In the voting phase of the game, there will be a hint that reads if someone on Team Kira is chosen to investigate, nothing will be found. No IDS nor the Death Note. In that sense, it pays to be trusted, but it's less likely that L would choose someone they don't trust anyway, so the game moreso rewards an aggressive follower who can afford to be voted out so long as they've already passed on the IDs to Kira... and a passive Kira.
