a plant doesn’t bring you joy get rid of it! I’ve had plants that I have just composted😭
Yesss 💯
I have never gotten rid of plant and then regretted it! I have killed a couple that I ended up repurchasing, but usually when I give it away/sell it it's such a relief. They are pretty plants, but maybe they deserve a home where they do spark joy ;) Usually if you are thinking about getting rid of something, it's for a good reason.

Also feel like you should get rid of the marble epi and try to put your albo on a pole
You’re always so inventive with your video ideas ❤
💯 🎯 Yes!

I like the Hoya sigillatis, like you said I think she just needs to be filled out more.
It’s kinda sad looking. I personally wouldn’t hang on to it. Especially when you have over 200 plants. You want them all to shine, not just exist.
I have a Hoya linearis that I battled mealy bugs on. All good things to consider. As superficial as it sounds, I have found changing a pot can make a difference.
@@lisabarnes5340 absolutely! It takes it from a plant to a piece of art

Great choice of questions! But it doesn’t look like you want to get rid of any of them!
Not me looking at my melano-crisis knowing well it just scored 6 ❌ straight lolol
You must watch Richards videos. He’s so funny. He has definitely turned me off that plant. No divas in my collection.
@GreenWitch1 Richard who? Always looking for another planty TH-camr to keep me company. 😉
@@lisabarnes5340must be talking about Sheffield made plants.
@@lisabarnes5340 This might show up like, 3 times because it keeps glitching on me, but they are talking about Sheffield Made Plants.
@ His channel is Sheffield Made Plants. He calls his a melanocrisis too 😂
I love the rubric format and sound effects!! fun video!😄
Love this and all your videos! Vlogs too! Keep them coming! 🧡🌱🧡
Great questions, not only when getting rid of plants but even more important when getting new ones. Only get one when all questions got ✅
So true! 💯
Yo what's up Fern it's Jason I hope you're having an amazing Friday I just bought three new spider plants and I have them hanging in my living room I love them so much
I feel the same way if a plant is not giving me joy or it’s too bothersome and it’s just idle not doing it for me. I would just pass it on if someone wants it that I know of if not just discard
really enjoyed your video. you’re always amazing. Appreciate your knowledge on every video 🤗🤗🤗😘
Ugggh you’re so pretty. Best planty content ❤
Plans with less than 7 Points have to go.😅
It’s a nice video idea and maybe this way you can find people who would take the plants that you decide to rehome
Loved the video; wish I could get in your compost 😅
I think some of the potential cast outs could spark joy in me for awhile😉
I'm probably the only person on earth that don't care for Hoyas, but I do think they are cute and respect others love of them.
Nope, you're not lolol. I just don't see the appeal. 🫣😁
This is the inspo I needed cause I’ve been side eyeing my collection……. 😂❤
Hahaha I feel you 👀
Idk if you're in to mixed poles or pots at all but thats sometimes a way i can keep a couple species without having multiple pots or poles.
This is a great video. Just what I needed!
Love this type of video. The point system is so much fun... and omg, when do we get to see the results? Who got the axe? 😂❤
Oo those are good ones! Love it 😊
I love your vanilla orchid. It's so pretty.
WAIT DONT LEAVE US HANGING!! Did you get rid of any of them?! 😅
I loved this video! It was such a unique idea doing a point system and I will definitely use that point system myself when doing my next downsize! Awesome editing job Fern! 💚
I just bought some sigilattis narrow cuttings so I find it hilarious to see it in this video! I have the round version too and it is SLOW 🥲
Thanks for the fun video 👍 Interesting rating criteria 😀🇨🇦
May I have some cuttings from your Scindapsus silver cloud? I love it.
Love the gamification and sound effects
The Vanilla got me the "it's not you, who is the problem, it's me" kind of vibes (dramatic music included) 😂 my mom had hers on a bambus trellis which looked a little like a latter and I pretty liked its was growing an it. Maybe this is something for you^^
Some of these are so beautiful, what do you plan to do with the ones you decide didn't make the cut. ? Do you utilize plant swaps?
This was so well done!
hey fern! loved the video format and i’ll def steal the idea lol i think that plants like the epipremnum and the monstera would be really rewarding if you kept growing them and, one day, they would look exactly like you want them to look, and it would feel so good…. but idk, maybe that’s just the fact that i just can’t get these plants here in brazil talking 😂
Perhaps put the vanilla orchid on a nice trellis? It is gorgeous ❤
I was just at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens this week & they have them wrapped around large poles. Not a particularly attractive plant, but there’s aren’t variegated. Fern’s is beautiful!
I just went through a big downsize as well. I was becoming stressed by the cluttered feel. I gifted soooo many and sold a few.
The format of this video was fun. :)
