Fun Fact: This movie saved Marvel Comics from bankruptcy. In the 80's Marvel had several attempts at failed movies Howard The Duck, Captain America and a canceled Fantastic Four movie. Not only did this movie keep Marvel Comics afloat in the 90's it showed a market for Superhero movies. Follow New Line Cinema, Fox bought X-Men and Sony purchased rights for Spider-Man.
Marvel's bankruptcy had nothing to do with their comics line or any films,it was the head honcho being extra greedy and making bad decisions with huge amounts of money.If you're interested to knowing the full scope of things there's many documentaries on this topic on youtube.

Blade cutting the roots off the plant is symbolic of him cutting off the people who raised him/taught him. The memory of him mom and Whistler. It’s like a warrior act. He’s going into battle knowing it’s his biggest and deepest one yet. Blade definitely is a top 10 superhero film in my book

Blade started this trend, although most think it’s The Matrix. And I must add, Wesley (now called Dr. Snipes, got his doctorate now) is trained in at least 3 kinds of Martial Arts. So way more than Kung Fu. He’s one of those celebrities you don’t want to cross. He’s not just a movie bad ass, he’s a real one.

Correct but as much as I loved Aaliyah, she was not a superhero. Her dressing this way did not inspire other young women, like myself at the time, to start wearing a coat and sunglasses, nor take martial arts. Blade did. But if you feel it was Aaliyah’s influence, go with that ;)
Wesley Snipes really can fight like that. He's a black belt in a few martial arts.

Blade is technically a Dhampir half-human half-vampire. Just as Whistler explained. Snipes preformed the fight choreography for this movie. Snipes is a real-life martial artist for 40+ years and holds black belts in Hapkido and Shotokan karate. As well as experience in Kung Fu, kick boxing, capoeira and sword fighting techniques.

"Blade" came out before "X-Men" and the Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man." By the time "Blade 2" came out, CGI was already further along and the budget got bumped up by 20%.
"Blade" also came out before "The Matrix," and you can see some stylistic similarities: black sunglasses, dressed all black, trench coats, machine guns, martial arts, and one blonde chick all in white.
Only seen Blade once, but I’ll never forget that *Doc Karen saves this movie 3 times.* 2 times she saves Blade, 1 more when she makes ‘the cure’. A lot of movies still don’t know how to do that today even with their supporting females. Cutting edge film (pun intended).
Exactly. And I don't know if this is irony or not, but she's a strong female character named "Karen." Both of those things kinda have a negative connotation to them nowadays.
they don't even know how to do it with female leads anymore; Ellen Ripley wasn't a girl boss, she was a straight up badass human being... compare to Cptn Marvel or some other modern feminazi fanatsy character, the difference is stark. Karen was a badass supporting character, without being a girl boss OR a helpless, hapless, lucky twit. They found that sweet spot.

Blade was the best thing to come out at that time and made Wesley Snipes a household name. Blade was the first cosplay I ever did and it was pretty cool to put that costume on at a convention. This movie and part two are some of my favorite movies.
You mentioned the " Uncle Tom " part was layered. Trust me, the whole movie layered in more ways than one.
BLADE is most definitely a CLASSIC, and Wesley Snipes brought so much depth, and interpretation to the character. Yes, Snipes will always be BLADE. Looking forward to Mahershala Ali playing in the new upcoming version of BLADE. I believe Hollywood was setting up the audiences for Mahershala Ali playing Blade, when he played a villain named Vector in the movie, Alita: Battle Angel, in which his whole attitude and style of dress was reminiscent of Wesley Snipes Blade. Please, check out his performance and character in that movie. Peace!

Another fun fact. The little girl he fights is actually one of Wesley Snipes students. Also, He originally asked for Black Panther…they said no, gave him Blade, thinking it was a throw away.

Spawn came after Blade. But earliest Black TV superhero I recall is called Mantis. He was a disabled Dr that made a suit that not only allowed him to walk, but also fight crime.
I remember Mantis it was a pretty good show, with actor Carl Lumbly as Mantis. It was created by Sam Raimi and Sam Hamm. M.A.N.T.I.S. acronym for Mechanically Augmented Neurotransmitter Interactive System. That's a mouthful. 😆😂😃

Blade is definitely close to 10 so your rating is legit 👌🏾. Part 2 is a 10 imo. I wish you would’ve watched that one to close it out but watch it if you’ve never seen it. The villain is way better and really the best one out of Wesley’s three films. The cgi is better too , although it’s some parts that are a lil cheesy 🤷🏾♂️😂. Grab a couple blankets for that one cause it’s 10x more scary. Also, the original blade wasn’t a hybrid or a martial arts master. He became that around 90s, so that mixed with Wesley’s training, changed the character forever. That’s why they’re bs’n with the reboot, mahershala ain’t playin 😂.

No you're correct. That cop the villain bit was indeed killed. He was killed because Frost, as a typical villain, doesn't like his henchmen to fail. Yes you can turn into a vampire if you are bitten provided you survive the initial attack. Frost practically ripped the cop's throat out.

THANK you for spotting the people in body bags at the beginning. You got that right. :) Yes, Blade did have a flash back of his mother from the moments after he was born which caused him to help Karen. Whistler is played by Kris Kristopherson. They left Whistler alive intentionally to tell him about the girl so they could get him to come for her and they could get his blood. Blade cut the flower because without Whistler there was no longer peace for him. It was signifying the end of his ties to everything. You can see Blade's mother as she gets out of the bed but she is a little bit fuzzy and it was really quick. His mother turned his back on him because he she became a vampire and enjoyed it. My only disappointment is that you didn't mention anything about "motherfkers always trying to ice skate uphill." lol Two more movies to go. You will love Blade II. Trust me. :)

I want to add imagine now that AI can take over CGI for movies....Kinda scary but idk. Considering the movie of it's time it was a good movie. I can tell by the use of technology since then we very much have grown lol. Some part of the movie felt pretty wacky to me, there was some giggles in some of the fighting scenes for me lol. He takes the watches for money. Also....we weren't idiots in 1998 lol some of the special effects looked iffy even back then. Remember this was 5-7 years after Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park and a year after The Lost World and Titanic. We very much were used to modern effects in 1998. Blade was a low budget movie. But it's so cool that some kinda fakey looking effects didn't hurt it. Plus...Blade II makes up for it with much better visuals..

Actually the visual FX in Blade were not state of the art for 1998 buy keep in mind that Blade was made with a moderate or mid-size budget $45 million. Terminator 2 released in 1991 had a budget of +100 million which would be considered like 250 to 300 million today. But the CGI in T2 has held up very well even after 33 years compared to Blade being released 26 years ago. Some of the visual fx in Blade 2 are somewhat better by comparison including the practical effects.

Black, white this movie has a great cast everyone gets their credit. Wesley Snipes did a perfect job of BLADE. I don't know about the new actor Casted to play BLADE because he has some big shoes to fill.

The MCU didn't exist until Ironman, but this is definitely the first successful Marvel movie. It paved the way for the X-Men and Spiderman movies that Fox put out before Marvel decided to make their own movies.
Also, I'm pretty sure this came out right around the time Warner Bros was ruining the Batman franchise with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, so it could be argued that this movie saved comic superhero movies in general.
Also, The Matrix trilogy was a really huge leap forward in CGI. It came out right after this so Blade's CGI looked dated pretty fast, which is unfortunate. I wish someone would go back and redo the CGI, like a remaster. Especially since the new Blade movie probably isn't gonna come out until Mahershala Ali really looks like his character in True Detective

Blade is a dope movie and your reaction was great!!!🤣Love this series! I know you don't like the blood and gore so much but I HIGHLY recommend watching Blade 2 as well. Thats a dope movie too and its my personal favorite of the trilogy. The 3rd movie though, you don't have to watch if you don't want to.
