Global National: July 21, 2024 | What’s next for Democrats after Biden drops out of election?

  • U.S. President Joe Biden said on Sunday that he will not be seeking a second presidential term, but will continue to serve out his current term as president. His announcement comes in the wake of a disastrous debate with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last month, which threw the Democratic party into chaos just months before the U.S. election. Though Biden is endorsing Vice-President Kamala Harris, the news sent America into uncharted territory. Jackson Proskow explains.
Plus, Biden's decision not to seek re-election was expected by many, but his announcement was nonetheless a political earthquake. Leaders from across the political spectrum - from Washington to those across the globe - have been reacting to the news, which could have consequences reaching far beyond the U.S. Redmond Shannon has more on the responses from world leaders.
Despite Biden's decision not to run for re-election, his long-lasting political career is sure to leave an impact on U.S. history. From pulling out troops from Afghanistan, to stemming the flow of illegal immigrants, to kickstarting the American economy after the pandemic, he also led NATO to help defend Ukraine against Russia's invasion. Eric Sorensen takes a look at Biden's time as president, and what his legacy may be remembered as.
Fire crews in western Canada are preparing for what could be an explosive few days. A heat wave is stretching into an unprecedented fourth week across much of B.C. and Alberta, with temperatures reaching above 30 degrees Celsius and thick smoke creating serious health concerns. And as Heather Yourex-West explains, forecasters warn the worst could be yet to come.
Despite the national auto theft rate being down seventeen per cent this year, drivers may have noticed that auto insurance premium costs are climbing. Anne Gaviola has more on what's driving the frustrating trend, and why it's taking a bigger bite of your household budget.
And finally, the warming planet is bad news for fish stocks and marine ecosystems around the world. Now, a new United Nations (UN) report has put figures to just how much those resources could drop due to climate change over the next 75 years. Heidi Petracek now on what that could mean for Canada.
