  • Boeing 737-200 / 737-2V6 Advanced takes off at the Airport Bern-Belp in Switzerland. It is a privately owned aircraft with registration marks VP-CAQ. Listen to the distinctive Pratt & Whitney JT8D engine sounds! The take off trembled the ground!
    The 737-200 Advanced belongs to the 737 Original series which is the first generation of the popular 737 aircraft family. With over 1'100 aircraft produced the -200 model has been in operation worldwide. Nowadays, most -200 model are phased out due to noise emissions and fuel efficiency.

    I love how the engine sounds increase; and then at 2:47 you realise ; here she goes now! And the way the front & rear landing gear lift off almost simultaneously; makes these older aircraft look more graceful & effortless on takeoff.

      These old engines were loud, but they had no balls on them. They weren't powerful.

    • @lovefordgalaxie
      @lovefordgalaxie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree and disagree. Disagree, because for me a airplane sound is found on a DC-3, or a Lockheed Super Constellation, or a Boeing B-17, just as examples. And agree, because as far as jets go, turbo jets sound the best (of the worse).

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Adam Ohm completely false! Actually these TURBOJET engines were very powerful for a given size/weight of engine. For PURE RAW POWER a Turbojet engine is one of the most powerful there is. However they are VERY inefficient and burn/waste a lot of fuel.
      That is exactly why they were replaced with modern TURBOFAN engines, which redirect a lot of the exhaust to spin compressor blades to create more thrust. However, this exhaust is not as powerful as burning the fuel itself.
      The ratio of air traveling through the core of the engine (to be burned to produce direct thrust) to the amount of redirect air producing thrust, is called the _"bypass ratio"_ . Today's modern geared "HIGH BYPASS RATIO" engines are very efficient and literally "sip" fuel compared to the older turbojets, albeit producing less thrust.

    • @zhiqiandu3110
      @zhiqiandu3110 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adam Ohm They work better at supersonic range. New turbofans with large bypass ratio can not. In terms of power, thin pipes win but fitted on airliner the energy mostly go to high speed exhaust.

      That 737-200 did have a turbofan BUT it's an ultra low by pass turbofan that make it just as noisy as a turbojet! I was on one of those and my gosh it was so noisy that kids back in those days were traumatised and thought a Boeing 747-400 powered by either a General Electric CF6 or Rolls Royce RB211 would be even worse (noisier at least). In my experience a General Electric CF6 and Rolls Royce RB211 did surprised such kids back in those days as they were a lot quieter and for me (when I was an older kid) they were lot more powerful.

      Yeah, I wish the older, loud jets would come back. In my home country of Australia, the only loud jets I could hear nowadays are the modern Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets from the Royal Australian Air Force, based at a place called Amberley west of the Queensland capital of Brisbane. Back when I was a kid, we'd have louder jets around such as Boeing 727 freighters, General Dynamics F-111s and/or even 737 classics, such as the one and only 200 series once used on services between Brisbane and Norfolk Island. Sadly, today's jets are becoming much more quieter, although we may get a loud jet from overseas every now and again.

    Sitting in a window seat of an early 737 about '72 and watching the engines, with no apparent moving parts, and then feeling that tremendous push as we powered up just baffled and perplexed me. I understood their makeup and basics and their basic operation, but that just didn't do it for me in understanding that strong push. I became obsessed and became an engineer.

We all thought the 737-200 left service in Chile so many years ago, but now it is operated by Mineral airlines. We were lucky enough to have time to film it while departing SCL. And it's impressive... it sounds like a fighter aircraft XD. Really missed those 90s times, when this aircraft was so common as modern-day Airbus A319/320s.

      The CFM56s and IAE V2500s which are fitted on the 737-400 or later and A320s have a sweet sound too but not as pronounced as the JT8D. Wide body commercial jets and small to midsize private jets tend to have the best sounding high bypass turbofans.

    Back before the remainder of these aircraft had hushkits, the climbouts were an unbelievable experience to witness from the ground. They’d rotate, climb out and this beautiful rumble would thunder across the field. You can hear it a little bit here, actually. More modern aircraft really are amazing. Once they rotate and climb away, you almost can’t hear them anymore. So engines have gotten both significantly more powerful and significantly quieter. Crazy....

    • @matthiashaenni
      @matthiashaenni  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right. The engines have developed unbelievably in the past few decades. I especially like the BAe 146. British Aerospace wanted the BAe146 to be able to operate from small airfields with short and even unpaved runways. There were plans for a 2 engined version but it couldn't be realised because there weren't engines with sufficient power on the market. The BAe 146 was eventually equipped with four engines which made operations from short runways possible. If the BAe 146 were developed nowadays it would most probably be equipped with only two engines.

      I actually flew on one of those back in the day. Those were such cool little aircraft. Four engines on high mounted wings for this tiny little airliner. The view of the wing was totally unique and almost surreal

    I remember living in an apartment about 5 miles away from Hobby Airport. The 6am to Love Field was my alarm clock! 737-200 taking off.

      Thank you for sharing your memory! The sound of a Boeing 737-200 taking off can indeed be quite distinctive, especially with its JT8D engines. The Boeing 737-200, with its iconic "T-tail" design, was known for its reliability and versatility. It's fascinating how certain sounds can bring back memories. Your story adds a special touch to the aviation experience. Have a great day! ✈️🌅

      Of course turbojet engines sounded like jets. The new quieter and fuel efficient turbofan engines don't sound like jets, because they aren't turbojet engines.

      Thank you for your comment! The Boeing 737-200 ADV is indeed a beautiful classic with its iconic design and powerful JT8D engine sounds. Did you know that the JT8D engines are known for their distinctive high-pitched whine during takeoff, making them easily recognizable to aviation enthusiasts? It's always a pleasure to witness the grace and power of these classic aircraft. 😊✈️
