I always remember the abuse John Barnes used to take from opposition supporters, he was always down that left wing very close to the fans and it blew my mind how professional he was. Monkey chants, throwing bananas, it was scandalous. Barnsey would silence them by setting up a goal or scoring himself, he was an absolute joy to watch.. And to this day he is a great guy. 👍
I know he got a lot of abuse back then. He delt with it well. I just put a post on where you can blantely hear the crowd singing you ××××× b×××××d, not nice . But that was football for you back then. I went there with utd I don't know if it was 89.or 90. The season we dick you 5~1 at old Trafford. Even your fans there kicked off in the seats next to the family stand. . Still tho what a intimidating ground to go
I always look at our two games away to Millwall in '88-89 with bittersweet memories. The league game at the Den was just 3 or 4 days before Hillsborough, and if we'd lost this FA Cup tie then the 96 wouldn't have died.
He wasnt that good. Good at club level. Never consistent at international level, easily out fought in the physical battles. he had a great left foot and amazing passing ability but he was not the complete player.
Remember this well, I was in the Cold Blow Lane End, we played well especially in the second half and was having a great season but Liverpool were just that bit better on the day and deserved winners. Happy days.
@@michaelmorgan8539 can't do anymore than sell your allocation can ye....!!! But agree you brought a great mob to Liverpool....as we knew you would....!! Respect lad....
Remember millwall singing the week before on telly... Liverpool Liverpool will you come down to the den...?? Well you got your answer...!!! we had a great mob down there and more than held our own....we never kicked it off away (after heysel) but we travelled everywhere in large numbers....and if you wanted it then we had it... we don't need to write books etc....we just went...!
"And if you wanted it then we had it" Ian, you are a classic example why someone like myself stopped supporting Liverpool Football Club back in 1985 shortly after the Heysel Stadium Disaster! Never been back to Anfield ever since!! Although i did leave my scarf at the Shankly gates in respect to the 96 People who Did die a few years later at Hillsborough.
9.14. To 9.20. The racist abuse John Barnes was receiving from the crowd. And the way he just delt with it. Credit to him. Imagine that in today's game. The way it was back then. Part and parcel at the cold blow lane. . .#Mumufmufc ok
@richardjasper6488 Never mind Barnes diving, he dragged the defender back. I`m surprised the ref gave the foul against Barnes as they never usually gave much against LFC, this was a rare decision indeed- one for the scrap-books.
I thought I heard the monkey chants to Barnes, then it was confirmed. It was sad and pathetic 30 years ago, and beyond discouraging that it’s still something we occasionally hear.
Heartbreaking to think a lot of fans will have been at this game then go onto lose their lives at the semi final

Hear Hear John McMahon!
Most underrated footballer of all time
He has said that it didn't effect him one bit because he viewed those who booed him as uneducated peasants 🤣 Pure class
Best player Ive ever seen for Liverpool peak Barnes 87-90

Barnes, best player on the field by a country mile, must be up there with Maradona

As a kid I used too think aldo and rush were brother's
As a kid you used to call your mum, mummy and your dad, daddy
That Cold Blow Lane end is fucking RAMMED. COYL!!!!
We should have bought Sheringham, instead we took Jimmy Carter. The empire was cracking.
That was a deffo pen on john barnes.! Barnes get obstructed first before being taken down.
We took a right crew down that day it was mental at the. End...
It was mental at the start pal. Never seen a bigger away support at The Den.
Yes you did but not as many we took to your ground

It was on the live footage at the end Kev
Scousers had bit in corner 🤔

All credit to the great Barry Davies, calling out the monkey chants from the Millwall mob

Was a great turn out. Even Peter Howitt
Millwall's firm agreed years ago that no one would write books. Any books claiming to be Wall are lying

this is rubbish. liverpool often didnt fancy it away, particularly in london.

John Barnes - Jamaican Pelè !
That Thumbnail, Tweedledee Tweedledum 🤣.
How was that early Barnes attack not a penalty!?

Didn't they replace ian rush with a double?
Top video mate
aldo much nicer guy than rush
Hmmmm. Rush was a shy introvert by nature and never looked very comfortable being interviewed, especially earlier on in his career.
Not so Aldridge had a much bigger ego than Ian Rush and Ian was more intellectual and a much better analyst when interviewed
Have a friend who was a neighbour of IR in Wales, went to his wedding etc and said he's a lovely guy.
Rush had better taste in music.
