As a new rider I appreciate all the useful info from your videos! I've learned to adjust my derauler, brakes, and got a bunch of tips on riding. Thanks for helping out newbies and making us feel welcome in the community, it's much appreciated!
I`ve tryed all the think mentioned by you Neil, and by others too, seen every video, i do set my sag corectly, but unfortunately no one says that the sag should be less for and aggresive rider and more for a slowly rider or trail rider. I usually keep the 30%sag when going on trail and 25% when downhill . The forks are plush nowdays, but very stiff if sagged 20%.
Yeessss! Thank you guys for your phenomenal content. I have just gotten a full sus bike and was fiddling with the setup. This will definitely help. Thanks.
Loving your videos. I have a downhill bike and don't think I am using the suspension the best I could be. Can you do a video on how to set up your suspension for different terrain? For example, if you have too much/little rebound going down rough terrain, how will that effect the bike and you riding. How can you tell if you have set it up wrong. Any tips on suspension set up for going over roots, jumps, rough terrain etc. Thanks
I always load up the forks and see how much travel is used. I'm not into huge jumps so I like a compliant action for all the small bumps. The bump stop can do for the occasional bigger jumps.
You don't mention to equalize the pressure every ~50 psi change in pressure, as the Fox manual says. Anyway I'm having trouble with the rear shock because my correct sag appears to be at max pressure, but when I remove the pump I always loose about 20 psi... I might need a beefier rear suspension
I take air out of my fork to make it softer but I loose a lot of travel however when I add air to get travel the fork is too firm ,am I doing something wrong or am I just too light
If your bike is low end and the fork doesent have the options for pumping more or less air into it is that a bad thing? The only thing you can adjust on the fork is the preload...
I would say that the DH setting would be best because it is using all 160mm of the travel instead of around 130mm. Also the shape shifter on the Canyon Strive makes the shock during XC mode stiffer. To set sag the shock should be fully extended until you set the sag. I am not certain about this but thats what I would do.
How do you set up preload? Thats the only setting i have on my SR Suntour XCE 28 (coil fork) when i push down i only can push it half way or less when im riding it sometimes feels like there is no suspension at all.
When you are going to set your fork and you need to put air do u only put it on one side of the fork or both. (I don't have a bike yet so I don't really know what it looks like)
Yeah, it retails for $8,300 for the "Tuned" model. I was going to buy it but it was completely sold out so I had to get the one below this one the 710. Right now I'm slowly building it up to be almost like the one Neil has.
@askgmbn any tips on setting up suspension on an xc marathon bike? i have a specialized camber with 110mm travel and i seem to be using half the travel with brake dive, and on my bike thats a lot! cheers
Hi, it looks like my rear suspension is not keeping the air pressure, i pump it up to the maximum recommended as i'm heavy but after i seat on the bike the sag goes always down almost and after that it goes up but stays around the 10 mark? and wen i seat again it goes always down and it seems that the air pressure goes down to around the 60% mark and stays there?
Interesting one Ricardo! It might be equalising the pressure in the positive and negative chambers, but that shouldn't mean it looses pressure. It could just be that you've got a leaky air can by the seals or something!
@@gmbn I was looking for the service kit today but can't find my part number on the Rockshox website it says not recognized, I tried a few sellers on eBay but no answer back, I will try an service the shock to see if it works
No no, he meant bouncing, as in adding downward momentum into the bike to increase sag with momentum + gravity. You just want to isolate gravity of your own weight, without any additional downward forces. He jumps off the back end of the bike allowing the spring to recoil back into decompressed position. This won't affect his sag measurement.
is 150 travel on front and 140 travel on rear suitable for doing jumps as I did a run at Cannock the other day and I'm sure my rear shock bottomed out and as there is no o ring I can't be sure
It really depends in the size of the jumps and your technique/skill level. Most bikes are safe to jump and its sounds like you have a solid AM bike so i would say yes.
Tanner Hickman jumps aren't too big around Cannock but im sure I heard it bottom out, might just take it to local bike shop and get it serviced as it does make a slight noise when bike is being used , bike is a lapierre zesty 414 😀
i have trouble with the rebound on my forks. So if I just set up the correct ammount of sag can I play around with the rebound to have it right for me?
#askgmbn When I'm pumping up my rear shock, I get it to the pressure I want, but when I disconnect the hose, the shock loses about 20psi from a short little "psst" as the air leaks out of the connection. Is there a trick to not losing the pressure or should I just pump it up about 20psi too high and expect it to lose the pressure when I disconnect?
a little late but to my knoledge the "psst" that you are hearing while discconecting the pump is the air pressure that is held on the hose of the pump, you are not losing air pressure on your shock or fork, so you dont have to pump your shock 20 psi higher!
definitely a dropper post. I've been riding trails with one for 5 months now, I will never go back to riding without one. I heard mixed reviews from people who've swapped their 2/10 for 1/11. some loved it, some went straight back. hope that helps.
prettyjohnshill76 I do keep dropping my chain though, so i was wondering if a narrow wide chainring with a top guide and a clutch mech would be a better option. And also my bike does not have internal cable routing so my dropper post would be a slightly ugly upgrade.
I’ve got a rockshox gold 35 fork on a hardtail. Trying to set up, rockshox recommends about 135psi but when I do that it is rock hard (like Locked our). If I set it low enough to get 20% sag it feels way too soft (50 or 60 psi). Anyone have any ideas?
lewiswebstermtb I just bought a used full suspension enduro bike for £450 I'm 13 so yeah second hand bikes are cheaper and usually only have cosmetic wear so you would get a great bike for cheap
Lewis Wheatley not to bad for a starter bike...my brother has one..however the fork is terrible..i would recommend spending a little more and try get a bike with an air fork.
Lewis Wheatley I have a 2016 Cube Acid. Good starter bike and I've thrown it down some gnarly trail conditions, and done some hefty drop offs. It has taken it all in it's stride and I've never had any problems to deal with. The only thing I have done is change the tyres (came with schwalbe smart Sam's fitted) for a set of maxxis minions (a bit expensive, but worth every penny for the grip) and change the stem for a shorter one, as I felt a bit stretched out (I'm a short arse at 5ft 7).
Thanks for The Video but got a Problem 😁 I got The Perfect sag (20%) but The Suspension is fully Used on nearly Every Jump but I cant pump in 300 psi that The Suspension Isnt Used completely ? Ps. My Weight is 65 Kilogramm 😊 thanks gmbn💪🏻
If your fork/shock is compatible than I would recommend that you use volume spacers/ tokens to increase the ramp up speed. Then you shouldn't bottom out nearly as much.
Can you guys do videos on different bikes that you use. I notice Neil has like 2 160mm travel bikes and it would be cool to learn about what and why for them
As a new rider I appreciate all the useful info from your videos! I've learned to adjust my derauler, brakes, and got a bunch of tips on riding. Thanks for helping out newbies and making us feel welcome in the community, it's much appreciated!
Finally a video that explains how to change the pressure and what the sag actually does! Thank you so much
Far easily demonstrated than many recent videos regarding sag setup! Respect!
Very useful information, this is by far the best MTB channel.
Thanks Eddie!
Just as I had this problem on my ride yesterday they bring a solution the next day this channel is amazing!!
Thanks for mentioning the zip tie, I lost my O ring
Great tips Neil, if anyone knows how to set up a bike yer the man. 👊
We're glad you found this one useful! Thanks for the support! 👍
Clear, concise & comprehensive. Much thanks.
Ive got this bike, absolutely love it, floats over everything.
Can you make a "how to use preload" video. I have a bike with a coil spring suspension on the fork.
Thanks for the get content. Can you explain how the high and low pressure/rebound values work?
Yeessss! Thank you guys for your phenomenal content. I have just gotten a full sus bike and was fiddling with the setup. This will definitely help. Thanks.
Absolute best mountain bike videos and tips! Love the channel
i just Put a fox dhx 5.0 air in my scott fr 30 and it is fantastic

Any tips on suspension set up for going over roots, jumps, rough terrain etc. Thanks
i will do lower oil can in mount fromme if your comment gets more likes than the actual video itself
my fox 36 float fork looses air... any chance i can fix this for myself without having a service?
how about coil? please upload a video abot coil shock setup.
Yeah
I always load up the forks and see how much travel is used. I'm not into huge jumps so I like a compliant action for all the small bumps. The bump stop can do for the occasional bigger jumps.
I demand a GMBN Probike review of Don's bike in this video! I love this channel.
Good idea! Don do it, and do it now!!!!
Do a vid on the stealth bomber electric mtb
What bike is that, is it Scott Genius 720, great information, thanks
What is the type of this mtb 🤔🤗
You don't mention to equalize the pressure every ~50 psi change in pressure, as the Fox manual says.
Anyway I'm having trouble with the rear shock because my correct sag appears to be at max pressure, but when I remove the pump I always loose about 20 psi...
I might need a beefier rear suspension
can someone help???
how to get your shock install back on your bike including the remote cable on the shock?
is there a video?
can you do a video on how to set sag for a coil shock and spring fork ??
Best explanation I’ve seen so far 👍
I tought we have to equalize the air in the shock after adding or removing air?
Can you measure sag the same way if you use the swingarm and seat
I take air out of my fork to make it softer but I loose a lot of travel however when I add air to get travel the fork is too firm ,am I doing something wrong or am I just too light
My o-ring is slipping off the rear shaft completely. The shop insists the sag is correct, should I apply more pressure to rear shock?
that's a nice shock pump, looks just like my Topeak DXG 👍
Love this channel
Thanks!
Global Mountain Bike Network this really helped me! Keep it up!+ I subscribed!
Me too this channel made it possible for me to make up for the years of not mountain biking and get my skills up to par!
+Global Mountain Bike Network how about coil? please upload a video about coil shock setup! thanks!
Hi i have an question is it normal for a rear shock for almost botoming out on smal jumps
what position should the shock be in when setting sag? Should it be fully open, or in the setting I typically ride?
That’s what I’m wondering, do you know?
didn't we have this video last month?
Nice helpful presentation... cute dude as well!
super helpful and easy to understand- Thanks you!
Should I take off the rubber o-ring after I finish setting up sag because it’s getting kind of dirty after some use.
no i wouldn't recommend taking it off but maybe clean it a bit when u wash the bike
Alright thanks it also keeps falling off the bottom when I bottom out the shock but I will be sure to clean it
I'm still a bit confused, should rebound be fast or slow when setting sag?
Hi Chad, It doesn't really matter as long as you can measure the sag with an O ring. 👍
If your bike is low end and the fork doesent have the options for pumping more or less air into it is that a bad thing? The only thing you can adjust on the fork is the preload...
Helped so much! I just got my first full sus bike
CONGRATS!!! what kind?
MTBdropIN Giant Reign
Nice! You get the pike suspension?
this bike is a dream, thumps up.
Dude the army print is freaken awesome!
Could you guys make a video about when to shift gears
How often does this have to be checked, or is it once and done? Thanks
On shapeshifter tech should you set your sag in XC or DH mode? Or does it not really matter?
I would say that the DH setting would be best because it is using all 160mm of the travel instead of around 130mm. Also the shape shifter on the Canyon Strive makes the shock during XC mode stiffer. To set sag the shock should be fully extended until you set the sag. I am not certain about this but thats what I would do.
DH :)
Cheers guy, will set it once I'm recovered from my broken leg 😅
Bryce Dunn No problem man, hope it heals soon!
Great easy video thanks heaps bro
Can we just pump the air pressure according to rider's weight approximately? Then there's no need to use the o-ring anymore
(I don't have a bike yet so I don't really know what it looks like)
I'm wondering that too, have you found the answer?
I kid you not when ever Neil shows his Scott Genius LT I have to watch the video again because I get distracted by his bike. WANT ONE SO BAD~
Yeah his bike is the cats meow. I believe that bike is at least 8000 with the kit he has on it.
Yeah, it retails for $8,300 for the "Tuned" model. I was going to buy it but it was completely sold out so I had to get the one below this one the 710. Right now I'm slowly building it up to be almost like the one Neil has.
How much psi for the front ? What is your setup
What's your opinion on the AutoSag feature on some rear shocks? My Stumpy has it.
Did you change the TwinLoc system? I'd prefer to have my system underneath as well but it doesn't quite work, or am I doing it wrong? lol
How do you get your bottle out of there?
Nice Video btw
very helpful thank you
What psi should I start at? (New bike)
How often do you need to blow up the rear suspension?
This was so useful and well timed, my 2017 giant reign 2 arrived yesterday!
How's the bike going?
SJKP hahah great thanks, in need of a full service
@askgmbn any tips on setting up suspension on an xc marathon bike? i have a specialized camber with 110mm travel and i seem to be using half the travel with brake dive, and on my bike thats a lot! cheers

Can you guys esplain the "klicks" things on the suspensions? :D
Len Heinatzky you mean compression or rebound
Nicolas Montpetit Yes :D
Great video
Does it have to be exact 20% mine is a bit under
I love that bike
good stuff, thanks
No problem Peter, thanks for the great comment! 🤘
When you fill air into the fork, should the rebound knob be at the slowest or fastest?
This was 4 years ago, did you find your answer?
What is the weight capacity?
When measuring to mm so you go from right at end/tip of black shock seal? I can't quite see in your video. But I usually do
Why do you need a harder front than rear?
what do u think about the maxxis ardent tyre for all around riding xc and enduro?
Great tire, but if in dusty conditions during summer the ikon is the way to go for XC
how come you didnt show the part when you remove the nozzle and puff goes your air..
can i do this with regular pump i dont have shock pump
What bottle cage do you guys use?
Topeak :)
Hey guys, what's the special valve on the pump? Where can I get one? Thanks.
It's a Topeak shock pump :)
"Try not bouncing" < as it bounces as he dismounts > lol
What he meant by bouncing is when you get off, don't push into the bike to assist yourself off, as this will compress the shock further.
Which is what he did (after not pushing the o-ring up all the way just before dismounting)
No no, he meant bouncing, as in adding downward momentum into the bike to increase sag with momentum + gravity. You just want to isolate gravity of your own weight, without any additional downward forces. He jumps off the back end of the bike allowing the spring to recoil back into decompressed position. i have trouble with the rebound on my forks. So if I just set up the correct ammount of sag can I play around with the rebound to have it right for me?
Correct!
+Global Mountain Bike Network thanks
For a 100mm fork would you still have 20% sag because I think it is too far through the travel
Do we set the sag for the rear shock in the open, mid or closed position?
always in open
#askgmbn When I'm pumping up my rear shock, I get it to the pressure I want, but when I disconnect the hose, the shock loses about 20psi from a short little "psst" as the air leaks out of the connection. Is there a trick to not losing the pressure or should I just pump it up about 20psi too high and expect it to lose the pressure when I disconnect?
Happens to me too!
Finally got a full suspension and same happened to me. I just learned to pump it about 20psi higher as you mentioned.
a little late but to my knoledge the "psst" that you are hearing while discconecting the pump is the air pressure that is held on the hose of the pump, you are not losing air pressure on your shock or fork, so you dont have to pump your shock 20 psi higher!
I upgraded a cheap $200 ebay bike and now due to bad rear pivoting design i only get 40mm rear travel.
what brand of shock pump did Niel use in the video?
Topeak!
Thank you
If I'm a lighter rider and I don't use all of my travel, how much sag should I measure?
does this 2.8 tire consider as a ''+''bike?
Yes, plus bike is typically 2.8 to 3.0
So iv'e got a 140 mm travel trail bike with a 2 X 10 drivetrain.. Should i upgrade to a dropper post or a 1 X drivetrain first?
definitely a dropper post. I've been riding trails with one for 5 months now, I will never go back to riding without one. I heard mixed reviews from people who've swapped their 2/10 for 1/11. some loved it, some went straight back. hope that helps.

***** I think you just answered your own question mate.
If i remove air from my fork who is a RockShox Reba RL i loose travel
Great thanks mate
I’ve got a rockshox gold 35 fork on a hardtail.
Trying to set up, rockshox recommends about 135psi but when I do that it is rock hard (like
Locked our).
If I set it low enough to get 20% sag it feels way too soft (50 or 60 psi).
Anyone have any ideas?
Do i buy a new hard tail or a used full suspension? I am only 14 so money is quite a big factor.
lewiswebstermtb I just bought a used full suspension enduro bike for £450 I'm 13 so yeah second hand bikes are cheaper and usually only have cosmetic wear so you would get a great bike for cheap
Columbakin what was the bike?
sacha Brito Saracen kili flyer 12x carbon rear their is a 15x on eBay for less than £450 so go check it out
What do you do for coil shocks?
Change the spring and or adjusting the preload (Don't preload too much this will ruin small bump sensitivity)
Max Ulmen Thank you
THANK YOU!
Hey GMBN. Whats your opinion on the cube analog 29
Lewis Wheatley go for the cube attention sl
Lewis Wheatley not to bad for a starter bike...my brother has one..however the fork is terrible..i would recommend spending a little more and try get a bike with an air fork.
Martin Cantwell Ok honestly, i rarely ever do trail riding anyway mainly on the street. would you still see the fork as a problem
Lewis Wheatley oh.in that case no its perfect.👌.nice bike to ride.
how about a video on studded winter tyres? you seem to have slightly run out of idea's :P
Yeah, I wonder why they did the same video as two years ago. Maybe update content i suppose.
Then you shouldn't bottom out nearly as much.
ok thanks :) how much do they cost ?
Nico Haßlauer I don't think they cost much at all. Just check chain reaction cycles or online. I saw some for less than 15 usd for a pike
I have to run about 200-220 psi in my rear enduro shock, can this be effected by the design i'm only 74 kg
Benflaton I run 235psi on an enduro, 115kg, found the frame design isn't very progressive on these bikes particularly for specialized .
Can you guys do videos on different bikes that you use. I notice Neil has like 2 160mm travel bikes and it would be cool to learn about what and why for them
Is it 30% of the travel or 30% of the stroke
