    That first game proves a bit of really bad life advice: It's only illegal if you get caught.

    Thanks for the cool (and apparently well-rehearsed) lecture!
    The picture of Capablanca in the background makes it even more intense, like the Master is overseeing the presentation of his art.
    Congratulations.

    Kinda funny because there is a huge portrait of Capablanca staring at Jonathan which is pretty much visible at 31:09 when the board projection vanishes...

    The Marshall attack is a gambit, it is just that there is a Marshall gambit in a different opening so we use different names.

    Rg6 at the end, instead of Bxf7+ sets up a windmill checkmate, no? Maybe not "best" but certainly pretty.

    26:49 Here the engine says white has a mate in 15. Marshall's defense fell short of optimal.

  • @aliturk6619

    At 4:11 Johnathan says Nf6 leads to the Berlin endgame, but it's actually the main move -- the bishop being on a4 means that the regular Berlin idea doesn't work --when the knight retreats, it's not attacking the bishop anymore. But black can play b5 and get a decent position.

    • @JohmmyN
      @JohmmyN 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

  • @mads4387

    It's probably been pointed out, but Capablanca played 14. Qf3, not 14. d4. ALSO Marshall played 32... Bb4, not 32... Be5

    I'm kind of new to chess so I'm wondering.. At 20:00, could white go Queen F4, protecting the bishop? Or am I missing something horrible that would happen to me if I went there?

      Qe1+ with the rooks coming in

  • @Greg-xs5py
    @Greg-xs5py 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think he has it wrong at 16:25:00. When the white queen is on f3, the white queen simply takes the f7 pawn check. After the black rook takes the queen, the white e file rook checkmates the king with rook to e8.

  • @MCRWV-bk1wf
    @MCRWV-bk1wf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    at 38:25 White plays Queen d2. but earlier you said that Black really doesn't want to trade queens. so why does White not play Queen d1?
    I'm not a good / experienced chess player so hopefully I don't bother you with my question...

    • @jngroelae
      @jngroelae 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is nothing wrong with Qd1. After ...Bg4 you can play the Queen back to d3 (if you want a draw) or you can play a move like Qd2. This is just a normal position with many options for both sides. Black has the initiative and White is a pawn up.

    when white plays c7c6. why is b3*d5 bad? It gives black both bishops, but the dangerous knight is eliminated and black's pawn structure is ruined.

    • @iamthere135
      @iamthere135 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      whites light squared bishop is usually too valuable, yes you got rid of their dangerous knight but you got rid of your more important defending piece, it's a trade off that is generally bad for whites in the Ruy Lopez, whites light square bishop is worth too much

    I'm new to chess and I didn't realize that "Castling" is illegal? Or is it just illegal when the king is in Check?

    • @sergiohuaman6084
      @sergiohuaman6084 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Castling is illegal when king is checked and also when a square you pass through (f1/8, d1/8) or the square you end up on is attacked by an opponent's piece.

  • @RyanPondFriend

    18:00 - can't black move his queen to H1 - checkmate? King can't take because of the knight, can't move because it will still be in check on H2 and F1, and white's queen is blocked by the pawn on G2?

  • @sooooooooDark
    @sooooooooDark 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    while watching this went thru some lines with stockfish
    it may be known to many players but i still found it interesting:
    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qg5 6. Nf3 Qxg2 7. Rg1 Qh3 8. Rg3 Qh5 9. Rg5 Qh3 10. Rg3 Qh5 11. Rg5 Qh3 12. Rg3
    the engine says 0 (like in "draw") right after the first black queen move
    obviously moving the queen to d4 on move 5 is better for black (-0.6 vs 000000)
    however if u want a draw as black u may consider the line above

    22:21 is it possible to play kA3 to activate the rook and maybe trap the queen (QxA1, Sb1)?

    • @Strade8
      @Strade8 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      what does it mean Sb1? i don't know the symbol "S". Do you mean Knight back to B1? I don't see how is it possible to capture the queen after that is trapped..

    • @micha1787
      @micha1787 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strade8 sorry, my mistake. of course I meant kB1. The queen would be perfectly closed by ponds and knight defended by bishop b3 and king, am I wrong?

    • @Strade8
      @Strade8 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure you are right, it is trapped, but I don't see how you can take it. Looks trapped but safe. I think black can menage to free it bringing down the pawns (maybe the rooks too) before white can menage to attack it (he has to attack it with the bishop, and to do so he has to move at least 4 times, so black has here 5 moves to free himself winning a rock for his effort).

    4:17 taking on e4 leads to an open ruy. Very sharp. Not a Berlin endgame. Come on, dude.

    • @jacobtarallo4370
      @jacobtarallo4370 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I hate to tell you this, but you are actually incorrect. Allow me to explain properly.
      The Berlin Endgame is reached after 1. e5 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Nxe4 5. d4 Nd6 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. dxe5 Nf5 8. Qxd8 Kxd8
      What's the difference between this and the line shown in the video? The subtle, but very important move a6 was played in the video, prepping black for b5. Also, Nd6 no longer comes with tempo against the bishop.
      The open ruy lopez is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6. If instead, 6. d4 Nd6? Black is no longer hitting the bishop and is therefore worse.
      The move a6 makes all of the difference!
