  • Here's Ellen Greene's performance of her iconic I-want song, "Somewhere That's Green," during the July 1st performance of Encores! Off-Center's 2015 concert production of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's "Little Shop of Horrors." This video also features Tracy Nicole Chapman as Chiffon, Marva Hicks as Crystal, and Ramona Keller as Ronnette.
    This concert production was directed by Dick Scanlan, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox, and featured musical direction by Chris Fenwick.
    This video is a combination of three separate recordings. Due to the recent nature of this production, only a selection of songs and clips will be uploaded.

    Thirty years on, no one can do this song so comedically, yet still so heartbreakingly well as Ellen Greene.

    I adore how this started a quite comedic - her silly little dream. But the way Ellen encompases Audrey is amazing. The complete shift in her emotion at the end is truly astonishing and beautiful. She makes your heart ache for Audrey, and what she's been through.

      This. Her brilliance is knocking the audience on its ass with the last verse. It's just heartbreaking. Tragic, actually.

    Oh my god this is awesome. I love how she masterfully changed the way she sang the song to accommodate her aged voice. This is simultaneously the funniest and saddest performance of this song

    1st off: I'm bawling. Bawling. 2nd: Thanks to whomever recorded this. This is a musical theater treasure as are you for capturing it so beautifully. Not easy to do so well in the dark! 3rd: I mean, this is a Tony award-winning performance in one song. Other-worldly. 4th I was so lucky to have my folks take me to see the original production down at Orpheum in the 80's, which I'll never forget, ever. 5th: We see and hear Ellen Green, this magnificent performer, and wonder "Why didn't we have more of her over all these years?" It's more than amazing Audrey is HERS, but what about so many other roles I know she would have been good for. It's all a bit bittersweet. But this performance...Oh my god.

    I saw the great Ellen Greene in the original production on 2nd Avenue and, though I've changed A LOT, Greene remains unassailable in this role. She makes every lyric meaningful and feels every emotion completely. What a beautiful performance.

    July 1, 2015 was the most electric night ever in the theatre. Don't know how the building survived the wild applause and stomping. Her every move and line was special. Don't know why she didn't go right to Carnegie hall for a concert and in reality, she would have been the best dolly since Channing. Midler was midler, pure schlock and ham from beginning to end. Undeserved tony.

    After 34 years...
    Ellen still slips into Audrey as seamlessly as stepping into your favorite pair of slippers.
    There is absolutely noone on earth who can even touch her shadow in this role...
    She lives each & every word, every line she sings.
    So, Sorry for whatever remake they do,
    It's doomed from the start because Ellen is Audrey
    then now & forever.

    This song is so funny and sad at the same time. I find myself crying most times when I hear it and it catches me off guard every single time. A testament not only to Alan Menken and Howard Ashman as writers, but to Ellen Greene as a performer.

      It's the campiness of the whole musical. While most people pine for beautiful mansions in California or hotels in Las Vegas, all Audrey wishes for is a simple house in a rural neighborhood, where most people do have.

      I think that previous message misses the point... A victim of domestic abuse dreaming of being freed of the only treatment she has ever experienced..her confusion over what 'love' really should be... You're right. It's comical but heartbreaking simultaneously.

    Interesting version. In earlier versions I always thought this song was truly her dream, hopeful that it would come to pass. This version my take on it is that this is more wistful, she knows on some level it will never happen. Regardless, stunning performance(s) every time she performs.

    Brilliant woman, such a talent, not many knock me out but this woman...ahhhhhh outstanding, the way she jumps from comedy to heartbreaking, one moment that the voice is so baby like and feminine then BOOM, straight from the gut, heart and soul, such control, charisma and power, she never fails to astound me, a rare gem indeed.

    It's interesting to see that Ellen Greene has become a broad exaggerated characterization of herself. Carol Channing did the same thing as she kept recreating Dolly.

    • @FlimFlamFloom
      @FlimFlamFloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Did you ever see her in the original off-broadway production? This is EXACTLY how she was. They were all directed to be broad, as the show was played as a pastiche. The film changed a lot of that, but that wasn't how it was done live.

      +Kurt Rivero Levittown. A pre-planned Long Island community that came into being just after WWII. Audrey dreams of a life in the suburbs and, in her mind, Levittown is the epitome of that life. She would be happy with someplace half as nice as Levittown.

    Everyone laughs at this song, but I think it's very poignant. Her life has bee terrible, so she's not dreaming of wealth and fame; what she wants is to feel safe, secure and cared for with someone who is stable and whom she can trust. Her life has been so chaotic that she dreams of order. Her dream is in line with trauma and would also help her to cope with it. To me this song makes total sense. She's being realistic but also honest about what she needs and truly wants.

  • @FlimFlamFloom
    @FlimFlamFloom 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I'm never not impressed with her performance. Others in the current off-broadway production may sing louder or with more acrobatics, but no one has yet to touch the perfect combination of what Greene brings to Audrey. Not a single person.

      It’s an encore. Basically the cast learn the roles in a few days and then perform it concert style like this for an audience. So they have scripts because they don’t get long to practice like they usually would
