  • In this video, I go over the forces (in Newtons) involved with chewing, clenching, and bruxing. These forces can vary a lot but the forces of clenching/bruxing are definitely significantly higher. These forces can fracture teeth, damage the jaw joints, and put the muscles of the head, neck, and jaw in a dysfunctional state.

    I discovered your videos recently, in a desperate attempt to find answers for my situation. About 2,5 years ago, I started having some unknown pain and I kept saying 'My face hurts, my face hurts'... The pain has never left and becomes 10-100 times stronger during moments of stress.
    I live in Romania. It took me 2 years of seeing doctor after doctor only to find out that the pain is in my actual muscles and nerves, both sides of my face. MRI showed a slight dislocation of the right condyle, but one physiotherapist said my pain is much stronger than it should be considering the MRI. I am in the process of having a mouth guard done by an orthodontist, who is in a hurry every time I see her.
    I clench, I don't brux, and the TMJ doesn't actually pop nor does it hurt when I eat. It's just a constant pain in my muscles :( making all life activities so difficult.. A few seconds of stress are enough to increase the pain, many times to unbearable levels. Have you encountered this? What other tests can I do to see what is causing the strong constant pain? As I write, on a scale of 1-10, it's an 8,5.
    Sorry for the long message! I appreciate your videos and also read your TMJ-related PDF. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!🙏💗

      @theTMJdoc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I've definitely encountered what you are describing. Your pain is likely muscular in nature. The muscles of the head, neck, and jaw can enter a dysfunctional state and once there, they are in a cycle of chronic pain/spasm. It takes the proper treatment to get the muscles calmed down. Once out of the dysfunctional state, pain goes down.

      @@theTMJdoc Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. It makes sense.
      The neurologist I recently saw diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and prescribed me Lyrica. The side effects were so bad I couldn't take more than one pill. During check up she said Lyrica was basically my only hope..
      Is there any way you could possibly advise me towards a proper treatment? Or is it something only a local doctor could do? (Though at this point, I've exhausted my local options.) Thank you so much once again! 🙏

    Hi Priya, thank you for making this video!
    I noticed that I can't help clenching when I'm concentrating - after hours of work or study, my muscles get so sore and sometimes my jaw joint area hurts.
    You mentioned that its difficult to change the bad habit. Can you please share some tips? I went to a TMJ doctor in Vancouver, Canada, but before I save enough money for the treatment, I really hope to get some tips so I can stop clenching as much as possible :)

    Just been making my way through several of your videos. Thank you for putting them together.
    Since about November last year when I unusually had 3 large bowls of crispy honey flakes (like cornflakes), I've had a problem with my left jaw. I barely move my jaw and it's a very minimal grinding movement but it's like I'm grinding/crunching my cartlidge . Everyday the cartlidge feels solid when I wake up but I started to grind/crunch away at it and within a matter of about 30 seconds or so I start to break it down. Externally you can barely see any movement of my jaw.
    My lower jaw goes slightly to the left and when I slide my lower jaw forwards it makes a dry sliding sound (like cartlidge on cartlidge) compared to the right side
    The majority of the crunching isn't painful as such but because I crunch /grind away for hours each day, it can inflame that area and I sometimes get ear pain. I also don't know if my constant grinding can be heard outside of my face by others around me. I also possibly don't drink enough water each day(??).
    I also have OSA for which I have a CPAP machine and I put my upper teeth guard in to, just to give my jaw/cartlidge a break. I sleep on my left side and have a firm neck support pillow.
    Is the above condition known as anything in particular and do you have any good exercises for it?
    Many thanks if you can shed any light on the matter etc
    Kind regards
    Sue x

    Do you believe that clenching can cause tooth root damage? I went to my dentist a few days ago and she did full mouth X-rays. She then said I need at least one, maybe two root canals because my jaw had dark areas that resemble abscesses? But I have no dental symptoms- only the TMJ symptoms. I was evaluated by an endodontist 5 years ago for the same area/ same thing and he said root canal was not indicated but offered no other explanation. I honestly don’t know what to do.

    • @AznDudeIsOn
      @AznDudeIsOn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hm whether it does or not, you should definitely address the TMJ.
      Even if clenching did not cause tooth root damage (which I suspect it does) you should be addressing clenching anyway.

    • @chrislynn9666
      @chrislynn9666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AznDudeIsOn You are absolutely right. I have failed with dental night guards and stupidly did not realize that a TMJ splint was not the same thing. I went to my dentist this past week with the intention of discussing this but she was preoccupied with what she saw on my X-rays so it got put on the back burner (again). I don’t live in an area that offers much choice in medical professionals without a 3-5 hour drive, sadly. That’s why I love TH-cam and kind people like Dr. Mistry who are willing to help.

    • @theTMJdoc

      If you're unsure of whether or not you need a root canal, you can always get a second opinion. And yes, clenching can definitely cause tooth damage - including the root.

    How I wish I could clone you and have your clone open an office in Washington DC (if you have a colleague in the area, please let me know) . I have seen lots of your informative videos, and it has helped guide me on my journey. I suffer from vestibular migraines, and I try to manage it with diet and sleep. However, I do believe that my neck and TMJ disfunction do affect the migraines and my overall health (I have a poping sound on the left and tinnitus). I am currently doing invisalign to fix my bite. Going to the chiropractor to address the position of the atlas and axis. Doing the jaw massages you have shown on another video. I am looking for a dentist who can determine if I need a mouth guard after the invisalign. I can't thank you enough, I am doing all of these thanks to the information you have shared. 🌻

      Yes lack of oxygen can cause clenching, look into obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment involves CPAP devices or mandibular advancement devices to keep the airway open at night. See your doctor if you think you may have osa

    Ma'am, I have a uncomfortable feeling when I have air in my mouth(that is when I keep my upper and lower teeth apart) to keep my tongue on my roof. Is it okay to have this air in mouth? When I blow the air out and keep my mouth airless, my teeth touches.

    • @Goldenlegend1000

      @@theTMJdocYes Ma'am, I can keep my lips together while keeping my teeth apart, but I sense to have some air under my tongue while doing so(between my tongue and the floor of the mouth under the tongue).
      So when I removing that air bubble out of the mouth, my tongue automatically touches the back of my upper teeth, and my lower teeth go behind my upper incisors(This is my usual tongue and mouth posture).
      I had a very good looking face, high cheekbones and good looking eyes and lips. But ever since I, without any proper instruction/guidance/advice, changed my tongue posture consciously(for no reason), my face has become less attractive. I am 18 now and I was considered very good looking till recently, until 15.
      And here's my doubt ma'am, do you have any air/air bubble in your mouth under the tongue while maintaining the correct tongue posture Ma'am? If so, does maintaing the tongue posture like that cause a slight pain/discomfort under the tongue while doing so?
      And I am sorry for writing a lot Ma'am, it was to give as much details as I can so you can have an easier time analyzing my problem. Hope you reply to my question above ma'am!🤗
