    I bought a brand new Craftsman self propelled lawn mower 30 years ago. That POS when through drive wheels like a kid goes through Halloween candy. After about 10 years of that crap, I disassembled that mower and scrapped the aluminum and steel. I then purchased a Honda self propelled lawn mower. My Honda is still running as good as it did day-one and it still has its original front drive wheels. 🙂 Craftsman lawn mowers are one of the many reasons why Sears took a royal dump with customer loyalty and why they are near Chapter 13. BTW, I have one acre.

      It was a very bad design.

    Also check the drive shaft bearings in the adjusters. Mine were bad causing the drive gear to float on the plastic. It ate up the plastic on a new wheel in three months.
    I also had intermittent wheel lockup problems. I traced that to steel balls from the drive shaft bearing that got out of the bearing assembly and were floating around inside the wheel assembly. They occasionally got between the drive gear teeth and the wheel gear teeth.
    Finally, check that the wheel spindle is parallel to the drive shaft. If not, the drive gear teeth will not align with the wheel teeth and will eat the plastic teeth. If it is not parallel, the adjuster mechanism or the mower body where the adjuster is attached is probably bent and needs to be straightened or replaced.

    Hey thanks for the vid. I was having the issues of limited drive and the wheels locking up. After watching, took off the wheels and cleaned it up in there and ordered new wheels. BTW took 4 days get them from Sears. Just mowed my lawn and all works like charm. Got to love a simple fix!

    Big Thanks! I had all but forgotten to check the wheels along with the belt. It couldn't have been any easier if you had done it for me. Right down to the amazon link for the wheels and socket wrench size to take it on and off. ! The former "push" mower now drags me along for the ride.

    Thank you for the video. I was pretty sure it was the more expensive gear box without digging into it. A quick pop off of the wheel revealed the exact same issue. Which was contrary to all of the other videos I'd seen about the cause to similar symptoms being the much more expensive gear box. New tires on order!

    Thanks very much for this information. From the way all of this sounds this mower
    should have been recalled, or they should come out with a different design of wheel,
    maybe a composite rather than a cheap plastic. Had this very same problem, so they must be making a small fortune on wheels to be on back order. Thanks again.

    I have similar lawn mower, (CratftsB&S, 6.75). the front right tire is loose. We tighten the nut, but it is tight/secure. It seems to be the mechnisim that allows it be able to self propel. Trying to fig. out how to take that off and tighten it. Thank you.

    Wonder if you can guess my problem. My mower starts and whenever I try to hold the bar down to start the front drive wheels, the mower completely dies on me. I then haft to prime it all over again just to get it to start. I took it apart and cleaned the fuel line, replaced the spark, and cleaned the carb. Now it cranks like a champ, but still no good on front wheel wheels. I took the top off the belt part to see whats going on, but nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing to shut it off at least.

    I have the same mower except the push model. I bought this mower to save money (rather than hiring someone to mow my lawn). Bad idea. I've had to have it serviced after every other mowing, and I have 1/8 acre. After having it tuned up, new oil filter, spark plug carb cleaned AND using special, expensive no-ethanol gas, it was good for one mowing. Well covered with water-proof tarp, it still apparently drew in moisture enough so that it barely starts. This piece of metal is so highmaintenance.

  • @Paisteboy
    @Paisteboy  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @mrwiggles2
    I totally agree. It's a very poor and cheep design. I think they want it to fail so you have to buy new wheels or quite possibly a new mower. My neighbor called to order the wheels and they are on back order until July so she went out and bought a new mower. I am going to buy this mower off of her when the new wheels come in. Thanks for watching

    I have a question for you ,my wheel on the right hand side ,if you are looking at it from the back of the mower is bad i think it is a bearing that us bad how do i fix this and where can i get after market parts .Hope you can help me the grass is uneven when i mow it and if i set the wheel up one notch it does just the opp-sent .Thanks

      You have to go to a Sears parts center to order it. Or go on line. The new wheel should have a new bearing in it if I'm not mistaken.

  • @gymover
    @gymover 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the same mower and same problem, it's a design flaw for sure, not enough length of the plastic gear teeth are engaged, only about 1/4" and it's a weak spot! The pawl gear should be thicker so it protudes out more and engages more length of the plastic teeth. . Poor engineering for sure, or planned failure? Today I bought a set of two wheels for it on Ebay today for $20.19 with free shipping, which is half of Searsparts direct pricing. They are $16+ bucks each from Sears + shipping. Tha bnks for the good video! .

    I have a question. My mower has self drive and the belt keeps coming off. The pulley seems like its separated top from bottom. So instead of the pulley being one solid piece, its almost like the weld broke and now the top and bottom move independently from one another. Is that how the pulley is designed or is it broken?

    • @Paisteboy
      @Paisteboy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like it's broken. Is there a bolt that can be tightened on it so that the pully is together again? I don't have this mower or yours so I don't know exactly what it looks like.

  • @Goforit8866

    Will pushing a self propelled mower damage the gear or transmission? I got a self propelled mower but latter found out I don’t really need that function.

    • @Paisteboy
      @Paisteboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may differ from model to model but if it is belt driven from the engine to the transmission then it shouldn't damage the mower to push it.

  • @beerggls
    @beerggls ปีที่แล้ว

    So the reason the plastic gears get stripped in the first place is from dust and grass juice packing up in the valleys between gear cogs. The stuff just keeps packing up and getting mashed in there harder and thicker over time and use, whenever the gears mesh under sloppy conditions mowing. This goes on until only the tips of the metal drive gears and plastic driven gears are contacting each other, and plastic loses. This same problem can also present itself with worn and/or hogged out wheel spindle shoulder bolts, plastic drive axle bushings, or when the bush gets seized on a spindle and hoggs the boss. All those things create slop and deflection of the drive and driven gear until they deflect so much that just the tips are touching, and same result as before.

    • @Paisteboy
      @Paisteboy  ปีที่แล้ว

      So like everyone has said, it's a terrible design. I'm sure none of the mower design engineers would have thought grass would get in the gears and no home owner is going to take off the wheels periodically to clean and grease them. It's never been a normal necessary thing before and I bet it's never mentioned in the care manual.

    • @beerggls
      @beerggls ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Paisteboy
      The mower design engineers knew exactly what was gonna happen, that’s why they made it that way, or else both gears would be made of metal. Nothing sells mowers better than when your old mower breaks down and you have to go buy a new one. See how that works? Same reason they don’t put grease fittings on riding mower deck blade spindle bearings. Or the rare occasion that they do, you open it up and find sealed bearings inside the case, which the grease can’t get to the ball bearings no matter how much you pump in.

    Unfortunately this is the only mower I've ever seen this happen to. I have and have had many self propelled mowers that have never failed. The belt should be the sacrificial part, not the wheels. Especially at that price and time it takes to get new ones. ONE YEAR. Sounds more like a poor design than a sacrificial part. Thanks for watching.

    Wouldn't cost the manufacturer any more to make two steel shafts to the wheels and the wheels lock on the shaft with a key. Using plastic on a part that turns all the time- people drag it backwards with the fronts spinning- front drive gets abused- needs to be built a lot stronger. Good work.

  • @davidhenn2069
    @davidhenn2069 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why couldn't you add a bushing or several washers to move the drive gear out more so it could engage more of the wheel's gear ?

    • @Paisteboy
      @Paisteboy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Henn
      Because the same thing would have happened in less time. If it happened again I would consider it. Plus the owner would not want on half assed repairs. Not exactly sure it would have held on with the gear hanging part way off, but maybe. Mower is long gone and won't be able to find out.

    The wheel gears are sacrificial. They're supposed to break off, rather than damage the more expensive drive system.

  • @Paisteboy

    No. It's most likely not the gear box. The wheel gear is made of 100 percent plastic and will wear out long before the gear box.

      Sorry. I made this video 4 and a 1/2 years ago and don't recall exactly how the cover was fastened but from what I can see it looks like one bolt that you will need a socket to remove or it could have been a screw. Sorry it's so frustrating, but you may have to find someone with a better tool assortment. My neighbor has since sold the mower and also moved away. Best of luck.

    Probably would be a good idea for her to wash the mower thoroughly with a en hose AFTER each mowing ! ! ! You should maintain your equipment or it WILL give you problems! ! !

      @@Paisteboy LOL, I don't understand why everyone is wearing out the gears. I checked mine today and they are perfect. However, my problem is that I am cutting 1/2 acre and the treads are "slap gone" thus no traction especially when dew is present. Ordered a pair today. Also, you should remind everyone to change their oil (10W30) EVERY Spring!

    The 6.75 does not refer to horsepower. It refers to torque.

      So I've been told. I didn't know that at the time when I made this video. You know the manufacturer wants people to think that it is referring to HP by the way they label it. They got me.

      Actually they have started indicating "Torque Power" (there is no such engineering term called that, its a GIMMICK) But the These particular Troy-Bilt models do in fact, indicate Horse Power.

      I collected money for a class action suit against Craftsman mowers relating to the HP numbers.
      Also,that front gearbox will leak oil after a while. I just use 90 wt. in there.Pump it in with a hand oiler,trigger style.
