I wasn’t able to ride it with the launch, but I did with the chainlift. It honestly felt like it was going to derail if it was going any faster. It was an absolute blast that made me ride it several more times. I firmly believe that the switch to the chainlift was a good thing. There is way less downtime.
I absolutely hate the comments that claim that they ruined the ride. It seriously undermines the fun you can have on it.
To he fair, as someone who has riden the launch version multiple times, the ride IS worse when riding.
The question isn't really if the experience while riding is better or worse. That's an obvious... worse.
The question is if it's worth losing debatable the best feature to downgrade it from a world-class attraction to a great ride for the sake of keeping it running more.
That is the real question that has to be answered. While still fun, it is not as fun to ride now. The launch was awesome.
The person who replied before me is 100% correct. The ride is nowhere near as good as it was with the launch, period. The increased reliability is not worth it.
They neutered the Rod
Guys, don’t complain. Dollywood had 2 options, to either use a chain lift or tear down the ride completely. If you care about the layout and not just the launch then the first option is better, and Dollywood thought that too since it is one of their most beloved attractions. They tried EVERYTHING they could to keep the launch operating, but it was just too ambitious.
Tearing it down would've been better than downgrading it to a chain lift.
@@trevorwise3222 How?? Lightning Rod has some amazing elements other than the launch.
@paninidevOfficial it does, but the launch really amplified those elements. Watching the older videos of it, it looked way more fast and exciting than it does now. But that's just my opinion. 🤷🏻♂️
Why were those the only two option. Why not leave it he and continue operating it as they had for years?
@@dblevins343 Dollywood would lose a lot of money and it would hardly be open. They already tried everything, i-box, making the launch slower, but nothing helped. If dollywood wanted to keep this open and reliable, they had to do this.
The launch was so much better because it was exhilarating and fun
It was better but maintenance wasn't.
Honestly anyone who says that Lightning Rod runs the same with the chain lift is crazy, literally a second slower at like every turn/hill
I love the sound of the upstops spinning when it hits the brakes.
I wish they used a cable, yes it will be less reliable than a chain lift, but it will be as fast as the launch beforehand, and it could bring back the speed it had during 2018
I rode this while it was still a launch coaster and it traumatized me
It's so nice rmc made a family coaster...lol wow...yeah that slowed it down a tad eh?
I’ve seen the lightning rod in person three times and it was close every time
This was the first ever coaster I ever road
I really wanted to experience Lightning Rod when it still had the launched lift hill.. now it just doesn't look worth it anymore 💀😭
You’re right, because it’s not worth it anymore. Dollywood really messed up.
@brendancollins2970 granted, that's just my personal opinion on it. It could still be just as fun without it, but personally, I thought the launched lift hill made it unique. It really fit with the name "Lighting Rod" because of how fast it was.
@@trevorwise3222 I 100% agree. Dollywood is my home park and thankfully I got to experience it with the launch a lot of times. It was so unique. Now it’s just another RMC.
Wow 😳. Wow 😳. Wow 😳. Wow 😳. Wow that's awesome 👍😎
More reliable but less fun :(
The chain lift is still so stupid. Perhaps if Dollywood had put steel supports on the launch straight instead of wooden supports that don't properly line up with the launch fins, Lightning Rod would still be my number 1 coaster there
Never experienced it with the launch but it’s more reliable now and still my #1 overall
@@George_bonnaire how can this possibly be in the top roller coasters at Dollywood? Ever since 2019 Lightning Rod just keeps diving, and it's one of the bottom tier RMCs on my list. Tennessee Tornado will always be the best in my educated opinion
@@George_bonnaire the 2016-18 launch was very fun, and it's sad to see Lightning Rod went from a top tier RMC to a bottom tier RMC
Yeah I wish I got to feel the launch but it was barely open and maybe they didn’t want to invest in steel supports
Tbh the launch wasn’t very good anyways but it’s still unfortunate this had to happen
More reliable now
Wdym? LSMs are extremely reliable and dont need as much maintenance
@@robloxplayer2876 LSMs with a proper steel structure, yes. The issue with Lightning Rod was that LSMs + Wood = too much sway, they screwed up and would either need to replace the LSMs with a chain lift or the entire lift hill with a steel structure.
@@kirblar oh, i think they just should have replaced it with steel tbh
@@robloxplayer2876well you know they want to save money, replacing a structure support with a different one is more expensive then changing the launch into a chain lift.
@@JadenLiu-ot9xzand nobody would call it a “wood coaster” anymore which defeats the whole purpose of this ride
I was there 2 weeks ago
Is there still a single rider line?
Holy crap that's awesome
Why don't they just make the lift hill taller? Wouldn't that make it as fast as before?
They would need to rebuild the 1st 2 drops as well, too expensive i assume.
This ride is like a human with all its legs amputated and replaced with prosthetic arms and legs
YOUR COMMENT IS WACK SAUCE
Its no longer lighting rod its just ROD
I have seen more intense monorails.
Wait why didn’t it launch you up???
SLOWER than Molasses in January :(
I get why the change was made. But for those wondering, no it is not as fun.
This downgraded this coaster from one of the best in the world down to a great coaster.
Still great, but not the jaw dropper it use to be.
.
Great video! Is it hard to work with Dollywood to get your camera on their rides? @TheCoasterScoop
The chain lift kills the whole ride.
