Just watched the entire series for my first time and finished in about 2 weeks. Great show. Ashame I didn't see it when it first aired on TV. Glad I found it better late than never.
Yep, and they added in little hints to other parts of history so well. Like Cullen meeting Custered there in the final episode, and showing a much more historically accurate Custered
Thank you TMW for another great video. I think what Hell on wheels did, was show that there was good and bad people on both sides of the Civil war. The character of Cullen Bohannon was really well written.
Thanks G! I was just getting started unpacking that show with more videos but it's apparently coming off Netflix in January. So before I do more videos about a show people can't watch I want to make sure it lands somewhere else.
One of my favorite videos about this amazing amc tv Series and is very insightful he’ll on wheels is without doubt my most favorite tv series I was extremely sad to see this series end i am afraid there will be nothing like it once in a lifetime series to watch and it is a Honor to have a opportunity to watch
When Hell On Wheels was on tv originally, I told anyone who would listen that the show would stand the test of time and be rediscovered later on by a whole new audience. Please forgive me, but I have to say it. I TOLD YOU SO. One of the best shows ever made.
Well I didn't want Breaking Bad to end but the show set during two years so Walt was on a break of death so he has no choice but to cook crystal meth pure and even kill people.
After enjoying your other work, watching this prompted me to give HOW a chance. I recall years ago seeing the trailers and, despite my interest in westerns, i thought it looked too stylized and too socially "modern" to appeal to me. However, after watching all five seasons in about a week's time i was pleasantly surprised. It is excellent and was a story that deserved to be told. Many thanks.
I thought the same thing. The commercials made th show look tacky. And very deadwoodish....which is not a good thing. Deadwood took revisionist western too far. This show done it perfectly
The part that got me the most was after that scene where Bohannon burries his friend. When you see his walls finally collapse as cries spew out of him like a waterfall. I've never seen a more realistic scene of a man's strength let go. It felt so primal and guttural.
Cullen is the first hero i ever seen come out of mississippi, and he is the epitome of the south, both in the past and in the present. A soldier and a worker that holds family close. And when you mess with our family, you mess with what makes us hole. He also embodies the change of the south during that time. All while being a BMF. His character growth is insane also. And the amount of pain he went through brings a tear to my eye. The only thing i think they struggled to show about where he comes from is how close we hold our religion, even if it may not seem so.
@@christophereichten9005 never said we did. I simply said that he was a very good depiction of life in the south. Specially back then, and thats part of his character. Sorry to somehow offend you with a comment from idk how long ago.
@@christophereichten9005 who said i was good? But kinda in our blood. Ever heard a southern person say bless your heart? Thats not a very nice thing to hear because they are basically calling you stupid.
I'm curious why the final season was left out entirely. I loved it, and there were some powerful scenes with Mei where you can see Cullen still struggling with the killer in him who doesn't think he deserves love or happiness. I can see why it would be controversial, but his arc definitely didn't end with Elam.
Because the show was supposed to be canceled. Hardly any of the original members make an appearance. They had to come up with a story for Cullen without the sweede, the hatches, Durant, elam, and the whole fifth season is us getting to know the new cast...then the show is over.
@@themodernwestern4681 ---- No Anson Mount is not done with his Great Acting. He is now filming his new Startrek: Strange New Worlds series in Canada. He started it about 2 months ago. He will be reprising his role of Captain Pike. I'm so excited to see him getting his own TV series again. This came about because the Fans Screamed to the Network to give Anson Mount his own TV series being Captain Pike again. Everybody loved him as Captain Pike.
I know the actress who played Lilly wanted to leave the show and that’s completely fine but where I have a problem is the direction the show took after it. It was still good but at the end of the day but having the Mormons almost shoved down your throat was a big turn off and it was Interesting at first but when they kept up with it and even the pregnancy arc it just lost me.
The only problem I have with the show--but it's not a big one--is that Bohannan never found that last Union soldier who killed his wife. i wish he would have by the end of the series and just decided not to kill him to show how his character had moved inform being a Destroyer to a Builder. I mean, granted, that point was made well enough I fell by the end, but for closure to that story arc and since that's the premise that the show started and was initially advertised on, I wish it had been completed. I also wish it would've turned out to have been someone that we'd known all along in the series who turned out to be that soldier. That would've been a surprise and an exciting twist.
I love that I found this channel! You are killing it man! Thank you for the work that you do. Do you ever think you'd do a video on Blood Meridian? I know it is a novel but it's a pretty wild take on a western. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for your kind comments! There are some really great books out there that I hope to discuss soon. One of my favorites is McCarthy’s “The Road.” The most horrifying story a father could conceive!
I mean, they may have slightly looked at Cullen & Elam's relationship through a modern lense, but that doesn't necessarily mean that something like that was physically impossible back then, especially coming from someone who had survived way too much & stepped back from the rest of the world because of it. Also, he wasn't exactly 100% the nicest guy in the world to Elam at all times.
I’ve watched this video several times over a few years… and, still, all I really see is my southern American father and German/Norwegian immigrant mother families going through the trials and tribulations presented them by participating in the so-called “American dream”. I’m probably gonna watch the series again now… but , shit man, nothing about it is easy.
Interesting... You have played the heavy in Westerns before. If not you are suited to it. No offense but if I were Longmire, Raylan or Bohannon, well if you were the doer of the bad deed... see ya.
Cullen is less like Loki and more like Abaddon. Well, to be fair, he pales in comparison to Abaddon, but he's just a man, so we have to cut him some slack.
You are imagining things. This show aired and ended before wokeness ruined TV shows. The agenda was to entertain, and it did just that. My favorite show as well.
HoW holds a special place in my heart, not many series or movies have a southern hero. Cullen is a fantastic Everyman character
Good point.

Agreed, usually the southerner is the antagonist. H O W is one of my favorites
I loved Hell On Wheels so much I legally changed my last name to Bohannon
Agree. Absolutely

It's nuts how many people don't know what it is. I got lucky to try it out but nobody I know has watched it and I've told them all too
I just love Cullen Bohannan. He held on to a measure of human decency when exposed to every ugly aspect of human character.
The relationship between Cullen and the Swede has always reminded me of Batman and the Joker.
Or Roland Deschain and the Man in Black
YES!!! That's exactly what i thought as i watched the series and wondered why i hadn't heard anyone else compare their relationship to them.
Anson Mount recently voiced the Batman in the latest injustice movie
@@Dereko123it's a shame that it not Kevin, and Mark.
Excellent character breakdown. God how I loved this show and its storytelling. From the fiction to actual facts its definitely one of my favorites.

Best series I have ever been lucky enough to watch. What a privilege.
The best show/series I have ever watched!
I agree
The whole setup of season 1 is just so good.
One of my all time favorite shows and an all time great character
Agreed!
Cullen Bohannon is a badass western character and his Griswold Revolver
I recently finished watching this with my Dad. We've watched a lot together, but nothing has ever hit so hard. HoW is superb. We loved every episode.
Cullen Bohannon is awesome. Thank God I had the opportunity to watch this show!
Fantastic western! Wished it was still on! Equal to Tombstone!!! Best series ever!

That was a really good series. Wish it had not ended......😢

I actually shed a tear when he buried him all by himself
The Bohannan vs Swede rivalry was absolutely brilliant.
I loved this. It was one of the first shows I binged.....
I often thought about this character when playing red dead 2 and modeled my character after him
I always thought of red dead also!
I believe they made Morgan based on this character, only if they made the game as good as the show
Anson Mount was a big fan of the first red dead and based some of Cullens mannerisms after John Marston
The game is better than this show. I guarantee more ppl know Arthur Morgan then Cullen bohannon
