  • Wasn't going to hit up the Couloir again because of nerves, but when the skies cleared on the 3rd day and some fresh snow blanketed the resort, I seized the opportunity. Got it in perfect conditions and am proud of how I skied it when comparing it to last year.

    Type of Difficulty: VERY Steep
    Date Skied: 3/30/23

    Comments on the Run(s): Extremely steep run that descents the centerline of Lone Peak. Famous for being gnarly. Usually has good snow down the chute because the patrol limits the amount of skiers that descend.

    Great video. Gives a good perspective. Love that “Ophelia” is playing.
    I’m hitting this next year for my bday!

      Good luck! Hate to keep bringing it up, but just in case, the Couloir and North Summit require avi gear to ski 😭 and our first year we didnt know and were denied access. I hope it goes smoothly! The Couloir still scares me, which isn't common for pure steep terrain, but the sustained pitch and length still gets me nervous.

    Bumping Ophelia while hitting big couloir is kinda nuts

    Looks like yoy caught is with great conditions. Seems like something i would be comfortable skiing. The most intimidating thing seems to be how long it is
    It's like skiing Phillipes's at Mammoth except 10x as long (and thankfully wider).
    Looks less intimidating

    How hard is big couloir compared to the extreme runs at whistler?

    • @skitnb
      @skitnb  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Big Couloir is a straight shot steep skiing test. Runs like West Cirque, Excitation, Monday's, and Pipeline have more technical elements, but to be honest, the steepest sections of those runs are still not as steep as the Big Couloir, with maybe only Excitation coming close. The Big Couloir is still steeper than Couloir Extreme, I can confidently say that. It's still pretty gnarly.

    What are the requirements to ski this run? Im going out there in a month and this run seems like a blast!

      Avi beacon and a partner. They say avi beacon, probe, and shovel but they only asked for my beacon at the hut. Also be a good rider obviously.

    how does this compare to like main chute on Baldy? I know its longer than main but it doesn't look much harder. Is that assumption right or wrong?

    • @skitnb
      @skitnb  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty confident in saying the Big Couloir is quite a bit steeper and has more fall consequence than Main Chute. I found the Couloir, personally, to be much harder than Main Chute (of which I've done both).

      @@skitnb Damm alright I still gotta hit this...I think I just need to blast "Freebird" at the top and I should be good. ;)

      😂😂Good luck man. You need Avi Gear for this run too, unlike Baldy.

      @@skitnb Great skiing as usual! Like ur Alta patch! I do most everything at Altabird, which often get rated higher in difficulty. Never been to Big Sky but it seems tougher with the large number of longer narrower chutes and harsher conditions. Your opinion?

    • @skitnb
      @skitnb  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Big Sky definitely recieves less snowfall and it creates more rock hazzards and spicier runs. I'd say it generally is a gnarlier mountain, but Snowbird and Big Sky have their own super sketchy stuff. Big Sky's snowfall definitely plays a big factor in its challenge, but generally I'd say it's the more challenging resort. I love both though! 🔥🔥 Tram autocharge is a huuuuge put-off though. 😭

    What's that you're signing at the start? (Forgive me im from Europe)

    • @skitnb
      @skitnb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a sign out with Patrol so that they can keep track of who decends in case something happens. You put your name and number. It's mandatory for North Summit Snowfield, Big Couloir, and Little Couloir.

    • @hughd1014
      @hughd1014 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @skitnb that's crazy coming from an alpine perspective. In europe, these guys are only responsible for keeping the groomed pistes safe and anything outside of that you are responsible for yourself (whether you're 20 feet or 20 miles outside the signposts). There are even completely uncontrolled ski areas like La Grave or certain lifts in Chamonix

    • @skitnb
      @skitnb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I've heard. Not sure about the death rates over in that uncontrolled terrain you got but I think it's pretty helpful over here.
