Ever wondered why Wainwright included Mungrisdale Common in his Pictorial Guides? It's a question often asked by fell walkers in the Lake District. Well in this film Andy Beck the artist behind the award winning book The Wainwrights in Colour puts forward his theories as to why this nondescript fell made it into the final 214. He also explains why the recognised summit isn't the "Wainwright" summit and points out one of AW's rare mistakes in writing his acclaimed guidebooks. This film will not change things, it has been produced purely out of interest and for a bit of fun.

Really enjoyed your walk and explanation. Been on it 3 times but just as a tack on to Blencathra. This route is so much nicer, thank you.
Remember going into that deep pool in 1974 when I was 10 ...red hot day...was with my Dad...not another soul around...went from Maryport on a Honda 175 ...great memories.

Very informative video Andy. I remember crossing Mugrisedale Common at Easter 1986 with snow on the ground when we were going from Blencathra to Great Calva whilst receeing the route for members of our running club who were attempting the Bob Graham Round that forthcoming summer.
Stayed at the field centre ten years or so ago & this brought back many happy memories of walking around that area...love the drone work and it all adds up to an enjoyable ‘arf hours viewing, so thanks for that Andy.

Thanks so much Andy. I have been to MC twice, once on my own as part of my 214 and again with a friend last Sunday as part of his 214. The first time I went up the wrong gill and had to climb the fence you mentioned (whoops!) so I am pleased to have seen the Cloven Stone and the Stone Men in your video.

Thanks very much. Showing your obsession a bit there!! On stone men, I have heard said (and I think I agree), that they were marker points to get off the tops. I have seen ones in the Yorkshire Dales that look as if that was the purpose.
Thanks Philip. Yes, the stone men are interesting. I have heard and tend to agree that they were shepherds cairns for locating themsleves in bad weather.

Your argument to why it was included seems completely sound to me. Kudos for taking the time to find AW's summit. I am guessing most 214'ers just aim for the main summits. I wonder how many actually seek out both summits. Probably not very many.
Thanks Chris. Most folk will just head for the highest point or the prominent feature and will not be too bothered about this sort of attention to detail regarding AW's summits.

Hi Andy, I am now having to go and find your stone, I am too pedantic, but there you go another day on the fell plus it is only 20 minuets from home to parking the car
