I love this band. I went to see them in concert in the early 90s. I was in a state of trance through most of it. They had great songs thru the 80s and became more commercial in the 90s, but they maintained their lyrics as instrument throughout. Lovely.
@@stevenorthwick2480 Do you think so? I think they’ve always been highly revered from very early on and their influence was swift and has been long lasting. I love this album.
@@AKBrechin I definitely agree among a group of devoted fans and admirers, but I feel they should have had much more of a mainstream following. They wrote loads of great songs.
Quite possibly their finest album. For me it's between this and "Treasure." My fave track on this album is the 2nd track, "Athol-Brose." Simply sublime.
BBK - best CT album., not over engineered , just perfect to hear all the component parts which make the band stand out for me in this genre. Love it and really enjoyed your reaction Justin.
I preferred the less dreamy albums and EPs, but I love this album. Imo Fraser’s voice is at the height of it’s powers and she shows off its full range ….. that Suckling the Mender high note … unbelievable.
Hi Justin! Watched some of your classical music reactions! As a classical pianist myself, I love your reviews and the things you say about the music! Pls react to more classical pieces, we like them a lot.. thanks! :D
Thank you Time; I appreciate that! Actually will have something coming very soon lol. And if you ever have any insight into some of the random questions I may ask, I'd love to hear and learn more
Great song. I knew a girl that they were her absolute favorite band. Had all the albums. Posters, shirts. Never once called them the Cocteau Twins. Always the Cockatoo Twins.
Of course the progenitors of shoegaze (and dream pop) have a shoegaze feel, haha. This album was an important transition between the singles they were releasing in the 80s, and the sound they had going on with their best known album, Heaven or Las Vegas. Carolyn's Fingers is my favorite song from this album. The singles in the 80s are really what you can use to track their progression, because Victorialand throws a real wrench in the spanner for progression of their sound. I would highly recommend you reacting to the singles compilations "Lullabies to Violane" Volumes One and Two. Great, great stuff. They charted the course for shoegaze/dreampop for everyone who followed.
An excellent album. Iceblink Luck and Carolyn's Fingers are outstanding. Edit: Memory playing tricks again. Iceblink Luck is of course from Heaven Or Las Vegas. Can the bath chair and the ear trumpet be far away?
I was just about to pedantically correct you, and realized you had done it yourself. Kudos, sir. And my fave track on HOLV is the closer, :"Frou-frou foxes in midsummer fires." Ecstatic.
@@sagnyc Thanks, I never mind being corrected. It's how we learn stuff. I was thinking of Cico Buff, which I heard on a Sunday afternoon TV chart show that had an 'indie' section. It was the first time the band had made a promotional video for one of their songs, having famously shunned publicity of any kind until then. I agree, the 'frou frou' track is amazing, though 'Road River And Rail' is my personal favourite.
I own the album, and I managed to get Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie to sign it! Now listen to Square one by Coldplay... they basically stole those notes! beautiful song
I was never really impressed by this slightly too sugary album, except for three great songs including the title track that you listened to, "The Itchy Glowbo Blow", and the closing track "Ella Megalast Burls Forever". The rest of Blue Bell Knoll doesn't speak to me. I prefer their debut album Garlands as well as their second Head Over Heels which you already know, the ethereal and ambient Victorialand, as well as their couple of EPs Tiny Dynamine/Echoes in a Shallow Bay also released as an album in 1985.
I have no idea how you can like Victorialand and not this. Victorialand is wimpy AF compared to this part of their catalog. Victorialand was an anomaly in their progression as a band and would not have even happened had Simon not been off doing the second This Mortal Coil album. Their singles go straight into this sort of stuff, Aikea-Guinea, Tiny Dynamine, Echoes in a Shallow Bay, and then Love's Easy Tears. Add in the 4 songs Liz sings on from Moon and the Melodies, and Crushed from Lonely is an Eyesore, and you've got 2 albums worth of material that actually is representative of the growth from Treasure.
Although very good IMO Blue bell knoll isn't their best album. I would give that award to either Victorialand or Treasure which always vie for "top spot" with me and can never quite make my mind up about.
Head Over Heels was definitely one of their best, varied, and most innovative albums from 1983, they only other album better is Heaven or Las Vegas from 1990.

This song and "Carolyn's Fingers" are my two favorites of theirs.
Great Song , underrated album, doesnt get enough praise.
Very hypnotic.
Underrated band.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favourite tracks of all time of all time of all time!!!!! Over excited...
the whole album is fantastic
Probably their best
My favourite CT song. When I first heard this, the section where it soars at the end made me burst into tears. Yep. Not ashamed! 😂

Ty sj! I enjoyed this :)
Shoegaze would not exist if Cocteau Twins didn't inspire that sound.
Single-handedly create is more like it.
@@eboethrasher I have listened to this way more than to _Loveless_ It actually isn’t a stretch to say that I prefer it.

Every track on this album is great.

If you like to cover a full album, go for Treasure - one of the greatest post-punk/goth/dream-pop albums ever.
Creamy, dreamy, seize me.
Amazing album

Maybe This Mortal Coil is a group down your alley.
I had this LP.......
Jeff Buckley's Morning Theft is a classic.
For me, For Phoebe, Still a Baby, is all I will ever need to hear from this band. It's very directed it isn't fluttery at all.
Very Purple Rain that track

I've never done karaoke, but I was wondering the other day if there is much Cocteau Twins on the lists. And NOT the songs with English words.
"Hey, I reckon we should name our band after two random body parts...nooo, not those!!"
Made me smile that comment. Could have been Bumfinger.

Though liking and listening easily this album, I consider it their less good... Just to mention it has their best song ever: Itchy Glowbo-Blow. 😊
Now that I listen to this for the hundredth time: this is shoegaze, no more, no less.
