@@coreyarndt I've never liked a song with microtones, and always found weird time signatures to be forced. no idea how you managed to put both of them in and actually make it sound GOOD
read the title, expected intentionally bad music, got a new addition to my playlist (also C-half-flat here barely even sounds microtonal, it sounds like a normal C but particularly depressed)
Wow this sounds so cool Fr, it sounds like a video game sound track for a level where you have to navigate through the jungle Loving the 11/8 and the microtones, they fit right into the vibe of the piece
Thanks! They can be tricky at first, but the more you listen to music in odd meters and the more you mess around with them the more natural they become
As a microtonal composer and music theorist, this is piece is really nice to hear, the tones here seem natural in a way many mathematically consistent systems don't. So you're saying you jst sort of intuitively chose those microtones since the piano didn't have the note you were looking for? That's fascinating... My best guess is influences from Arabic music, since the F half-sharp in the key of E is akin to the Arabic scale "bayati", but the C half-flat kind of stumps me. I instinctually think it's part of a very common microtonal chord called the harmonic seventh, but the root would have to be D in order for that to be true. I can see it maybe as a quarter-tone up from the fifth for color but other than that, I couldn't say. Fascinating!!
Thanks for the compliments! I think I agree that the F half-sharp probably came from Arabic influences. I put a lot less thought into that one, and it was kinda just picked for a bit of extra spice since I was already using microtones (which was not originally planned). But yeah, the C half-flat was added when I was writing the little 32nd note ornaments in the alto flute melody at bars 13 and 15. This may sound strange, but my composing process feels very akin to carving a sculpture. Like I'm digging around to try to reveal the music's pure form, rather than building it up myself. It's not that I hear the "correct" notes in my head, but that I can tell when I've not used the notes the music wanted. I'm so used to usually writing in flat keys that I forgot the B's weren't flat, so when I wrote a C at the peak of those ornaments and it sounded too high I tried lowering it to a B. That's when I remembered what key I was in, and that that was the same note I had started on. I tried moving the whole ornament up and down diatonically but nothing was sounding right, so seeing as I had recently been playing with microtones I tried using the C half-flat and it sounded right. I've got no clue why this melody wanted that note, I'm not sure I've ever decided on using microtones that way before. The last time I used them it was the whole gimmick of the piece. The second chord in each of those bars happened to be A minor, so I decided to also lower the C's in the strings to make a sort of neutral chord. I took a quick look at your channel, and I'm definitely going to be giving your stuff a listen. You evidently know a whole lot more about microtones than me, so hopefully I can learn a bit from your work
If the drums were a bit more epic this would be a PERFECT epic movie soundtrack. It's amazing as it is, don't get me wrong, as of right now it'd be perfect for an RPG
So the way you use 11/8 sounds basically like alternating 6/8 and 5/8, which builds some fun irritation if you don't really pay attention to the rhythm! I wonder about grouping the rhythm differently also. And I would say the microtones sounded good, they were not super noticable for me, but I missed them when they went away again in the end.
There's definitely a lot of different ways you could group the 11. It's probably a good thing you didn't notice the microtones cause that means they aren't sticking out too bad lol
It's actually interesting that you say that because the first pass of this piece was heavily inspired by Waterfall. That version didn't go very far tho. I just wasn't feeling it
This song has lyrics and the lyrics are "1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2, 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2." Great song. I think somewhere between the first 123 and the last 312 my brain switched between which one it was counting. Like my brain just kind of interpolated between these two spacings: "1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2" "1 2 | 3 1 2 | 3 1 2 | 3 1 2" This time signature is new but it doesn't feel unnatural in the slightest. If anything it feels more natural that 3/4 or even 4/4 which feel more robotic in comparison.
I wasn't with you at first because the piano and percussion stays pretty consistent, but after thinking about more I realize the melody does switch up the division a bit. I still feel it all in 123|123|123|12 but I can definitely see how it could be felt differently. I'm glad you liked it!
So good, love it. A whole album like this would be amazing. I was quite surprised to learn that you only used MuseScore 4 to make this, the instruments sound great. I reckon you could make some really cool stuff if you'd work in a DAW. We're waiting for more!
Thank you! I've actually thought about trying to write an album before but it's just a bigger commitment than I'm willing to get into at the moment. I've messed with DAW's in the past, but Musescore has always fit with my workflow better. I still use them from time to time if I've got something specific in mind that Musescore can't accomplish. And don't worry more is coming soon. I'm just about finished with a wind quintet that will come out soon and there will be plenty more after
Are you talking about the virtual instruments I used for the audio? Those are just the MuseSounds that are free to use with Musescore. They can be downloaded from the MuseHub, but they only work with Musescore unfortunately.
The audio actually is Musescore as well. I don't know if you've been following Musescore's development, but they released all new sounds, called MuseSounds, alongside Musescore 4 a couple of years ago. Musescore 4 already had huge improvements, including an all new audio engine and VST support, but the new sounds are really quite good. In my opinion, Musescore has become the best notation software out there, especially considering that it's free and that Finale is gone.
Some people definitely try to make odd time signatures sound strange, and there's definitely a time for that, but I think they can just as easily be made to flow together in a natural way. There's some east European dances that come to mind, where people are brought up learning to dance to odd meters
Microtones don’t sound forced and neither does the time signature- so really freaking good
Ay thanks man. I wasn't even going to use the microtones but for whatever reason they sounded right for the melody

Was gonna comment this exact thing, really the only song I’ve listened to that achieved this
So suspended in the music that i completely went out of the rhythm of my sight reading
Oh wow! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
was so expecting to hear the 11/8 harmonic interval lmao
