I added rear steer to my Capra too. I bought an entire all metal aftermarket Capra front axle for around US$50 which came with everything including steering linkages. I wanted the rear suspension to work so I cut away part of the cage to clear the full size steering servo. In order for the servo to clear the receiver box, I 3D printed 5mm thick spacers to move the servo back enough to avoid hitting the box. Works great. I'm using a Radiolink RC6GS transmitter which has a rotary knob for channel 3 which is used for the rear steer. This knob is located near and to the rear of the normal steering wheel but it's too small to reach and operate with my left thumb while controlling the throttle at the same time. Solved this by 3D printing a new knob which is bigger and is textured for better grip. So now I can front steer with my right hand and control throttle and rear steer with my left, all at the same time. Dig is currently activated with a toggle switch but I may move it to a push button located near my left thumb. This way I can keep my hands on the controls and never take my eyes off the truck.
I'm about to buy a Capra and have been watching lots of videos. I know this video is a year old, but if you do any more bench work videos, an additional light behind the cameras would help for our viewing. Looking forward to my trip to Utah this summer.
Exactly what I needed for parts requirements. I run Radiolink and tried the pot control for 4ws on another vehicle and didn't like it. I instead shifted to mixing (slaving) the rear into a 3-position switch for rear steer on/off with the main steer. Works great. I don't know if the GT5 can do that . Looking at your crawling videos I can see why you need variable. I don't. Another example of setting the rig up for the normal terrain.
Totally appreciate this video man I would have been working on this for months if I wouldn’t have watched. You showing all the parts needed was a life saver!!! I’m also very envious of the crawling landscapes you show. Thanks again!!
Very cool I've been waiting for you to do a tutorial good job with explaining my one request is the lighting would be better if it was on the other side of you 😀 I will look into buying that controller
Trevor that's a fantastic transmitter, feels good in hand, lite weight, 20 separate vehicles, trucks, cars and boats. Cheap for what it's capable of doing. Win-win. Imo..
thank you , your the man, all your info is very grateful, can we buy a front axle all ready assembled????? now a year later? i have a capra 4ws but Iam making one too, and cant find the set I need,
Good information just bought a used capra store return super cheap adding r.steer.thanks race nitro truggys need crawler info.have that radio for my x factor awesome video s on the rocks
Thank you sir for all your work and helping me fully understand this process. Always wanted to have 4WSing (I hope that's a word) on my "Goat". So thanks to you I will. 👍👍. Please post more...
I am running 2 protek 370TBL’s, Team TnT high clearance links and I am running 90mm Dravtech shocks!! Power plant is SW4 with a yellow jacket out runner motor. Also running a reefs 99 for the dig servo. I am running brass up front.
i wish you went over how you actually control the transmitter. i have the same transmitter with rear steer on channel 6, even bought a clamp on thumb wheel and i still struggle with controlling everything
The Spektrum family of 5-channel radios (DX5C, DX5 Rugged, DX5 Pro) all have full channel mixing for four wheel steering, including selectable mix for front only, rear only, crab, and four wheel steer. Also, many low-profile servos will clear the back of the the cage without cutting.
@@Braindog I would say the weakness with the GT5 is the inability to assign the 4WS function to a specific button. If you wanna use it, you have to use the menu wheel, and it's really tough to steer and operate that menu scroller at the same time. I will say that setting up 4WS on the GT5 is an absolute breeze compared to the Spektrum.
Hey thanks for the videos. Love the scenery you get to crawl through.. I've been thinking about doing this.. so you think a real strong servo is needed for the rear or how strong should I go with? I'm trying to build this body more on the light side

Hey Logan, loving my 4WS Capra. Just purchased a FS GT5 and swapping it out with the factory Spectrum receiver is not as straight forward as I thought. Can you help me out with this? I’ll be in St George in June and looking forward to go wheeling. Any help would be appreciated.
Hopefully you see this I know it’s an old video, I bought the 4WS capra RTR. I’m wanting to add dig so I need a new receiver. My question is sense the spectrum is a 2 and 1 system can I even use this receiver? And if so what do I need to do to get it set up? I don’t want to change the motor or anything like that yet.
I totally mean this in a positive way, but thanks to you I bought a Bully2 MOA and now I'm thinking of a scratch build Capra with all the good stuff I see in your vids haha. I have a UTB18 already and am thinking of RWS for it as well as other upgrades before I go full-size Capra. I watched your video on the UTB18 and wanted to know if you have tried anything crazy with it yet? Thanks again for the great videos and info!
@@westdesertwheeler Same here. I am going with a Holmes Revolver and Mamba X2 to start. I used your affiliate link and have a GT5 on the way and ordered all the other goodies through my local RC Shop including the steering axle for the rear. Will probably put the stock servo in back and get a good one for up front. Can't wait to see what you do with yours.
Never thought about eliminating my rear springs. 🤔 I may need to try that. I saw on one of your other vids, that you removed your spring caps on your front shocks. How has that been working?
Hey West Desert Wheeler, REAT video !!!!PLEASE get back to gigiboxa and I as these two P/N (AXI31489 & AX31403 )do look the same but ARE of different dimensions.
I am thinking about building a kit capra and making it rear steer while I’m building it. Do you think it would be cheaper to buy the kit then convert it to 4ws or to just buy the 4ws rtr. Thanks
@@westdesertwheeler …🤔…thats what I suspected. Hope the spectrum motor does work with the hobbywing 1080 I ordered. Otherwise I will get either a holmes or tekin.
Hey Logan. Now that you have your Capra CMS mount available, do you think it could be modified to work in the rear for rear steer, opposed to having the servo mounted on the axle? thinking of taking my original rtr Capra and going Rear Steer with it using your mount. LMK what you think.
So weird seeing this vid 2yrs after it was made because we now just have a rtr 4ws capra and its so damn good

I need to trim my cage as well. Do you have a link to the file for the 5mm thick spacers? Or I suppose I could try washers too...

Just a heads up. . .I think the knuckle screws are AX31403 instead of AX31489.
I have been wondering about this. Thanks for posting.
Thank you! I hadn't considered using a dial for rear steer. I think that is going to be a game changer for my driving.
funny timing on this, just subbed last night and did some research on all the parts needed to do this!

Do you have to flip the ring gear with a dlux trans?

Awesome video 📹 👍🙂
I got the screws but the don't fit in the knuckle I don't get it
When I got to 4ws and hit the inhibit button it won't let me scroll up

In the works RC

The 4ws is the cheaper alternative

How about the drive shaft rotation?
What do you mean? The axles rotate the same if you swap ends. So a front will still work fine on the rear
