- How to make a DIY sleeping pad inflator with just a few common household items. Weighing a mere 0.2 ounces, this handy little pump will not only save you time and effort while out on the trail, but increase the lifespan of your inflatable sleeping pad by reducing moisture build-up within the pad. All-in-all, a great little piece of ultra lightweight backpacking gear. *Works on virtually all major sleeping pad brands, such as: Thermarest, NeoAir, Big Agnes, Nemo, etc.

For skeptics out there about the durability of a trash bag for this application: I've been using a similar home-made trash bag inflator for @ 10 years now in all kinds of terrain/conditions with no problems or failure. This design shown in the video looks like a great approach. Thanks for the effort and for sharing!
Great tip. I used the cap and threaded bottle top end, without the rubber washer, on a Klymit valve. I simply drilled a 3/4" hole, like you did, and used a rat tail rasp to open the hole up slightly and just slip fit it. Worked great. Thanks

You're a genius. I bought a new Thermarest Neo Air (got the wider one - needs more air). So comfy. I'm using my little but heavy battery powered pump, made for an air bed. Your idea is going with me as soon as I can make that head piece. Love it!

Dude, this is fricken brilliant! The inflation bags you can buy commercially are SO damned expensive AND heavy. This is an amazing diy hack. Thanks so much for sharing!
PS - In the video you say to "drill a 5/8" hole." However, you are using a 3/4" bit (clearly marked!), which makes the hole in the cap 1/8" larger in diameter than the inside diameter of the rubber washer. This is perfect as it allows the pad valve to be inserted easily and for the rubber washer to provide the seal. I suspect that the valve on the pad wouldn't even actually fit through the hard plastic lid if it was only drilled with a 5/8" bit!
This is downright clever. I never had trouble inflating mats but one day it occurred to me, I was putting bacteria laden, moist air in the mat. So I bought a hand pump that did not need batteries.
For any who might not wish to do this by DIY, maybe they could just buy the male and female hose repair pieces at a hardware store. I haven't tried it, but it should work.

Thanks for the video! Didn't have a rubber washer at home, instead I had some bicycle tubing that I made a rubber washer from. Works a treat!
The bags themselves can however be problematic as they are not made to be airtight. Easy to get small holes that ultimately limit the maximum pressure.

Thanks angler! I had been fiddling unsuccessfully with a rubber band when I decided to work on this. I actually took the washer from a garden hose, it fits perfectly both around the valve and inside a bottle cap. Using this I was able to inflate my mattress with quite some pressure. It is easier and it keeps the moist outside. I am only looking for bigger strong clear bag, as I prefer a clear one for this.

Works beautifully and so much easier than the rubber band method I was using! Yet another use for a Smartwater bottle. The top worked perfect.

Really nice! I am a great fan of DIY stuff for decades, and I really love this one! Simple, fast, easy to do and cost nothing! I try to find something in 2022 to inflate thermarest with old valves and can’t find nothing except my lungs! Probably cause I live in (french) Canada so stuff came harder to find here… Anyway thanks to take the time to share this with us!

Fantastically simple and Works perfectly. best using a quality rubbish bag.. Filled the mat in 2 and a bit goes. So much faster than the supplied sack.

Great tip! The old Canadian Army air mattress came with a piece of thinner rubber material at the end that functioned the same way as your tip. Since half of our training was in winter - This came in handy all year long. The only downpart was the loud farting sound they made while inflating!
They have been replaced with self inflating mattress and while not as comfortable as the air ones, are a lot warmer in the winter!

Thanks Man ! I've been inflating my different pads with a garbage bag and a rubber band for the past 5 years. It all started when I forgot my pump and since then, I'm carrying the smallest pump ever : a garbage bag. Your tip will make that even better (the rubber band technique can be a pain sometimes). Keep those tips it coming !!

I'm like really like in finding this, but... as everyone else has said, you're a genius. I actually had all the parts to make one in the house. Here's what I'm going to do... I regularly line my backpack with a trash compactor bag, so I'm going to use that as the pump bag and take another cap (without a hole in it) to make the bag waterproof.

Super late to the topic: Consider cutting out a circle of rubber/plastic (e.g. bike inner tube), place it inside the cap with the hole and screw it on - should be water tight now. Easy to replace. In a pinch you could probably even cut out a bit from the trash compactor to get the hole closed again.

That would be a good addition to a compactor bag that is lining my pack.
Thank you John, great Idea. I'm going to do just exactly that. I might even apply it to a drysack and double purpose. Some duct tape might smooth the application of the cap.
My thoughts, too. I would think it would work on a 20L bag, and then also keep a spare un-modified cap and install it when you want it to be water tight.
